This paper focuses on the effect of ball-burnishing parameters (burnishing speed, burnishing force, burnishing feed and number of passes) on the surface roughness and hardness of aluminum alloy 6013. The Taguchi method was utilized to specify the most influential parameters for surface roughness and surface hardness. In this study, the optimum ball-burnishing parameters for surface roughness were obtained for a single number of passes, a burnishing force of 150 N, a burnishing speed of 200 rpm and a feed rate of 0.1 mm × min−1. By contrast, the optimum ball-burnishing parameters for surface hardness were also obtained for a single number of passes, a burnishing force of 150 N, a burnishing speed of 400 rpm and a feed rate of 0.25 mm × min−1.","PeriodicalId":351153,"journal":{"name":"Materials Testing-Materials and Components Technology and Application","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125788607","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Optimizing the tool profile of friction stir spot welded joints is thus essential due to the direct controlling influence of tool morphology on material flow, bonding and weld quality. Therefore, this study examines the optimization of friction stir spot welded 1 mm thick 3003-H14 wrought aluminum alloy, by using a cylindrically threaded pin tool morphology and the Taguchi optimization methodology. Tool rotational speed, plunge depth and dwell time are utilized as welding parameters, while maximum shear failure load is employed as the response in this study. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) is employed to systematically investigate the main effect and interaction effect of welding parameters on weld performance. A maximum shear failure load of 2530 N was attained at a parameter combination of 1.50...","PeriodicalId":351153,"journal":{"name":"Materials Testing-Materials and Components Technology and Application","volume":"198 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128397043","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

During the welding process, three different rotations, 700, 1000 and 1300, were employed while the other parameters such as friction pressure, friction time, upsetting-pressure and upsetting-duration were unchanged. After the completion of welding process, the welded joints were subjected to radiographic tests by X-raydiffraction. The result of the radiographic tests indicates that by increasing rotation speed the amount of flash and joining properties/performance increases in all samples. The best properties of the AISI 420 martensitic stainless steel joints were observed in samples welded at a rotation speed of 1300 (rpm). It has been determined that in harmony with the definition of welding defects and respective radiographic images, lack of fusion is the most common welding defect.","PeriodicalId":351153,"journal":{"name":"Materials Testing-Materials and Components Technology and Application","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129180832","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This showed that the maximum error of elastic modulus values using the revised model was less than 5 % while the average error was more than 30 % using the original model. In addition, the correlation between the number of voids and the reduction in elastic modulus values was analyzed to verify the reasonability of judging material damage through elastic modulus reduction. A comparison of the plasticity index in indentation tests (critical indentation depth) with the plasticity index in uniaxial tensile tests (area reduction rate), a method, based on continuous damage mechanics, to determine the area reduction rate from spherical indentation tests, was also provided.","PeriodicalId":351153,"journal":{"name":"Materials Testing-Materials and Components Technology and Application","volume":"152 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116201787","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The process takes place in a vacuum chamber at high temperatures and an analysis of the joint formed is only possible in a subsequent step. In this investigation, a novel setup has been introduced to allow for an in situ measurement of the brazing process via its electrical resistance. For this, a 4wiretechnique has been applied to the specimen to precisely measure the low resistance of the joint within a range of µΩ. By choosing two different holding times at a process temperature of 1150 °C and by analyzing the ensuing joint structures, it was possible to correlate the signal measured with the on-going diffusion and bonding process. Finally, the authors have revealed that the applied current of the measurement system had a distinct effect on the joint structure formed, which could be used additionally to improve the quality of the joint.","PeriodicalId":351153,"journal":{"name":"Materials Testing-Materials and Components Technology and Application","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131264063","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

CT-specimens are cut out of cast plates and tested under monotonic and quasi-static conditions. Good ductility, high work hardening and restricted specimen dimensions complicate the fracture mechanical characterization of the material and regular fracture toughness values cannot be determined. Crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) and crack extension are measured optically. Force-displacement data and crack growth resistance curves have been gleaned from the experiments. A cohesive zone model has been utilized to simulate the fracture event (crack initiation and propagation). The results of these simulations have been compared with experimental data. The aim is to determine the cohesive parameters as these can be related to fracture toughness. The transferability of these parameters to specimens of greater thickness remains an open question.","PeriodicalId":351153,"journal":{"name":"Materials Testing-Materials and Components Technology and Application","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126128398","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We offer a finite element analysis (FEA) for calculating failure loads when simulating crack growth between three-dimensional composite parts joint with adhesive as well as an analysis of the effect of crack length on adhesive joint performance. Likewise, we have examined the effects of orientation angles on crack length and failure load. For this analysis, composite parts are made of carbon/epoxy (AS4/3501-6) with different fiber orientation angles. DP 410 was the adhesive used. The models for the numerical analyses were generated by using an ANSYS software package. The finite element analyses were carried out in order to predict failure loads. Stress at x, y, z directions, shear stress and von-Mises stress on adhesive were obtained at the time of failure for predetermined parameters. Lastly, we examined the effects of orientation angles, crack length, and...","PeriodicalId":351153,"journal":{"name":"Materials Testing-Materials and Components Technology and Application","volume":"96 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133533754","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Ti6Al4V, which is the most commonly used implant material, was choosen for this study. In the numerical study, solid models of implants and femurs were created using the SolidWorks 2010 package program, then stress analyses were carried out at five different inclination angles, 120°, 125°, 130°, 135° and 140°, with and without bone cement (polymethylmethacrylate), using the ANSYS Workbench 12.0 package program. The anteversion angle was assumed to be 12.5° for all models. As a result of the increase in the inclination angle and the addition of bone cement, it was determined that the stress values of the femurs and implants were reduced. Within the limitations of this study it has been shown that parameters like bone cemen...","PeriodicalId":351153,"journal":{"name":"Materials Testing-Materials and Components Technology and Application","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131950669","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
