Trends in fertility patterns and maternal and infant characteristics are described and interpreted. Methods-Descriptive tabulations of data reported on the birth certificates of the 3.75 million births that occurred in 2019 are presented. Data are presented for maternal age, livebirth order, race and Hispanic origin, marital status, tobacco use, prenatal care, source of payment for the delivery, method of delivery, gestational age, birthweight, and plurality. Selected data by mother's state of residence and birth rates by age are also shown. Trend data for 2010 through 2019 are presented for selected items. Trend data by race and Hispanic origin are shown for 2016-2019. Results-A total of 3,747,540 births were registered in the United States in 2019, down 1% from 2018. The general fertility rate declined from 2018 to 58.3 births per 1,000 women aged 15-44 in 2019. The birth rate for females aged 15-19 fell 4% between 2018 and 2019. Birth rates declined for women aged 20-34 and increased for women aged 35-44 for 2018-2019. The total fertility rate declined to 1,706.0 births per 1,000 women in 2019. Birth rates declined for both married and unmarried women from 2018 to 2019. The percentage of women who began prenatal care in the first trimester of pregnancy rose to 77.6% in 2019; the percentage of all women who smoked during pregnancy declined to 6.0%. The cesarean delivery rate decreased to 31.7% in 2019 (Figure 1). Medicaid was the source of payment for 42.1% of all births in 2019. The preterm birth rate rose for the fifth straight year to 10.23% in 2019; the rate of low birthweight was essentially unchanged from 2018 at 8.31%. The methodology used to estimate the state-specific life tables is the same as that used to estimate the 2018 national life tables, with some modifications. Results-Among the 50 states and the District of Columbia, Hawaii had the highest life expectancy at birth, 81.0 years in 2018, and West Virginia had the lowest, 74.4 years. Life expectancy at age 65 ranged from 17.5 years in Kentucky to 21.1 years in Hawaii. Life expectancy at birth was higher for females in all states and the District of Columbia. The race categories are consistent with 1997 Office of Management and Budget (OMB) standards, which are different from previous reports (1977 OMB standards). Methods-Information reported on death certificates is presented in descriptive tabulations. The original records are filed in state registration offices. Statistical information is compiled in a national database through the Vital Statistics Cooperative Program of the National Center for Health Statistics. Causes of death are processed according to the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision. As of 2018, all states and the District of Columbia were using the 2003 revised certificate of death, which includes the 1997 OMB revised standards for race. The 2018 data based on the revised standards are not completely comparable to previous years. Selected estimates are presented in this report for both the revised and previous race standards to provide some reference for interpretation of trends. Results-In 2018, a total of 2,839,205 deaths were reported in the United States. The age-adjusted death rate was 723.6 deaths per 100,000 U.S. standard population, a decrease of 1.1% from the 2017 rate. Life expectancy at birth was 78.7 years, an increase of 0.1 year from 2017. Age-specific death rates decreased in 2018 from 2017 for age groups 15-24, 25-34, 45-54, 65-74, 75-84, and 85 and over. The 15 leading causes of death in 2018 remained the same as in 2017. The infant mortality rate decreased 2.2% to a historically low figure of 5.66 infant deaths per 1,000 live births in 2018. This list is intended to facilitate the measurement of the quality of cause-of-death reporting by medical certifiers in terms of completeness, as assessed by a UCOD that is sufficiently specific. Methods-A list of codes from the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th Revision was developed to classify unsuitable UCODs defined according to three main subtypes: unknown and ill-defined causes, immediate and intermediate causes, and nonspecific UCODs. Unsuitable UCODs and the three subtypes were examined using 2018 death certificate data for both U.S. residents and nonresidents in the 50 states and the District of Columbia. Differences in the frequency of unsuitable UCODs and the subtypes were tested by age group, place of death, and state of occurrence. Trends in unsuitable UCODs and the three subtypes were also investigated by analyzing death certificate data from 2010 to 2018. Results-In 2018, 34.7% of all death records had an unsuitable UCOD: 2.2% had an unknown or ill-defined cause as the UCOD, 12.7% had an immediate or intermediate cause as the UCOD, and 19.8% had a nonspecific UCOD. Unsuitable UCODs and the subtypes varied by age group, place of death, state, and year. No trend in unsuitable UCODs from 2010 to 2013 was seen, but from 2013 to 2018, a decrease of 0.6% per year was observed, which is likely due to a similar decrease in nonspecific UCODs during the same time period. Methods-Data used to prepare the 2018 life tables are 2018 final mortality statistics; July 1, 2018 population estimates based on the 2010 decennial census; and 2018 Medicare data for persons aged 66-99. The methodology used to estimate the life tables for the Hispanic population remains unchanged from that developed for the publication of life tables by Hispanic origin for data year 2006. The methodology used to estimate the 2018 life tables for all other groups was first implemented with data year 2008. In 2018, all 50 states and the District of Columbia reported deaths by race based on the 1997 Office of Management and Budget revised standards for the classification of federal data on race and ethnicity. As a result, race-specific life tables for 2018 presented in this report are based on the new standard and show estimates for single-race groups. These estimates are not completely comparable with those of previous years, which are based on bridged-race groups. To show trends and document the impact of changing to the 1997 standards, life expectancy estimates for 2006-2018 are reported for bridged-race categories that were in use starting with data year 2000. Results-In 2018, the overall expectation of life at birth was 78.7 years, increasing from 78.6 in 2017. Between 2017 and 2018, life expectancy at birth increased by 0.1 year for males (76.1 to 76.2) and females (81.1 to 81.2). Suicide rates are compared among states for 2016-2018. Methods-Data are from death certificates from all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Suicide rates among persons aged 10-24 per 100,000 population are computed for each year from 2000 through 2018 for the states and years where sufficient cases existed to produce reliable rates. Percent change between 3-year averages of suicide rates for 2007-2009 and 2016-2018 are computed for each area except the District of Columbia. Suicide rates for 2016-2018 are compared among states. Results-Nationally, the suicide rate among persons aged 10-24 was statistically stable from 2000 to 2007 and then increased 57.4%, from 6.8 per 100,000 in 2007 to 10.7 in 2018. Between 2007-2009 and 2016-2018, suicide rates increased significantly in 42 states, increased nonsignificantly in 8 states, and were not possible to assess in the District of Columbia due to small numbers. Significant increases ranged from 21.7% in Maryland to a more than doubling of the rate in New Hampshire.
