Therefore, I am contributing to his Festschrift a study about one of the most significant texts about Ivan IV’s Oprichnina, the Sinodik opal’nykh. This work, unique even among other Old Russian sinodiki, has been analyzed with the help of digital tools available on the internet (www.voyant-tools.org). As it turns out, the available manuscripts of the sinodik are so diverse that they cannot have originated from a single prototype; this new insight challenges most 20th-century scholarly reconstructions. The compilation and existence of the manuscripts found since the 17th century need to be re-evaluated. The existing so-called reconstructions corroborate nothing of the known history of the Oprichnina.","PeriodicalId":35067,"journal":{"name":"Canadian-American Slavic Studies","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41693842","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Рассматриваются вклады Малюты Скуратова и по его душе, вклады других представителей семьи Бельских. Предпринято исследование и расшифровка родового синодика-помянника Малюты Скуратова. Материал позволяет сделать вывод о том, что Бельские были тесно связаны с Иосифо-Волоколамским монастырем на протяжении большей части XVI в. Возвышение Малюты Скуратова в опричнину привело к тому, что он жертвовал в обитель огромные суммы и положил начало организации родовой коммеморации в этом монастыре на высшем уровне. Преемник Малюты в положении царского фаворита, его племянник Богдан Бельский, также вложил крупные средства в Иосифо-Волоколамский монастырь. Тесные связи М. Скуратова с монастырем, возможно, привели к тому, что и других вкладчики Иосифо-Волоколамского монастыря оказались на службе в опричнине, а видные опричники и «дворовые» стали давать вклады в обитель святого Иосифа.","PeriodicalId":35067,"journal":{"name":"Canadian-American Slavic Studies","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48575771","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
{"title":"The Early Patronage of the Cult of SS. Boris and Gleb","authors":"S. Bogatyrev","doi":"10.30965/22102396-05701011","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.30965/22102396-05701011","url":null,"abstract":"\u0000 This paper examines the patronage of the cult of SS. Boris and Gleb through the reign of Volodimir Monomakh (r. 1113–1125) by using textual criticism, memory studies, and works on medieval Christian materiality. It revisits the chronology of the main texts on SS. Boris and Gleb (the Primary Chronicle, two hagiographical tales and Nestor’s Lesson concerning the life and murder of the saints); the Primary Chronicle contaminated the hagiographical works that were written under Monomakh. This textual analysis offers a new perspective on the patronage of the cult. There were many factors that stimulated the emergence of the cult in the 1070s, including the threat of nomadic raids, inter-princely conflicts, and the aspirations of clerical communities to enhance their spiritual glory, augment their wealth, and address issues of historical memory. The promotion of the cult was therefore a collective effort of the princely and clerical elites. Among the clerical promoters of the cult were the metropolitan’s see, monastic communities, and the local clergy in Smolensk and Vyshhorod. The patronage of the cult crossed institutional boundaries as different groups of patrons promoted their interests during the commemoration of the royal martyrs. Royalty sponsored the building and decoration of churches dedicated to the saints. The metropolitan’s see initiated the gathering of information on miracles performed by the saints, organised their liturgical commemoration, and used the cult for mediating princely politics. The cult was also affected by a revision of the memory of Iaroslav Volodimirovich (r. 1019–1054) during the reign of his grandson Volodimir Monomakh. As part of this revision, monastic hagiographers created stories about Iaroslav establishing and patronising the cult of the saints. The myth of Iaroslav’s patronage validated Monomakh’s commemorative activities and appealed to other descendants of Iaroslav as potential sponsors of the cult.","PeriodicalId":35067,"journal":{"name":"Canadian-American Slavic Studies","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43677105","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study examines documentary evidence of relatives jointly engaged in primarily entrepreneurial transactions involving property. The concept of “family” in such evidence is only implicit. The data base contains 397 instances of “family partnerships” from members of 288 families. While every conceivable combination of family relationships occurs, what is most striking is the predominance of brothers as the sole family members involved in 162 cases, 40 % of the data base, or in combination with other relatives for an additional 114 instances totaling 276 records, or over 69 % of the data base. Moreover, one-generation family partnerships (just brothers 162, just cousins 8, brothers and cousins 17, just husband and wife 9) total 196 cases, nearly half the data base. The data confirm the important role of women in property relationships (women appear in 107 cases, over 25 % of the data base) and the relative unimportance of in-laws (who appear only 6 times). In practice, then, the Muscovite conception of family included previously unappreciated one-generation families, revealing that family relationships in Muscovy were even more fluid than has been previously supposed.","PeriodicalId":35067,"journal":{"name":"Canadian-American Slavic Studies","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43349067","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
