Most studies show that at puberty girls assess their health as worse than boys do, and the difference widens with age. Moreover, puberty is a crucial period for health, since it is the time when health risk behaviours are often initiated or become established.\u0000\u0000\u0000AIM\u0000To analyse the associations between high scores on self-rated health among 15-year-old girls, participants of the Healthy Me programme, and their selected health behaviours.\u0000\u0000\u0000MATERIAL AND METHODS\u0000The study covered a group of 1173 second-grade female students from 48 lower secondary schools located in rural and urban areas of 16 voivodeships all over Poland. The participants answered questions about chronic diseases or disability, self-rated health, diet, leisure activities, physical activity and health risk behaviours. In the statistical analysis, the association between self-rated health and individual indicators of health behaviour was examined using logistic regression.\u0000\u0000\u0000RESULTS\u0000Two thirds of the girls assessed their health as excellent or good. Only approximately 5% of the respondents made the "extreme negative" assessment. In the final multivariate analysis, five factors remained important predictors of high self-rated health scores: regular participation in physical education classes, vigorous physical activity, daily breakfast consumption, consumption of fruit at least once a day and sleep for at least 8 hours a day.\u0000\u0000\u0000CONCLUSIONS\u0000Regularparticipation in physical education classes, vigorousphysical activity, consumption of breakfast and fruit every day, as well as sleep for at least 8 hours a day are powerful predictors of high scores on self-rated health of 15-year-old adolescent girls.Public health activities aimed at adolescents should focus on the positive aspects of health and a lifestyle paying special attention on pro health behaviours.

Four bottle-feeding sessions were tested in each of the newborns: two in the side-lying and two in the semi-elevated position. The position for the first test was chosen randomly. For each of the positions twelve feeding sessions were examined and each preterm infant hod bottle-feeding sessions analyzed both in the semi-elevated and side-lying positions. The level of saturation and heart rate were measured as the parameters indicative of the newborn's physiological stability. The factors determining the qualitative aspect of feeding included the level of the newborn's alertness and the occurrence of choking episodes. The amount of food consumed and the duration of the feeding were also recorded.\u0000\u0000\u0000RESULTS\u0000The side-lying position was more effective with regard to the totol amount of sustenance consumed as compared to the semi-elevated feeding position and the study result was statistically significant (p=0.007). The difference in the number of chokes between the study groups was not statistically significant, although a trend towards a reduced number of choking episodes was observed among infants fed in the side-lying position (p=0.090). There were no significant differences in oxygen saturation, heart rate and level of activity between the study groups.\u0000\u0000\u0000CONCLUSIONS\u0000The effects of this pilot study demonstrate the efficacy of the side-lying feeding position regarding the final amount of milk intake. The side-lying position may also reduce the number of choking episodes during the feeding. The results suggest the need to extend the study in order to confirm the potential benefits of using the side-lying position.

DS patients often present with some congenital defects and chronic diseases, including early onset dementia, which affects 70% of DS patients over 55 years of age and has a clinical presentation similar to Alzheimer disease (AD). The symptoms of DS originate from excessive genetic material within the "critical region" of the 21st chromosome. The "critical region" encompasses genes potentially associated with increase risk of dementia, e.g. the APP gene (amyloid beta precursor protein) which leads to excessive amyloid beta production. Post-mortem studies of DS patients' brains revealed diffuse deposition of the insoluble form of amyloid beta (Aβ), which is a characteristic feature of AD. Moreover, those changes were commonly observed in subjects > 31 years old. The pathomechanisms of AD have not been fully elucidated and scientists are still searching for new risk factors that may contribute to the development of this common illness. Recent research proved that lipid disturbance, especially disorders in the metabolism of HDL (high density lipoprotein) may play a crucial role in this pathogenic process. There are many studies examining lipid and lipoprotein concentration in the DS population, but up to now there are insufficient studies comparing these parameters with memory impairment, which may be a useful model for better understanding of the dementia pathomechanism.

Records included probing pocket depth, clinical attachment level, keratinized gingiva, recession, vestibule depth, biotype, type of fraena, dental plaque and bleeding.\u0000\u0000\u0000RESULTS\u0000The mean scores of pocket depth were: 1.9 mm for central incisors, 1.6 mm for lateral incisors, 1.7 mm for canines, 2.0 mm for first premolars. There were only a few teeth with minimal attachment loss (1 mm). Gingival recessions were not recorded. High scores were recorded for the hygiene indicator, especially on the buccal, mesial and distal surfaces. Due to soft and hard tissue malformations, it was difficult to precisely assess the biotype and keratinized gingiva. However, keratinized gingiva was narrower near the teeth adjacent to the cleft. Similarly, the vestibule was shallower in this area. In 12 out of 15 children it was impossible to define the type of labial fraenum.\u0000\u0000\u0000CONCLUSIONS\u0000Evaluation of the periodontal status is important for successful comprehensive rehabilitation in cleft patients. Specific features of hard (alveolar process) and soft tissue (scars, unusual fraena) malformations caused by the cleft and previous surgical procedures have functional and morphological implications. Narrower gingiva and a shallower vestibule in the presence of dental plaque and bleeding are unfavourable conditions to maintain a healthy periodontium. It is essential to include periodontal assessment and preventive treatment to a comprehensive approach as early as possible.

The most common abnormalities besides obesity included: decreased High Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol (HDL-C) levels (n=13, 92.9%), increased triglycerides (TG) concentrations (n=10, 71.4%) and arterial hypertension (n=10, 71,4%). Among all the children, insulin resistance was diagnosed in 29 subjects (41.4%). The results of univariate logistic regression showed that the occurrence of lipid disorders, obesity, hypertension and diabetes in their parents, as well as the duration of pregnancy, birth weight, or breastfeeding were not associated with the risk of MS development in the subjects (p>0.05).
