Although the disease was considered casuistic in the pediatric population, its prevalence is rising among both children and infants. The occurrence of the disease is greater in developed countries, therefore urolithiasis should be considered a lifestyle disease. Its etiopathogenesis has not yet been well understood. Kidney stone formation is influenced by factors such as climate, eating habits, profession, fluid intake, genetic predisposition, urinary tract infections and malformations of the urinary tract. Calculi are usually composed of mixed mineral substances. Only about 30% are made up of one chemical substance, calcium oxalate being the most common. Urolithiasis can be asymptomatic and accidentally diagnosed. Abdominal pain is the most common clinical symptom, however disease presentation among infants is nonspecific. Hematuria is a common clinical finding. Ultrasonography is the most important diagnostic tool in the diagnosis of kidney stone disease. Metabolic evaluation is required in every case of urolithiasis in the pediatric population, as metabolic disorders can be found in the majority of cases in this age group. The spontaneous passage of calculi less than 6mm in diameter is likely. Invasive treatment should be carried out if stones exceed 6mm in diameter or fail to expulse spontaneously. Prophylactic treatment includes adequate fluid intake, healthy eating habits and physical activity to maintain a healthy weight. Urolithiasis is a recurrent disease, therefore long-term treatment, prophylaxis and a lasting change in dietary habits are essential.

Moreover, we would like to compare the results concerning the quality of life of the screened adolescents from Krakow with those of their European peers.\u0000\u0000\u0000MATERIAL AND METHODS\u0000The survey was carried out in 2013-2015 in 17 middle schools in Krakow based on anonymous auditorium questionnaires. The analysis included the responses of 1387 pupils - 686 girls and 701 boys. In order to assess the quality of life, the Polish version of the international KIDSCREEN-27 questionnaire was used. Five dimensions of the quality of life (Qol) were analyzed. The specific dimensions of Qol were analyzed using 0-100 point scales, as well as T-scores standardized for the European population.\u0000\u0000\u0000RESULTS\u0000The mean values for five dimensions of quality of life assessed by the KIDSCREEN-27 questionnaire ranged from 54 pts. to 65 pts. (maximum score 100 pts.). However, the results for the Polish adolescents were lower when compared to their European peers. The greatest differences in the level of Qol between Polish adolescents and their European peers involved the following dimensions: Psychological Wellbeing and School Environment. On average, girls scored their Qol lower than boys in three out of five dimensions (Physical Well-being, Psychological Well-being, Autonomy & Parents; p<0.001). Additionally, using the norm data for the Polish population (sex and age specific), more girls than boys were classified as having low Qol regarding the School Environment (23.5%vs 14.8%; p<0.001).\u0000\u0000\u0000CONCLUSIONS\u0000Polish adolescents scored their Qol lower than their European peers. The quality of life for girls was significantly lower than of boys, except for the relation with their friends and peers (Social Support & Peers).

The FCC (Family-Centered Care) initiative responded to emerging reports about the adverse consequences ensuing from the lack of parental access to hospitalized children. The FCC should be understood as care based on partner relations between families and health professionals, which is supposed to lead to health and well-being for both the children and their parents. Preventive examinations of functional disorders of the stomatognathic system are, therefore, of particular importance. A distinct group of patients exposed to dysfunctions in the area of the masticatory organ locomotor apparatus comprises those with genetic diseases characterised by disorders in collagen formation. One of such diseases is osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) and dentinogenesis imperfecta that usually goes together with the former. Aim The objective of this work was to evaluate the frequency with which particular disorders of the masticatory organ locomotor apparatus occur within the group of patients with osteogenesis imperfecta. Material and methods The study was performed on patients of the Orthopaedic Clinic of the Polish-American Paediatric Institute in Kraków. The mean age of the children was 7.9 years. In all the cases, a genetic diagnosis of OI has been confirmed. The research methods were based on an in-depth interview on family diseases, pregnancy, postnatal period, feeding, subjective assessment of dysfunctions in the stomatognathic system. An examination of the deformations in the stomatognathic system and the skeleton was conducted, as well as an examination of the trauma and tone of the jaw. The relationship between breastfeeding and swallowing and speech disorders was also evaluated. The impact of intubation on mandibular ranges was investigated. Results The results obtained were subjected to statistical analysis on the basis of which conclusions were drawn concerning disorders in the stomatognathic system which tend to occur in children with OI. The renunciation of breastfeeding significantly contributes to sucking and swallowing disorders, rumen disorders, as well as biomechanical disorders in the temporomandibular joint. A significant dependence between breastfeeding and swallowing problems was found, whereas there was no such dependence with respect to speech impediments. Conclusions The results of the research conducted led to the following conclusions: 1. Among pediatric patients with OI there are disorders in the stomatognathic system. The most common dysfunctions are: abdominal, swallowing and sucking disorders, abnormal muscle structure of the rumen and biomechanical disorders in the temporomandibular joints. Breastfeeding significantly contributes to swallowing disorders. 2. The therapeutic process involving children with OI requires the cooperation of specialists in orthopedics, pediatrics, physiotherapy, orthodontics and neurologopedics to carry out comprehensive diagnostics and treatment tailored to the individual needs of the patient. 3. In order to draw final conclusions, there is a need for more research by means of objective tools, such as EMG and a condensate recorder.

Associations between the present version of the CTFEQ-R21 and anthropometric measures as well as body composition were also examined.\u0000\u0000\u0000MATERIAL AND METHODS\u0000153 children and adolescents (68 boys and 95 girls; 10.8±3.5 years) took part in this study (BMI of 17.7±3. 1kg/m2). The participants were fitst interviewed to ascertain their understanding of the CTFEQ-R21 and were then asked to self-complete the questionnaire. Height and weight were measured and body composition assessed using bio impedance analyzers (Tanita MC 780).\u0000\u0000\u0000RESULTS\u0000The CTFEQ-R21 showed satisfactory interna/ consistency (Cronbach's a=0.78). Cronbach's alpha coefficients were 0.55 for CR (cognitive restriction), 0.75 for UE (Uncontrolled Eating), and 0.76 for EE (Emotional Eating) separately. UE and EE were found to be significantly correlated (r=0.54, p<0.05). The three factors explained 43% of the toto/ variance. Correlation between CR, UE and EE with body weight, BMI and FFM were significant but low to moderate, with coefficients ranging from 0.20 to 0.37. The higher the CR, UE and EE tertiles, the higher the weight, fat mass (kg) and fat-free mass values.\u0000\u0000\u0000CONCLUSIONS\u0000According to the psychometrie analysis of the questionnaire, the version of the CTFEQ-R21 proposed here is a satisfactory tool to assess eating behaviors in the Romanian child population that remains to be further developed.

DS patients often present with some congenital defects and chronic diseases, including early onset dementia, which affects 70% of DS patients over 55 years of age and has a clinical presentation similar to Alzheimer disease (AD). The symptoms of DS originate from excessive genetic material within the "critical region" of the 21st chromosome. The "critical region" encompasses genes potentially associated with increase risk of dementia, e.g. the APP gene (amyloid beta precursor protein) which leads to excessive amyloid beta production. Post-mortem studies of DS patients' brains revealed diffuse deposition of the insoluble form of amyloid beta (Aβ), which is a characteristic feature of AD. Moreover, those changes were commonly observed in subjects > 31 years old. The pathomechanisms of AD have not been fully elucidated and scientists are still searching for new risk factors that may contribute to the development of this common illness. Recent research proved that lipid disturbance, especially disorders in the metabolism of HDL (high density lipoprotein) may play a crucial role in this pathogenic process. There are many studies examining lipid and lipoprotein concentration in the DS population, but up to now there are insufficient studies comparing these parameters with memory impairment, which may be a useful model for better understanding of the dementia pathomechanism.
