Agha","doi":"10.1145/216636.216656","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1145/216636.216656","url":null,"abstract":"We argue that the specification of an object's functional behavior and the timing constraints imposed on it may be separated. Specifically, we describe RTsynchronizer, a high-level programming language construct for specifying real-time constraints between objects in a distributed concurrent system. During program execution, RTsynchronizers affect the scheduling of distributed objects to enforce real-time relations between events. Objects in our system are defined in terms of the actor model extended with timing assumptions. Separation of the functional behaviors of actors and the timing constraints on patterns of actor invocation provides at least three important advantages. First, it simplifies code development by separating design concerns. Second, multiple timing constraints can be independently specified and composed. And finally, a specification of timing constraints can be reused even if the representation of the functional behavior of actors has changed, and conversely.A number of examples are given to illustrate the use of RTsynchronizers. These examples illustrate how real-time constraints for periodic events, simultaneous events, exception handling, and producer-consumer may be specified.","PeriodicalId":349852,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the ACM SIGPLAN 1995 workshop on Languages, compilers, & tools for real-time systems","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129857873","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Without some commonly accepted benchmark suites, it is difficult if not impossible to compare the merits of different real-time systems. • A \"separation of concerns\" in real-time systems can partially be achieved via good language design and compiler development. The real-time field needs to look more thoroughly at related work in programming languages and compilers, particularly at prior research into parallel processing. • Researchers should be aware of developers' needs and the nature of commercial current applications and techniques. The field is changing at an incredible pace-and being stimulated by new applications such as digital video. • Some form of timing analysis is essential, but exhaustive efforts at proving correctness should be focused only on crucial components. Techniques which can predict a reasonable level of reliability will suffice in most cases. • Good tools are needed-monitors, debuggers, timing analyzers, smart compilers, automatic constraint detection. Good tools need good interfaces, and should provide feedback, with the aim/effect of modifying the programming process. Such tools for real-time systems are starting to be developed by commercial vendors. • Tools should automate as much of the design and implementation process as is reasonable, but can never replace the need for user experience and judgment.","PeriodicalId":349852,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the ACM SIGPLAN 1995 workshop on Languages, compilers, & tools for real-time systems","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124188832","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The software content of embedded systems is increasing, the applications are becoming more complex, the time-to-market pressure is increasing, and more often than not, the success of the entire project or product hinges on the software. Thus these software developers find that their job is becoming more difficult and more critical, but that they have less time to do it.","PeriodicalId":349852,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the ACM SIGPLAN 1995 workshop on Languages, compilers, & tools for real-time systems","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123697152","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
