The need for lighter and more efficient vehicles is becoming ever more crucial in light of the current trend in the depletion of petroleum reserves and the increasing effects of global warming. The effect that noise has on vehicle occupants is a growing concern as studies reveal the harmful effects that noise has on the human body. Hence, the automotive industry is under immense pressure to produce automobiles that are more environmentally-friendly. By acquiring available knowledge on the properties of porous sound absorbing materials and understanding the factors that influence sound absorption, designers can reduce vehicle weight and increase passive sound absorption and hence, reduce carbon dioxide emissions and improve vehicle cabin noise levels.","PeriodicalId":34979,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Vehicle Noise and Vibration","volume":"13 1","pages":"137"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48555260","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This leads to undesired noise and vibration in the total system. This paper deals with explanation and reduction of alternating force generation at the connection point of a motor due to radial forces acting on the stator teeth with an electric wheel hub drive being used as example. These alternating forces have a disturbing effect on the driver in the form of noise or vibrations. In our research, we developed a multi-physical simulation of the system which is compared with an operational vibration analysis from an experiment. The simulation shows that the main cause is the axially asymmetric structure of the housing. We reduced the alternating forces at the connection point by using an axially symmetric structure. An axially symmetric design also of other electric machines is to be expected to significantly improve the vibro-acoustic behaviour.","PeriodicalId":34979,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Vehicle Noise and Vibration","volume":"13 1","pages":"164"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42724502","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is achieved by identifying the main path by an adaptive filter which is based on input orthogonalisation by a DCT. Further for the proposed first ANC system, the available input orthogonal components are beneficially used in estimating the observation noise component required for the adaptive NC for the SPI. For the proposed second ANC system, the NC is based on an observation noise robust discrete cosine transform domain variable step-size Griffiths LMS (TVGLMS) algorithm. In both ANC systems, the NC enables improved SPI and this indirectly enables an improved ANC convergence performance. The second ANC system uses a noise robust variable step-size and gradient for its NC used in deriving the desired signal for SPI of an ANC system with TVGLMS noise canceller. The smoothed ensemble average square error (SEASE) is reduced by an additional 5 dB and its convergence rate is about 1.5 times faster over that of an ANC which uses only orthogonal components of its input. The performance of basic first ANC which uses input orthogonalisation only for its main path identification is very poor as its noise reduction is only -2.5 dB.","PeriodicalId":34979,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Vehicle Noise and Vibration","volume":"13 1","pages":"118"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46655510","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Noise pollution has undesirable effects on humans such as temporary or permanent loss of hearing, decrease in working efficiency and increase in accidents. The aim of this study is to assess noise pollution in the 1055I John Deere combine harvester. The tests were performed at different engine speeds, gear positions and sound measuring locations. The obtained data were analysed in the form of factorial test based on a completely randomised design. An artificial neural network model was created to predict the sound level in the combine. The results of variance analysis for the effects of the main factors on the level of sound were significant at probability level of 1%. The sound intensity reaching the driver's ear based on frequency analysis is equal to 84.16 dB at the frequency of 4000 Hz. The mean square error and the correlation coefficient for the best neural network with ten neurons in the hidden layer were obtained. The permitted time duration of driving the harvester was calculated to be less than 2 h.","PeriodicalId":34979,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Vehicle Noise and Vibration","volume":"13 1","pages":"105"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47897056","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Much work has been done in the past to evaluate ride comfort subjectively, but recent years have seen a marked increase in the development of objective/analytical methods. The following paper presents a method to mathematically separate the vibrational properties of the tyre and the suspension in order to further understand the mechanism of vibration transmission between the two. Frequency based substructuring (FBS) techniques will be used to decouple the tyre subsystem from the suspension subsystem. In this work, these FBS techniques are applied first to decouple the equations of motion of a simple quarter car system as a proof of concept. Then, a more generalised approach is taken which will be applicable to experimental data.","PeriodicalId":34979,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Vehicle Noise and Vibration","volume":"13 1","pages":"87"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45458254","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

EOSASS is a class of semi-active system where the orifice area is controlled electronically using an electric motor. The idea of EOSASS is to modify the internal fixed orifice of the existing passive damper into externally controllable using hydraulic unit. The behaviour of the EOSASS is tested in terms of its force-velocity and force-displacement characteristics using Instron 8801 Servohydraulic fatigue testing system and WaveMatrix dynamic testing software. The ratio of the orifice opening area for the compression and extension on the hydraulic unit is varied in order to study the hysteresis behaviour of the damper. From the experimental results, the relationship between the damping force and the ratio of orifice opening during extension and compression are obtained. It was verified that decreasing the ratio of orifice opening will produce higher damping force in both compression and extension stages.","PeriodicalId":34979,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Vehicle Noise and Vibration","volume":"13 1","pages":"73"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-08-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41865058","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Measures enhancing efficiency in combustion engines significantly increase engine vibrations. In order to provide a high level of comfort and low interior noise levels, isolation properties of engine mount systems have to compensate these increasing excitations. As existing analogous models of hydraulic mounts describe their behaviour only at low frequencies, we elaborate a model describing the isolation properties in a frequency range relevant for dominant engine orders. We deduce this model from parameter variation tests on hydraulic engine mounts using an electrodynamic test bench for characterisation. The parameters in the proposed model represent geometric properties as well as physical properties of springs, masses and dampening effects. Using the elaborated model helps to tune the parameters of engine mounts to the specific demands of different vehicles and to increase isolation properties.","PeriodicalId":34979,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Vehicle Noise and Vibration","volume":"13 1","pages":"38"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-08-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42863338","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The analytical models of the quarter rail vehicle with a passenger seat, describing the vertical motion, are presented for semi-active and passive suspensions. Two controllers, i.e., PID-ZN and LQR are designed in order to improve the passenger comfort. This comfort is evaluated in terms of the passenger displacement and vibration. These comfort criteria are evaluated as a response of a rail imperfection excitation. The obtained results prove that the semi-active suspension with a LQR controller yields the best results compared to PID controller.","PeriodicalId":34979,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Vehicle Noise and Vibration","volume":"13 1","pages":"52"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-08-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44362711","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The present study examined the efficacy of the use of lumbar cushion and seat cushion in reducing exposure to WBV. A total of 24 male participants completed 24 experimental sessions, a combination of two levels of rotational amplitude, three levels of rotational frequency and four levels of seating conditions. In each session, they were exposed to a five-minute vibration stimulus. The main and interaction effects of rotational amplitude, rotational frequency, and seating condition were significant (p < 0.01). The use of lumbar cushion and seat cushion reduced WBV exposure up to 12%, and the decline was more substantial at higher rotational frequency (i.e., higher speed) and higher rotational amplitude (i.e., rougher road condition). Lumbar and seat cushions can be used to improve driving health aspect in occupational setting.","PeriodicalId":34979,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Vehicle Noise and Vibration","volume":"13 1","pages":"26"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-08-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46004119","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The frequency response functions and a road surface model are set up to achieve responses such as vertical acceleration power spectral density and roll acceleration power spectral density. For the problem of the effect of hydraulic parameters on the hydraulically interconnected suspension response, a sensitivity analysis method based on fuzzy grey correlation is used and the influence degree of hydraulic parameters to vertical response and roll response is determined. The obtained results indicate that the valve connected to hydraulic chamber has a large impact on vertical vibration modal; accumulator and the valves connected to it make a large impact on roll vibration modal. This paper provides a theoretical basis for the selection of design variables in the optimisation of the suspension.","PeriodicalId":34979,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Vehicle Noise and Vibration","volume":"13 1","pages":"1"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-08-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42905080","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
