The proposed application uses RCNN, a pre-trained MobileNet V2 convolutional neural network, transfer learning, hough transform, and text-to-speech reader service to detect and classify captured currency and generate an auditory signal. To train our AI model, we collect 700 ultra-high definition images from the United Arab Emirates banknotes. We include the front and back faces of each banknote from various distances, angles, and lighting conditions to avoid overfitting. When triggered, our mobile application initiates a capture of an image using the mobile camera. The image is then pre-processed and input to our on-device currency detector and classifier. We finally use text-to-speech to change the textual class into an audio signal played on the user’s Bluetooth earpiece. Our results show that our system can be an effective tool in helping the visually challenged identify and differentiate banknotes using increasingly available smartphones. Our banknote classification model was validated using test-set and 5-fold cross-validation methods and achieved an average accuracy of 70% and 88%, respectively.","PeriodicalId":349690,"journal":{"name":"2022 9th International Conference on Future Internet of Things and Cloud (FiCloud)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126625285","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One important factor that influences peoples’ choices and behavior is the weather. Hence, accurate data are needed for making reliable predictions. Those weather data may be obtained either from publicly available open data services or measured by a custom sensor network. Despite the importance of weather data, the advantages and disadvantages of both approaches have not been studied systematically so far. Therefore, in this paper the design and implementation of a custom sensor network and results from its comparative evaluation with open weather data within a field experiment in a German city will be presented. Results indicate that for adequate accounting of local weather deviations (i.e. micro weather) within a city or urban area, public data services might not be sufficient and a custom sensor network should be implemented.","PeriodicalId":349690,"journal":{"name":"2022 9th International Conference on Future Internet of Things and Cloud (FiCloud)","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132557969","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Computation and storage operations combined with proof of work (PoW) to prevent attacks requires a lot of energy consumption. Due to the permissionless nature of blockchain, it is difficult to measure the energy consumed by each node. Therefore, estimation methods provide approximations such as lower and upper bounds on energy consumption. A recent work in this direction has shown that PoW is the most energy consuming consensus. In this context, there is a timely requirement to find solutions to optimize the energy consumption. Our proposal aims at building a typical consensus in distributed ledger with an asynchronous protocol to reduce wasted computations involved in the proof of work. For this purpose, we rely on a similarity search index to prevent double-spending attacks and reduce the difficulty mining involved in the PoW, by exploring how it influences the number of required iterations needed to solve the PoW.","PeriodicalId":349690,"journal":{"name":"2022 9th International Conference on Future Internet of Things and Cloud (FiCloud)","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130382871","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is a nature-inspired stochastic optimization algorithm, whose objective is to iteratively improve the solution of a problem over a given objective. The distribution of PSO to the edge would result in the transfer of resource-intensive computational tasks from the cloud to the edge, leading to more efficient use of existing resources. However, it introduces challenges related to performance and fault tolerance, due to the resource-constrained edge environment with a high probability of faults. We introduce multiple distributed synchronous variants of the PSO algorithm built on top of the Apache Spark distributed computing framework and Kubernetes container orchestration platform. These variants of the algorithm aim at addressing the performance and fault tolerance problems introduced by the execution in an edge network. A PSO algorithm that distributes the load across multiple executor nodes can effectively realize coarse-grained parallelism, thus can obtain a significant increase in performance, but also more fault tolerance and scalability.","PeriodicalId":349690,"journal":{"name":"2022 9th International Conference on Future Internet of Things and Cloud (FiCloud)","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115174026","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is important to decide what capability is visible at a specific physical location in the different layers of abstraction. Considering the diversity and heterogeneity of the infrastructure, it is critical to decide how data centers/clusters aggregate and expose their capabilities to the user to be accessible from the orchestration environment. In this paper, we propose a capability aggregation and exposure method. The proposed method relies on the detailed information of the underlying resource which can be extracted using OS built-in tools. It then aggregates and exposes this information using different algorithms. Our proposed method has many advantages such as applicability and flexibility. We evaluated the performance of the different algorithms and demonstrated the one that has the best performance.","PeriodicalId":349690,"journal":{"name":"2022 9th International Conference on Future Internet of Things and Cloud (FiCloud)","volume":"149 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125878804","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Security in this consensus depends on the number of nodes (aka validators) involved in the consensus: the higher the number of nodes, the higher the security level. However, increasing the number of validators goes along with an increase in the latency, and consequently a decrease in the throughput. The present research proposes a new SelfAdaptive BlockchaIn coNsEnsus protocol (Sabine), which tries to optimally address this trade-off by continuously adapting the size of the pool of validators with the prime objective that the output throughput (i.e., number of transactions validated at a given time) meets –to the best extent possible - the input throughput (i.e., requested by the application). Sabine is evaluated and validated in real-life settings, whose results show that Sabine has a relative error of 7.79% between the requested and committed transaction throughput, compared to 39.5% for a classic chain with all nodes participating in the consensus, implying a more reactive chain, with less latency.","PeriodicalId":349690,"journal":{"name":"2022 9th International Conference on Future Internet of Things and Cloud (FiCloud)","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124582473","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With disaggregation the entire rack is viewed as a single machine in which all resources are remotely accessible from anywhere in the rack. Because a large number of resources may be used remotely, the average access time to resources tends to be elongated compared to a non-disaggregated rack organization. This elongation represents a technology penalty of disaggregation and impacts application performance. This paper presents a model to capture basic tradeoffs between virtual machine (VM) lifetime elongation and improved memory mutualization in a rack with disaggregation. Our results show that disaggregation has the potential to significantly improve the maximum VM launch throughput provided the technology penalty remains moderate. Additionally, our model provides guidance for the number of servers to combine through disaggregation.","PeriodicalId":349690,"journal":{"name":"2022 9th International Conference on Future Internet of Things and Cloud (FiCloud)","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127372721","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This research paper investigates the penetration pattern of mobile phone data usage among students attending Nigerian universities. It used a quantitative research approach with data collected from 400 randomly chosen students at two main universities. This research work focused on the analysis data from the social and communications aspects of social networking platforms. Considering the use of mobile phones for a wide range of online activities, it was found that participants had service preferences when subscribing to one of the four major mobile network operators in Nigeria (MTN, 9Mobile, Airtel, and Globacom). The results show that the students use the mobile handsets primarily for calls, communications, accessing the web, and instant messaging on social media platforms. They also use their phones for other data-heavy options such as streaming music and movies. Their obsessive behaviors and time spent on social media applications reveal a consistent pattern of using their phones for entertainment rather than academic activities. The predictive analysis from the study confirms an insatiable need among youth for data-intensive applications on mobile phones. Moreover, the various mobile network providers must offer a balance of mobile phone capabilities to accommodate all-inclusive academic and career-related subscription services for customers.","PeriodicalId":349690,"journal":{"name":"2022 9th International Conference on Future Internet of Things and Cloud (FiCloud)","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122816658","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such applications rely heavily on data generated by connected devices (e.g., sensors). Consequently, leveraging these data in building data-driven predictive analytics tasks improves the Quality of Service (QoS) and, as a result, Quality of Experience (QoE). Such data support various data-driven tasks such as regression and classification. Analytics tasks require data and resources to be executed at the edge since transferring them to the cloud negatively affects response times and QoS. However, the network edge is characterized by limited resources compared to the cloud, being the subject of constraints that are violated upon offloading data-driven tasks to improper edge nodes. We contribute with an analytics task management mechanism based on the context of the requested data, the task delay sensitivity, and the VM utilization. We introduce a novel Fuzzy inference mechanism for determining whether data-driven tasks should be executed locally, offloaded to peer edge servers, or sent to the cloud. We showcase how our fuzzy reasoning mechanism efficiently derives such decisions by calculating the offloading probability per task. The derived optimal actions are compared against benchmark models in Edge Computing (EC).","PeriodicalId":349690,"journal":{"name":"2022 9th International Conference on Future Internet of Things and Cloud (FiCloud)","volume":"85 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124022649","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This research is conducted to fully understand our data and interpret the daily consumption of energy and its fluctuations for the different profiles. In our study, we analyze power consumption of five different buildings within the university campus: Teacher’s office and labs, Classrooms, Restaurant, Exterior Lighting and, Student Room (Girls-ground floor). Each type of energy consumption is described by observations, graphs, plots and conclusions that properly highlight the most efficient characteristics. The paper begins with a description of the smart meters helping us record consumption history that constitutes our data. Data cleaning is one of the important steps before using the data. In this study, we begin with a general description of the aspects of consumption, using graphs in this way to clearly show the different changes. We then present our own interpretations of these changes in order to provide a general understanding of the energy load consumption.","PeriodicalId":349690,"journal":{"name":"2022 9th International Conference on Future Internet of Things and Cloud (FiCloud)","volume":"66 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116289336","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
