Despite the importance of inundation \u0000and drying periods in tidal ecosystems, spatially-explicit measurements of frequency of \u0000ground exposure to air (the drying period) and its effect on mangrove forest cover have \u0000rarely been quantified. An eight-month long study was conducted of the tidal regime \u0000along a main channel in an overwashed island mangrove forest off the coast of Belize, \u0000Central America. Cumulative frequency distribution of tidal data were integrated within a \u0000geographic information system to model the spatial extent of ground exposure, and forest \u0000cover was estimated using the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). Empirical \u0000relationships between forest cover and exposure were quantified along seven cross \u0000sections, and along 23 transects. On average, exposure accounted for 43% of the variance \u0000in NDVI along cross sections. Composite data results for 23 transects showed a positive \u0000linear response of NDVI to exposure along both right (R2 = 0.31) and left (R2 = 0.14) \u0000banks, with no response in the upper channel area. On average, exposure accounted for \u000033% of the variance in NDVI on the right bank, and for 13% of the variance on the left \u0000bank. At a local scale, NDVI highest responses in the right bank ranged from R2 = 0.44 \u0000to R2 = 0.71. As a result, the atolls have experienced various levels of habitation in the last fifty years. Consequently, a thorough survey of the flora of the atolls has not been undertaken since William Randolph taylor visited the area in 1946 prior to the nuclear tests in the area. our chief research objectives were to document the terrestrial vascular plant species richness of both Rongelap and Ailinginae atolls and to provide baseline data on distribution between islets within the atolls. The flora of the atolls was investigated using transect methodologies and plant checklist surveys. Sixty-three vascular plant species were found on Rongelap atoll and 29 species were identified on Ailinginae atoll. The repatriation of the Rongelap community provides a wonderful opportunity for future research examining changes in species diversity and abundance throughout and following construction within the atoll.
