This subtle process calls for deep, enlightened introspection on the part of the caregiver, enabling him or her to accompany the patient with kindness and authenticity. This spiritual dimension, which transcends technical care, soothes the dying and their loved ones by offering them a space to express their fears and hopes. Studies of nurses show that they experience a range of feelings and sometimes symptoms similar to those found in post-traumatic shock.
