However, in most jurisdictions, several negative impacts of sand mining are evident but less reported, especially in developing countries. This study used a systematic review method to fill this gap in the literature to document the impacts of sand mining and its implications on sustainable development and governance with a focus on India. Findings documented increasing threats to the environment (marine, river channel, and ecosystems) as well as to livelihood which grossly impacts Agenda 2030. To fill this gap, we recommended the development of integrated sand mining management approaches and legal mechanisms from the micro and macro levels. This could be through local governance actions/initiatives at micro levels. An","doi":"10.54007/ijmaf.2022.14.1.77","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.54007/ijmaf.2022.14.1.77","url":null,"abstract":"Even though shipping and shipbuilding industries have been one of the leading industries in Korea, both industries have been suffered a long dark period since the global financial crisis 2008. In particular, since both industries are more sensitive to economic fluctuations than other industries, stable earnings are an important factor in stakeholders’ economic decision-making. This study investigates the difference of earnings persistence between shipping and shipbuilding industry using Ohlson’s model. Empirical results show that earnings persistence of shipbuilding industry is significantly higher than that of shipping industry. This result implies that the low earnings persistence of the shipping industry result from the global economic recession after the 2008 global financial crisis and government policies focused on the shipbuilding industry. On the other hand, the high earnings persistence of the shipbuilding industry can be attributed to high added value ship orders, intensive support from the government and economies of scale after the global financial crisis. In the case of the shipbuilding industry, high technology and ship quality are important factors for high earnings creation while in the shipping industry, intangible factors such as cargo service quality, route, and creditworthiness of cargo transportation are important factors for continuous earnings creation. Since Asia has become a manufacturing hub for the world economy with a large volume of exports and imports, this paper investigates the trading pattern of container line services for three major ports in Asia: that is, Shanghai, Singapore and Busan. Ports compete and co-operate with neighbouring ports in the region to generate the greater throughputs and subsequently creat economic values. Utilising the liner services data from AXS Marine’s Alphaliner database, this study proposes an inter-dependency ratio of container ports in a way to understand the degree of co-opeti-tion among the ports from a foreland perspective. The findings suggest that, the Singaporean port generates around 40% of its volume without depending on Shanghai and Busan, while the Busan port relies about 90% on Shanghai and Singapore to generate its volume. The Port of Busan is desperately needed to diversify the liner services/routes portfolio and expand its self-dependency to become a transhipment hub located in the Far East. This paper concludes by identifying several challenges and opportunities for the Port of Busan as a specified example.
