Some track sites are well known in the world due to their high scientific value. Korean government assigned dinosaur fossils as national monument to protect them. But the sites have been being damaged gradually due to prolonged weathering, development, or tourists. Korean government has tried consistently to conserve them with physical or chemical methods but it has limit to stop the damage perfectly. Projects have been set up to make digital archive of the footprints with a state-of-art 3D scan technology. The first goal of this project is to build highly accurate digital data of dinosaur footprints with 3D laser scanners to document them at current state. The second is to analyze the 3D data. The third is to propose proper working process and methodology for digital documentation of dinosaur footprints. Two projects had been performed successfully for six sites in the last two years by KAIST. Another project has been on-going this year. This paper shows the methodology and results of the previous two projects.","PeriodicalId":348792,"journal":{"name":"2010 16th International Conference on Virtual Systems and Multimedia","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125523862","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The metaphor of a city is widely used in the design of virtual worlds. However, a systematic approach to learning support in virtual cities is not fully developed yet. To fill the gap, we consider a city as a place for lifelong learning, with a broad spectrum of disciplines and areas of knowledge. We have investigated these aspects in the implementation of two projects where virtual reality was used for the contextualization of educational activities. Based on the experiences from these projects and related work, we propose an initial design of ‘Universcity’.","PeriodicalId":348792,"journal":{"name":"2010 16th International Conference on Virtual Systems and Multimedia","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127750771","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Both qualitative and quantitative methods were used to analyze survey data, using Everett Roger's Diffusion Theory as a theoretical framework. Survey questions were designed to address Roger's five attributes (relative advantage, compatibility, complexity, trialability, and observability). Results of the study will identify perceived benefits for the use of virtual worlds in educational settings of museums and libraries along with current predictors for adoption.","PeriodicalId":348792,"journal":{"name":"2010 16th International Conference on Virtual Systems and Multimedia","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127754116","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When there is a big event, a lot of pictures and movies are taken from various places at the same time. People want to record events with their digital devices as a memory or remembrance. We have some services to share these photos and movies, however, there is no viewer suitable to summarize and integrate these photos and movies for one event. Especially, when one event does not occur at one place but occur in a large area, it is difficult to visualize them. In this paper, we propose a novel viewer which enable people to see various experiences occurred at the same time. The viewer provides us three-dimensional view which includes space axis and time axis. We selected an event that occur in a large area, “the Last Run of the Express Noto”. The Express Noto is a train that runs from Tokyo to Kanazawa in Japan and takes about 7 hours. There is the last run event of the Express Noto in March, 2010. We recorded the event various kinds of recording methods, e.g., a digital camera, an portable movie camera, a voice recorder, tweets at “Twitter” with more than 10 people. Then we apply our data to our viewer that can visualize them three-dimensionally for easy understanding the expanse of simultaneous experience information. For evaluation of our system, we demonstrated this system at “The Railway Museum” in Japan, and find out usefulness which it's used at museum.","PeriodicalId":348792,"journal":{"name":"2010 16th International Conference on Virtual Systems and Multimedia","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130526612","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the requirement is not likely to be satisfied in uncontrolled real environments. Incorrectly tracked visual cues are the main cause of jitter which annoys users in augmented reality. Therefore, we propose a jitter suppression method that guesses the magnitude of camera motion based on a motion blur metric and suppresses jitter in such a way that only the high quality visual cues of which the motion information is not smaller than the magnitude are used for camera pose estimation. For increasing the reliability of the proposed method, existing no-reference edge-based motion blur metrics are evaluated and the most efficient one is selected. Through experimental results with real and synthetic images, we verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.","PeriodicalId":348792,"journal":{"name":"2010 16th International Conference on Virtual Systems and Multimedia","volume":"95 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115691653","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
