Directed Incremental Symbolic Execution (DiSE) is an intraprocedural technique for characterizing the impact of software changes on program behaviors. DiSE first estimates the impact of the changes on the source code using program slicing techniques, and then uses the impact sets to guide symbolic execution to generate path conditions that characterize impacted program behaviors. DiSE, however, cannot reason about the flow of impact between methods and will fail to generate path conditions for certain impacted program behaviors. In this work, we present iDiSE, an extension to DiSE that performs an interprocedural analysis. iDiSE combines static and dynamic calling context information to efficiently generate impacted program behaviors across calling contexts. Information about impacted program behaviors is useful for testing, verification, and debugging of evolving programs. We present a case-study of our implementation of the iDiSE algorithm to demonstrate its efficiency at computing impacted program behaviors. Traditional notions of coverage are insufficient for characterizing the testing efforts used to validate evolving program behaviors because they do not take into account the impact of changes to the code. In this work we present novel definitions of impacted coverage metrics that are useful for evaluating the testing effort required to test evolving programs. We then describe how the notions of impacted coverage can be used to configure techniques such as DiSE and iDiSE in order to support regression testing related tasks. We also discuss how DiSE and iDiSE can be configured for debugging; finding the root cause of errors introduced by changes made to the code. In our empirical evaluation we demonstrate that the configurations of DiSE and iDiSE can be used to support various software maintenance tasks.","PeriodicalId":348790,"journal":{"name":"2012 28th IEEE International Conference on Software Maintenance (ICSM)","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116370642","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Google has adapted one of the most reused computer operating systems (i.e., Linux) into an operating system for mobile devices (i.e., Android). The Android mobile operating system has become one of the most popular adaptations of the Linux kernel with approximately 60 millions new mobile devices running Android each year. Despite many studies on Linux, none have investigated the challenges and benefits of reusing and adapting the Linux kernel to mobile platforms. In this paper, we conduct an empirical study to understand how Android adapts the Linux kernel. Using software repositories from Linux and Android, we assess the effort needed to reuse and adapt the Linux kernel into Android. Results show that (1) only 0.7% of files from the Linux kernel are modified when reused for a mobile platform; (2) only 5% of Android files are affected by the merging of changes on files from the Linux repository to the Android repository; and (3) 95% of bugs experienced by users of the Android kernel are fixed in the Linux kernel repository. These results can help development teams to better plan software adaptations.","PeriodicalId":348790,"journal":{"name":"2012 28th IEEE International Conference on Software Maintenance (ICSM)","volume":"1218 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121590425","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The problem has given rise to several unsupervised automated approaches that use techniques such as clustering and Formal Concept Analysis. Although results are often partially correct, they usually require refinement to enable the developer to integrate domain knowledge. This paper presents the SUMO algorithm, an approach that is complementary to existing techniques and enables the maintainer to refine their results. The algorithm is guaranteed to eventually yield a result that is satisfactory to the maintainer, and the evaluation on a diverse range of systems shows that this occurs with a reasonably low amount of effort.","PeriodicalId":348790,"journal":{"name":"2012 28th IEEE International Conference on Software Maintenance (ICSM)","volume":"148 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122139318","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Studies continue to report that more time is spent reading, locating, and comprehending code than actually writing code. The increasing size and complexity of software systems makes it significantly more challenging for humans to perform maintenance tasks on software without automated and semi-automated tools to support them, especially in the error-prone tasks. Thus, software engineers increasingly rely on software engineering tools to automate maintenance tasks as much as possible. The program analyses that drive today's software engineering tools have historically focused on analyzing the program's data and control flow, dependencies, and other structural information about the program to uncover and prove program properties. Yet, a software system is more than just the source code and its structure. To build effective software tools, the underlying automated analyses need to use all the information available to make the tools as intelligent and useful as possible. By adapting natural language processing (NLP) to source code analysis, and integrating information retrieval (IR), NLP, and traditional program analyses, we can expect significant improvement in automated and semi-automated software engineering tools for many different software engineering tasks. In this talk, I will overview research in text analysis of software and discuss our achievements to date, the challenges faced in text analysis, and the opportunities for text analysis of software in the future.","PeriodicalId":348790,"journal":{"name":"2012 28th IEEE International Conference on Software Maintenance (ICSM)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130103521","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As software evolves, its build code evolves as well to accommodate necessary changes in the build process. As part of software maintenance, it is crucial to understand how the build code is changed (e.g. changes in build rules or dependencies), and to verify and validate the correctness of the build process with different build configurations. Due to Make's dynamic nature, understanding and managing the changes to Makefiles is not trivial. In this paper, we introduce a set of semantic changes to build code in Makefiles. We also develop MkDiff, a tool to detect the changes to a Makefile at the semantic level. MkDiff uses symbolic dependency graphs (SDG) to find all possible concrete rules from a Makefile, and the dependencies among them. For two SDGs built from a Makefile at two versions, it first detects changed and unchanged nodes via its SDG matching algorithm. Then, from those results, it derives the semantic changes to the Makefile. Our empirical evaluation for MkDiff showed that it can accurately detect semantic changes in Makefiles.","PeriodicalId":348790,"journal":{"name":"2012 28th IEEE International Conference on Software Maintenance (ICSM)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115541802","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, anecdotal evidence suggests that these tools often do not effectively address the complexities of building multilanguage software. To investigate this apparent problem, we have performed a qualitative study on a set of five multilanguage open source software packages. Surprisingly, we found build system problems that prevented us from building many of these packages out-of-the-box. Our key finding is that there are commonalities among build problems that can be systematically addressed. In this paper, we describe the results of this exploratory study, identify a set of common build patterns and anti-patterns, and outline research directions for improving the build process. One such finding is that multilanguage packages avoid certain build problems by supporting compilation-free extension. As well, we find evidence that concerns from the application and implementation domains may “leak” into the build model, with both positive and negative effects on the resulting build systems.","PeriodicalId":348790,"journal":{"name":"2012 28th IEEE International Conference on Software Maintenance (ICSM)","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116577406","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These methods take in a set of program execution profiles and output a list of suspicious program elements. The list of program elements ranked by their suspiciousness is then presented to developers for manual inspection. Currently, the suspicious elements are ranked in a batch process where developers' inspection efforts are rarely utilized for ranking. The inaccuracy and static nature of existing fault localization methods prompt us to incorporate user feedback to improve the accuracy of the existing methods. In this paper, we propose an interactive fault localization framework that leverages simple user feedback. Our framework only needs users to label the statements examined as faulty or clean, which does not require additional effort than conventional non-interactive methods. After users label suspicious program elements as faulty or clean, our framework incorporates such information and re-orders the rest of the suspicious program elements, aiming to expose truly faulty elements earlier. We have integrated our solution with three well-known fault localization methods: Ochiai, Tarantula, and Jaccard. The evaluation on five Unix programs and the Siemens test suite shows that our solution achieves significant improvements on fault localization accuracy.","PeriodicalId":348790,"journal":{"name":"2012 28th IEEE International Conference on Software Maintenance (ICSM)","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114747521","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
