However, very few work concerns on the problem of memory leak fixing. In this paper, we propose a dynamic approach for the weak reference based memory leak fixing. The approach can automatically infer the weakenable references in a program, rank them and report them to the user. The user can then weaken references according to the reports to fix the memory leaks.","PeriodicalId":348790,"journal":{"name":"2012 28th IEEE International Conference on Software Maintenance (ICSM)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124430916","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Time faults can be introduced not just during software development but also maintenance. So software maintainers without time information tend to have more chances to introduce unintended time behaviors. In this paper, we propose time change impact analysis to help maintainers estimate the potential influence of time changes on programs before the software evolves. Our main insight is that by being reminded and warned that a small-time change at some places in the source code will largely affect the whole task execution time, maintainers can be more cautious when updating such places. Because these places have a leverage effect that multiplies the task execution time in a subtle way, we call them time-leverage points. We give an approach to detect the time-leverage points based on a dynamic testing method, which instruments the program at a point for introducing a small delay and observes its impact on the task execution time. We implement a prototype tool and empirically evaluate the approach.","PeriodicalId":348790,"journal":{"name":"2012 28th IEEE International Conference on Software Maintenance (ICSM)","volume":"13 5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124529326","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These documents are meant to be tightly coupled with the actual implementation of the features they describe. In this paper we evaluate the value of high-level topic-based requirements traceability in the version control system, using Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA). We evaluate LDA topics on practitioners and check if the topics and trends extracted matches the perception that Program Managers and Developers have about the effort put into addressing certain topics. We found that effort extracted from version control that was relevant to a topic often matched the perception of the managers and developers of what occurred at the time. Furthermore we found evidence that many of the identified topics made sense to practitioners and matched their perception of what occurred. But for some topics, we found that practitioners had difficulty interpreting and labelling them. In summary, we investigate the high-level traceability of requirements topics to version control commits via topic analysis and validate with the actual stakeholders the relevance of these topics extracted from requirements.","PeriodicalId":348790,"journal":{"name":"2012 28th IEEE International Conference on Software Maintenance (ICSM)","volume":"56 4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129299542","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, presented techniques to date require human interactions to refine clustering results. In this paper, we proposed a novel dependency-based software clustering algorithm, SArF. SArF has two characteristics. First, SArF eliminates the need of the omnipresent-module-removing step which requires human interactions. Second, the objective of SArF is to gather relevant software features or functionalities into a cluster. To achieve them, we defined the Dedication score to infer the importance of dependencies and utilized Modularity Maximization to cluster weighted directed graphs. Two case studies and extensive comparative evaluations using open source and industrial systems show that SArF could successfully decompose the systems fitting to the authoritative decompositions from a feature viewpoint without any tailored setups and that SArF was superior to existing dependency-based software clustering studies. Besides, the case studies show that there exist measurable authoritativeness limits and that SArF nearly reached the limits.","PeriodicalId":348790,"journal":{"name":"2012 28th IEEE International Conference on Software Maintenance (ICSM)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130936390","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Text-based clone detectors, on the other hand, do very well with near-miss matching in source code. In this paper we introduce SIMONE, an adaptation of the mature text-based code clone detector NICAD to the efficient identification of structurally meaningful near-miss subsystem clones in graphical models. By transforming graph-based models to normalized text form, SIMONE extends NICAD to identify near-miss subsystem clones in Simulink models, uncovering important model similarities that are difficult to find in any other way.","PeriodicalId":348790,"journal":{"name":"2012 28th IEEE International Conference on Software Maintenance (ICSM)","volume":"05 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129616228","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A number of past studies by Treude et al., Storey, and Yuan et al. have shown that a wealth of interesting information is stored in these microblogs. However, microblogs also contain a large amount of noisy content that are less relevant to software developers in engineering software systems. In this work, we perform a preliminary study to investigate the feasibility of automatic classification of microblogs into two categories: relevant and irrelevant to engineering software systems. We extract features from the textual content of the microblogs and the titles of any URLs mentioned in the microblogs. These features are then used to learn a discriminative model used in classifying relevant and irrelevant microblogs. We show that our trained model can achieve a promising classification performance.","PeriodicalId":348790,"journal":{"name":"2012 28th IEEE International Conference on Software Maintenance (ICSM)","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115255399","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Plagiarism in proprietary software would not only lead to costly lawsuits, but also undermine the credibility of the organization. Hence detecting plagiarism in proprietary software is an urgent need. Though there exist a number of techniques for detecting plagiarism in student project assignments, they do not scale well in the case of large proprietary software. Especially when code snippets are plagiarized from the large number of available open source software. In this paper we propose a novel approach that applies Mining Software Repositories (MSR) based techniques to the problem of plagiarism detection. We create a programming style profile for each maintenance engineer by mining the version history and use that to detect source code commits that are likely to be plagiarized. Such suspected code fragments can be analyzed using any of the existing plagiarism detection techniques to confirm the plagiarism and ascertain the original code.","PeriodicalId":348790,"journal":{"name":"2012 28th IEEE International Conference on Software Maintenance (ICSM)","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123359323","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of our history refactoring is to improve the clarity and usefulness of the history without changing its overall effect. We have defined primitive history refactorings including their preconditions and procedures, and large refactorings composed of these primitives. Moreover, we have implemented a supporting tool that automates the application of history refactorings in the middle of a source code editing process. Our tool enables developers to pursue some useful applications using history refactorings such as task level commit from an entangled edit history and selective undo of past edit operations.","PeriodicalId":348790,"journal":{"name":"2012 28th IEEE International Conference on Software Maintenance (ICSM)","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128649667","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, what makes for an effective ode example remains an open question. Finding the haracteristics of the effective examples is essential in improving the appropriateness of these learning aids. To help answer this question we have onducted a qualitative analysis of the questions and answers posted to a programming Q&A web site called StackOverflow. On StackOverflow answers can be voted on, indicating which answers were found helpful by users of the site. By analyzing these well-received answers we identified haracteristics of effective examples. We found that the explanations acompanying examples are as important as the examples themselves. Our findings have implications for the way the API documentation and example set should be developed and evolved as well as the design of the tools assisting the development of these materials.","PeriodicalId":348790,"journal":{"name":"2012 28th IEEE International Conference on Software Maintenance (ICSM)","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115594926","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To suppress the above time cost and make the repair process more efficient, a recompilation technique called weak recompilation is described in this paper. In weak recompilation, a program is assumed to be constructed from a set of components, and for each candidate patch only the changed code fragment in term of one component is recompiled to a shared library; the behaviors of patched program are observed by executing the original program with an instrumentation tool which can wrap specified function. The advantage of weak recompilation is that redundant recompilation cost can be suppressed, and reinstallation cost will be cut down completely. We also built WAutoRepair, a system which enables scalability to fix bugs in large-scale C programs with high efficiency. The experiments confirm that our repair system significantly outperforms Genprog, a famous approach for automatic program repair. For the wireshark program containing over 2 millions lines of code, WAutoRepair spent only 0.222 seconds in recompiling one candidate patch and 8.035 seconds in totally repairing the bug, compared to Genprog separately taking about 20.484 and 75.493 seconds, on average.","PeriodicalId":348790,"journal":{"name":"2012 28th IEEE International Conference on Software Maintenance (ICSM)","volume":"163 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123057465","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
