Body composition of southern hake did not show significant differences in dry matter, protein or ash content between both studied groups. Conversely, lipid content was significantly higher in the whole body of captive fish compared to the wild fish. In addition, the concentration of linoleic, docosahexaenoic and eicosapentaenoic acids, showed significantly higher level in captive hake than the wild hake. Amino acids concentrations did not vary between fish, except threonine and taurine. Threonine concentration was higher in wild hake whereas taurine concentration was higher in captive hake. The results of this comparative study provide a better understanding of the effects of supplemented feed currently used to acclimate and maintain in captivity southern hake broodstock.","PeriodicalId":347046,"journal":{"name":"Revista de Biología Marina y Oceanografía","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122335530","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the Gulf of California, Mexico, they are found in areas that overlap with human activities, as in the case of the Ensenada de La Paz lagoon. A custom-made recorder -moored at medium depth (2.0 m) in the entrance to the lagoon- recorded acoustic data from June to November 2017 (8 deployments; 293 h). Whistles -an indicative of bottlenose dolphin presences- were pooled over time to acquire acoustic encounters, which were analysed to infer continuity of animal presence and test for statistically significant differences between deployments, day and night, and hours. Whistles were recorded during all deployments and evidenced night-time presence of bottlenose dolphins in the lagoon. Significant differences of acoustic encounters were observed between ‘Jun-Jul’ and ‘Sep-Nov’. Acoustic encounters were higher at night but were not different at an hourly level. Acoustical data proved the continuous presence of bottlenose dolphins, highlighting the importance of the Ensenada de La Paz for their population. This initial study highlights the usefulness of long-term passive acoustic monitoring to inform stake holders involved in management and conservation plans.","PeriodicalId":347046,"journal":{"name":"Revista de Biología Marina y Oceanografía","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133165023","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Su monitoreo permite conocer el estado de sus poblaciones y la salud del ecosistema. Por esta razón, se determinará la diversidad, abundancia y distribución espacial y temporal de MM del centro-sur de Chile. Observadores científicos registraron presencia estacional de MM a lo largo de un año desde plataformas en tierra y mar (invierno-2016 a otoño-2017). Se identificaron 4 especies de MM con un total de ~12.000 avistamientos. La especie más frecuente fue el león marino (LMC, ~99%), luego el delfín chileno (DCh) y registros aislados de ballena franca austral y ballena azul. Los mayores avistamientos del LMC y cetáceos mayores se registraron en verano, mientras para DCh, fue en otoño. En Cobquecura se concentraron los mayores avistamientos de LMC (>80%). Los cetáceos mayores se avistaron a >1.500m de la costa y los DCh a <500m, entorno al río Itata. En el mar, los mayores avistamientos de LMC se registraron en primavera, durante el periodo de actividad pesquera, al igual que el mayor registro de lobos muertos. Pese a que la cantidad de MM identificados aquí, no es mayor a lo descrito para otras partes de Chile, se debe considerar que tres de estas especies están clasificadas bajo algún criterio de amenaza. Además, existe una de las más importantes agrupaciones de DCh y LMC del centro-sur de Chile, expuestas a importantes interacciones operacionales con la pesquería. Esto hace necesario establecer con prontitud medidas de protección del litoral para asegurar la conservación de estos mamíferos marinos en el centro-sur de Chile y con ello, en toda la costa chilena.","PeriodicalId":347046,"journal":{"name":"Revista de Biología Marina y Oceanografía","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132181244","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study examines the biological association between fifteen snails (124.86 ± 19.01) from the species Pacific crown conch Melongena patula and the porcelain crab Euceramus transversilineatus. Morphometric relationships of both invertebrates, as well as some sexual characteristics of the crab were conducted. These invertebrates were sampled in the Navachiste Lagoon, in the south eastern Gulf of California, Sinaloa, Mexico. It was found 86.6% of the snails housed at least a female or a male porcelain crab (17.82 ± 3.27 mm total body length) or a pair of them (heterosexual and same sex) with a sexual proportion of 2M:1F. There were no correlations between any of the crab and snail based on their analyzed morphometric relationships. For the crab males, the measurements of both chelae presented relationships with total body length, carapace length, and abdomen width however, no significant differences were observed between the mean width and chelae length of males, females or between sexes. Of the six females collected, four were gravid. Preliminary observations indicated that the porcelain crab E. transversilineatus is a commensal endosymbiont that coexist in short-term association with M. patula. Their population distribution suggests that E. transversilineatus are polygamous with a promiscuous mating pattern.","PeriodicalId":347046,"journal":{"name":"Revista de Biología Marina y Oceanografía","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128365020","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Se utilizaron dos tamaños de siembra 2,9 y 6,2 mm y dos densidades [1 (D1) y 2 (D2) semillas cm-2] en tratamientos con (TA) y sin arena (TSA) con semillas pequeñas. Se determinó el crecimiento y la supervivencia de semillas pequeñas en long-line instalados en la periferia y en el centro de la concesión de acuicultura. En el experimento de tamaño de siembra las semillas pequeñas crecieron en promedio 5,0 mm y las grandes 4,9 mm en TA y en el TSA 0,9 mm y 0,7 mm, respectivamente. La supervivencia de las semillas en TA (pequeñas= 51,3%; grandes= 62,3%) fue mayor que en TSA (pequeñas= 18,9%; grandes= 40,0%). En el experimento de densidad, las mayores longitudes se presentaron en TA, con un crecimiento promedio 5,0 mm en D1 y 4,5 mm en D2. La mayor supervivencia se obtuvo en TA (D1= 51,3%; D2= 49,4%) y la menor en TSA (D1= 18,9%; D2= 7,1%. El crecimiento de las semillas pequeñas fue mayor en los long-line ubicados en la periferia, no observándose diferencias en la supervivencia. It contains fucoidan which has a pharmacological effect on lipids and glucose metabolism. Some brown seaweeds can bioaccumulate toxic elements in their cell wall, representing a problem if toxicity tests that guarantee the safety of their consumption are not done. M. pyrifera, does not present toxicological studies that guarantee its safety. This work aimed to perform the acute and subchronic toxicological evaluation of M. pyrifera in rodents as well as to determine its possible therapeutic effect. Fronds of M. pyrifera were collected in Baja California Sur, Mexico, for drying and obtaining algae flour. The acute toxicity test LD50 was performed in C57BL / 6 male mice (25 ± 3 g) for 7 days, finding an LD50 greater than 10 g kg-1. Subchronic toxicity was determined for 121 days in adult male Sprague Dawley rats (98 ± 2 g), during which the experimental animals showed no signs of toxicity, or changes in the hematological, biochemical and histopathological parameters of the organs. The reactive oxygen species, lipid peroxidation or glutathione ratio were not different from the control group. A therapeutic effect on the regulation of body weight and a hypolipidemic effect (triacylglycerides: 82.27 ± 5.55 mg dl-1, cholesterol: 98.61 ± 6.48 mg dl-1) were found. It is concluded that, under the conditions in which this study was developed, the consumption of M. pyrifera as a functional ingredient is safe.","PeriodicalId":347046,"journal":{"name":"Revista de Biología Marina y Oceanografía","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123480196","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Existen escasos registros de la anatomía de Selene Lacépède, 1802. El objetivo fue la determinación de la relación entre la forma comprimida del cuerpo de S. vomer y la organización de los órganos dentro la cavidad visceral. Mediante disección se determinaron los límites esqueléticos de la cavidad visceral y se analizó, describió e ilustró la anatomía de los órganos contenidos en la misma. La cavidad visceral es aplanada lateralmente, de aspecto lateral trapezoidal, vertical y extendida extra visceralmente mediante las cavidades viscerales secundarias. La vejiga gaseosa es amplia, unicameral, y desarrolla hacia atrás dos lóbulos posteriores. El mesonefros es comprimido y curvado y forma dos lóbulos renales anteriores. El tubo digestivo se dispone verticalmente y muestra un conjunto de ciegos duodenales ramificados. Las gónadas tienen una posición diagonal. Se reconoce una relación directa del aplanamiento lateral del cuerpo con la forma comprimida de la cavidad visceral y de sus órganos. La forma de la cavidad visceral está relacionada con el alargamiento vertical de las cinturas escapular y pélvica, las costillas pleurales y el primer pterigióforo anal.
