The author outlines the main directions of historical studies, including the history of the main religious protestant directions, trends, and movements; the history of theological problems; the history of the modern Protestant movements, aimed at union with Orthodoxy; the history of dogmatic and canonical Protestant principles; the history of the symbolic and liturgical books of religious denominations; research of prereform movements; and biographical studies. The article proves the effectiveness of comparative and hermeneutic methods used by Kyiv historians in determining the specifics of religious phenomena. It has established that a characteristic feature of their historical studies is the consideration of religious phenomena in the broad historical perspective by clarifying the historical preconditions of formation and development of these phenomena. The analysis of historical studies shows transformation in Kyiv historians understanding of the theoretical and methodological foundations of the study of religious traditions different from Orthodoxy. In the works on the history of Protestantism from the 1860s till the 1870s the use of dogmatic-theological approach is common, while in the studies from the 1880s to the beginning of the 1900s the use of church-historical approach is widespread. The first dogmatic-theological approach concentrates on researching only dogmatic principles of a certain religion, while the second church-historical approach pays attention to the definition of the religious phenomenon specificity. The Jjournal publications present the results of the Kyiv Theological Academy professors’ and students’ involvement in the solution of the actual Church life problems in the end of the 19th– beginning of the 20th century, such as the problem of Anglican and Orthodox Churches dialogue. The conference was founded in 2006 as an initiative of NaUKMA’s philosophy students supported by the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies. For the following years, it has become an important annual event for the Ukrainian philosophical community. In 2018, the topic of the conference was “History of Philosophy and histories of philosophies”. The conference included the following sections: “The Approaches to the History of Philosophy”; “History of Ideas, Notions, Concepts”; “Epistemological Issues in the History of Philosophy”; “Receptions of the History of Philosophy”; “History of Philosophy and Gender Studies”; and “Oriental Studies”. In addition, two lectures were delivered during the conference: “Subjective Notes from the Recent History of Ukrainian Academic Philosophy of Science” (lecturer: Prof. Dr. Volodymyr Kuznetsov) and “The Vicious Circle of Sexual Politics’ Triumphalism” (lecturer: Dr. Kateryna Honcharenko). Also, two panel discussions took place at the conference: “What to Do with the Philosophical Education” and “The Problems of Philosophical Research in the East”. Although the participants of the conference have covered a large number of topics in their reports, several tendencies can be identified as prevailing. The biggest percentage of reports was connected with a methodology called History of ideas, notions, and concepts, while the discussions related to oriental and gender studies unfolded in the light of critique of Eurocentrism and Androcentrism respectively. There is an analysis of the conceptual approaches of the Kyiv scholar to the concept of the human individuality. Attention is drawn to those conceptual influences which contributed to the personalistic position of Olesnitskyi. They were G. Leibniz and F. Schleiermacher. In his studies, the Kyiv scholar always took into account the ideas of these thinkers concerning a human and his or her individuality. In particular, he liked the idea of Leibniz, who considered a individuality as a “complete whole”, a certain singularity, the conceptual definition of which does not require the treatment of general entities (type and genus). Also, he was inspired by the ideas of Schleiermacher, for whom individuality was a special modification of mankind. Schleiermacher thought that the human nature could not be considered separately from the individual selfexpression, cultural diversity of people. It was discovered that the Kyiv scholar needed the analysis of the human individuality for the research of the human personality that was considered as an individual having own personality. This makes it possible to consider the personality as a “being-for-itself”, as an independent being that is capable of making a moral choice. Olesnitskyi treats a person as a subjective focus of reason, will, and feelings, as well as the basis of history. In the article, one can see how the Kyiv professor treats attempts to implement mathematical and statistical methods to the study of social life. It is worth mentioning that those attempts were innovative for that period of time. The article includes an analysis of the standpoints of famous European researchers, among whom there were J. Sussmilch, A. Quetelet, H. Buckle, A. Wagner, and A. Oettingen. They demonstrated the efficiency of these methods application for both the analysis of the social and economic life of society and the study of his moral life (A. Oettingen called this phenomenon “moral statistics”), which made possible the appearance of social ethics. One can notice the positive as well as the critical attitude of the Kyiv acholar towards the already-mentioned research. Based on a wide range of primary sources (Theological Academies Statutes, the Most Holy Synod Decrees, journals of the Kyiv Theological Academy Conference, reports and minutes of the Academic Council meetings, handwritten and printed Candidate Degree works of the Kyiv Theological Academy graduates, their memoires, etc.), the author refutes the false identification of works for obtaining of the degree of Candidate of Theology, written in the Orthodox theological academies of the Russian Empire, with the modern Candidate dissertations. Considering these works as qualifying works for obtaining an academic degree of Candidate of Theology that are of similar status as the modern diploma works of higher education institution students, the author argues that such an approach does not diminish their importance and their great source potential in the study of scholarly work of the Orthodox theological academies of the 19th – early 20th centuries. Based on the example of the Kyiv Theological Academy, the article reveals the important role of independent research work of the students, their mastering of skills of academic reading and writing in creating Candidate Degree works of quality; explains the procedural moments associated with their preparation, review, and evaluation. Based on the preserved manuscripts of Candidate Degree works of the Kyiv Theological Academy students, the paper outlines their subjects related to Bible Studies, Patrology, Dogmatic, Comparative, Moral, Pastoral Theology, Liturgy, and Homiletics, which are considered chiefly on historical material. The author stresses the particular popularity of the studies in History of the Church at the Kyiv Theological Academy, as well as other theological academies, particularly the study of history of the Orthodox Church and its hierarchy in so-called Southewestern Krai of the Russian Empire (de-facto – the lands of modern Ukraine), as well as the history of the Kyiv Theological Academy of the 17th – 19th centuries. The article clarifies that contrary to the requirements of the Most Holy Synod to offer and choose the topics of exclusively theological nature for the qualification works, The Kyiv Theological Academy found the opportunity to realize the interest of students in other humanities – first of all, philosophy, the evidence of which is more than one hundred remaining manuscripts of Candidate Degree works on philosophical issues. It must seek facts and care about thoughts. The discussion on this subject is continuing. The purpose of this article is to clarify the specific role of the subjectivity in the historiography of philosophy and consider functions and forms of its presence in research texts. Actually, texts are the place in which a researcher carries out him/herself as the researcher. So, he/she obtains the identity in the text or does not at all. It means that the subjectivity as the instance of the cognitive activity does not coincide with the empirical subject and must be reconstructed in the text. It is the first. The second is that in the text the researcher builds bridges between past and present: the past gains access to the present, and vice versa – the present has access to the past. He/ she does not speak with the own voice but must hear another. The third is that the existence of interpreters as a social group rejects the legitimacy of a direct contact between the text and the reader and promises the contact in the text of the researcher. Taking to account these assumptions I show a role of subjectivity in the sort of cognition, which historiography of philosophy is. I give answers to such questions. What do the historians of philosophy say in his/her texts? What is the specificity of philosophical communication with the past? What requirements to the reader do the philosophical texts “put forward”? What is the role of mood and feeling in saving contacts with philosophical thought of the past? The analysis is based on some theoretical ideas of Y. Ch. Zarka (Philosophical History of Philosophy) and F. R. Ankersmit (sublime historical experience). The conclusions are confirmed with a brief comparative analysis of two publications on the philosophy of the eighteenth century. The author tries to show that some of these “proto-psychoanalytical” processes are reflected in the works of alumni and lecturers of the Kyiv Theological Academy. In particular, some interest to the concept of the unconscious can be traced in some works of Orest Novytskyi, Petro Linytskyi, Hryhorii Malevanskyi, Markellin Olesnytskyi, Fedir Ornatskyi, Oleksii Kyrylovych. It has been shown that such regard to unconscious was influenced by the ideas of such Western philosophers as Friedrich Schelling, Arthur Schopenhauer, Eduard von Hartmann, Immanuel Fichte, Paul Janet, and others. It is noted that the Kyiv Theological Academy alumnus and lecturer Matvii Troitskyi came as close as possible to the definition of such an important psychoanalytical phenomenon as transference. A great deal of attention in the article is focused on the works of the Kyiv Theological Academy alumnus Mykhailo Verzhbolovych. In his books and articles, we can find an examination of a whole series of concepts, ideas, considerations, attitudes, and practices that played an important role in shaping different versions of psychoanalysis. Verzhobolovich dealt with those issues, analyzing the views of the already mentioned and several other philosophers, as well as a number of leading European psychologists of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, such as Johann Herbart, Hermann Ulrici, Wilhelm Wundt, Theodore Flournoy, etc. In the series of Verzhbolovych’s works on various occult phenomena, the author unveils many parallels with the formation of Carl Jung’s analytical psychology. The above helps to avoid a narrow view on the development of science in the Kyiv Theological Academy. Although it was primarily a religious institution, specialists with a broad outlook studied and worked under its roof. They conducted up-to-date researches based on the knowledge of both philosophical origins and new trends within various disciplines, including psychology. In recent years, many studies have been launched in Ukraine, whose authors are trying to demonstrate the relevance of his work also in terms of contemporary science. It remains unclear as to when and how he was recognized in the West, which of his colleagues he influenced in his own life, how his academic achievements are now appreciated in foreign professional circles. Trying to fill this gap, the author of the paper created Sikorsky’s personal profile on the Internet platform “Google Scholar” (“Google Academy”). This Internet-based platform is regularly used to calculate citations of the contemporary scholars and publications. However, as it has turned out, Google Scholar may also be a useful tool for the historical research. This search engine collates information on almost all of the Sikorsky’s works, including those written or translated into foreign languages and published abroad. Despite the fact that Google Scholar identified and included in its own list not all of the existing references, it nevertheless helped to reconstruct a rather large and representative bibliography. Combining the quantitative and qualitative analysis of relevant information from Google Scholar as well as such tools as Google Books, Internet Archive, JSTOR, etc. helps to clarify and substantially expand the understanding of Sikorsky’s place within the history of science and the treatment of his works in the West. As it is clearly shown in the article, he became one of the brightest domestic representatives of the leading trends in the world psychology. A significant number of Western experimental psychologists of the late nineteenth and first half of the twentieth century (including such prominent figures as Alfred Binet, Franz Boas, Edouard Claparede, Edward Thorndike, etc.) were actively referring to his pioneering researches on the phenomenon of mental fatigue in children. It is also shown that the contribution made by Sikorsky to the development of psychology and pedagogy has not been forgotten by the contemporary researchers.","PeriodicalId":34696,"journal":{"name":"Naukovi zapiski NaUKMA Filosofiia ta religiieznavstvo","volume":"23 7 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82676982","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
