Clay brick (20 cm ), cement brick (20 cm ), and autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) (20 𝑐𝑚 ) blocks were the four materials evaluated. Each wall material is reinforced with (4 cm extruded polystyrene (XPS) insulation in the fourth, fifth, and sixth scenarios. The study used a life cycle assessment (LCA) technique to assess the environmental impact of these products from cradle to gate, including raw material extraction, processing, and transportation. The outcomes showed that the environmental effects of the four materials varied greatly regarding the three impact categories of potential global warming, non-renewable energy use, and respiratory pollution. Regarding the midpoint result, the AAC ranked second by 1.49 𝑝𝑡 , followed by the cement bricks by 2.25 pt , with the clay brick recording the lowest environmental effect. The environmental impacts in the three final scenarios increased by 1.24 pt , 1.86 𝑝𝑡 , and 2.55 𝑝𝑡 , and an incremental rate of 13% when the XPS was added to the three wall types. The 20 𝑐𝑚 cement brick recorded the highest value, 8.40K KG Co 2 e, and the 4 cm XPS + 20 𝑐𝑚 cement brick composition recorded the lowest value, 1.97K KG Co 2 e. When considering the endpoint results, the cement brick recorded the highest values by 8.40K 𝐾𝐺 𝐶𝑜 2 e, which show climate change has the most significant impacts. Regarding the resource's depletion impact, cement bricks recorded the highest values with 138.42K Mj primay . The study's findings provide important details regarding the environmental effects of composition wall materials. They can influence decisions made in the construction sector, favoring greener building practices. © 2024 Published by Faculty of Engineering – Sohag University. Through face-to-face interviews, mosque users have expressed a desire for a range of specific characteristics in their places of worship, further highlighting the importance of incorporating user input into the design process. The study aims to examine the design features of various mosques and assess their compliance with user preferences, with the broad goal of ensuring that mosques are capable of addressing their functional role. A field survey of six mosques was carried out. The findings show that mosque designers have not fully considered these preferences, resulting in a relative discrepancy between user preferences and actual mosque designs, which introduces concerns about the effectiveness and functionality of mosque spaces. Accordingly, the study recommends active community engagement in the design process from the early stages and emphasizes the need for retrofitting current mosques to address design deficiencies. In this context, the findings are useful for identifying areas for improvement for current and future mosques. They can also be utilized as a practical guideline for architects, designers, and other stakeholders involved in the mosque building process. © 2024 Published by Faculty of Engineering – Sohag University. Moreover, the analysis aims to gain a better understanding of the load transfer mechanisms of the piled foundations due to an adjacent excavation. The influences of excavation depth, pile group location from excavation, initial working load, supporting system stiffness, and stiffness of piles and cap are investigated. As excavation proceeds, settlement and tilting of the adjacent buildings can be observed at different stages of excavation. The pile group settles to its maximum amount when the rear piles are in the position of maximum greenfield ground surface settlement. The settlement of the pile group can be significantly reduced by increasing the supporting system stiffness and decreasing the pile cap's applied load. The pile group settlement due to the excavation increases from 2.99 to 3.80% of the pile diameter when the ratio of applied load to ultimate load-carrying capacity of the pile group increases from 0.25 to 0.5. A clearly noticeable tilting can be observed when the pile group is located near the excavation. By increasing the pile cap's applied load and supporting system stiffness, the pile group tilting decreases. The settlement and tilting of the pile group are almost insensitive to the modulus of elasticity of the concrete piles and the cap. Loads are transferred between the toe and the shaft of the piles at different excavation stages.","PeriodicalId":34550,"journal":{"name":"Sohag Engineering Journal","volume":"15 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139610371","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study also presents a preliminary step toward developing a force reduction factor for concrete columns reinforced with hybrid reinforcement. Nonlinear finite-element analysis (FEA) was used as a tool to achieve the research target. A novel FEA model for RC columns that captures the behavior of concrete columns solely reinforced with steel or GFRP bars and have been previously published by the first author, was first summarized. The study was then extended to test the effect of using hybrid reinforcement in terms of crack patterns, failure modes and load–lateral displacement hysteretic response. The force reduction for the hybrid RC specimen was also estimated. The reported test results clearly revealed that properly detailed hybrid RC columns have a recoverable and self-centering ability. The hybrid RC column sufficiently achieved the maximum drift meeting the limitation of most building codes. Acceptable levels of energy dissipation accompanied by relatively small residual forces, compared to the steel-reinforced column, were observed. The force reduction factor was suggested to be taken 2.5 for hybrid RC columns.","PeriodicalId":34550,"journal":{"name":"Sohag Engineering Journal","volume":"198 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134918081","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
