Key elements in feminist- and social justice–informed health promotion approaches to positive embodiment relate to the (a) goals, (b) content, (c) process, and (d) assessment of health promotion interventions. The chapter discusses each of these four key dimensions and related interventions in the field of body image and embodiment. Such approaches can target varied social domains and institutions, all the way from widely disseminated values and laws to specific interventions with schools and families. Further, they can enrich the fields of body image and eating disorders by informing etiological theories of embodied well-being and distress and health promotion initiatives.","PeriodicalId":345461,"journal":{"name":"Handbook of Positive Body Image and Embodiment","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114863343","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Yet, women’s personal safety is continuously threatened within environments that promote or excuse the sexual objectification of women via prompting vigilant policing of women’s safety, which fragments their consciousness, restricts their movement, and limits their freedom. This chapter begins by discussing the safety threats of sexual objectification, whereby the omnipresent threat and perpetration of violence against women by men keep them in a state of fear and alert to their more vulnerable status. Next, the chapter considers how the disruptive, and terrorizing, nature of sexual objectification limits women’s positive embodiment (e.g., restricts voluntary movement, adds to psychological distress, creates a hyperawareness and anxiety about safety), and presents research that uphold these links. The chapter ends with considering ways of claiming space in the world and the imperative for cultivating women’s safety through social activism and embodied social change.","PeriodicalId":345461,"journal":{"name":"Handbook of Positive Body Image and Embodiment","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115668174","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The concepts of the embodied brain and embodied mindfulness are defined and described as essential for supporting the shift from thinking and judging toward being and experiencing. Embodiment is then explored in terms of how it supports and develops integration of the brain through stimulation and coordination of brain networks, citing recent research findings to illustrate key points. Embodying interventions that enhance brain integration are described, including embodied mindfulness practices such as self-compassion protocols, mindful approaches to addiction, and sensorimotor psychotherapy for trauma. Postural and mindful-action interventions are also described, including work with posture for individuals with depression and yoga as an adjunct intervention for disordered eating.","PeriodicalId":345461,"journal":{"name":"Handbook of Positive Body Image and Embodiment","volume":"87 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131697946","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It provides an overview of emotion regulation and dysregulation and highlights possible links between emotion regulation deficits, negative body image, and disordered eating. It reviews the application of EFT in the treatment of emotion dysregulation and describes EFT interventions that help enhance positive embodiment and positive body image. The chapter also reviews outcome research on the application of EFT in healing bodily and emotional disruptions in adults and adolescents through individual and group psychotherapy. The chapter concludes with suggestions for future directions to advance the application of EFT to transform body shame into more attuned and empowering ways to inhabit the body.","PeriodicalId":345461,"journal":{"name":"Handbook of Positive Body Image and Embodiment","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128902728","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This chapter first details the 10 principles of intuitive eating. Next, the chapter reviews the original and revised Intuitive Eating Scale (the IES and IES-2, respectively), which have been shown to yield reliable and valid scores in samples across different cultures. The chapter then discusses research and interventions on intuitive eating, revealing that it is an adaptive way of eating and living. The chapter ends with seven insights gleaned from intuitive eating research that can be used to situate and guide future investigations. Specifically, intuitive eating is grounded in body acceptance, is dependent on trust in internal body cues, is sabotaged for some individuals, is nurtured in autonomy-supportive environments, is intricately connected to self-compassion, can be taught (even among those with eating disorders), and is not positively associated with overeating.","PeriodicalId":345461,"journal":{"name":"Handbook of Positive Body Image and Embodiment","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125800611","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To help explain these findings, this chapter examines theory and data concerning the relationship between gender role expectations and women’s and men’s embodiment. Data show that traditional feminine roles promote a focus on appearance and self-objectification that is negatively associated with body empowerment, while traditional masculine roles promote more functional body experiences associated with greater embodiment. This chapter discusses how gender roles can be changed to promote positive embodiment. According to social role theory, traditional gender roles result from, and help support, a gender unequal society. Feminism has led to some change in gender roles, but more change is needed, such as encouragement of caretaking among boys and men and instrumental traits and roles for girls and women. There is also the need to render people less vulnerable to body image pressures, supporting body empowerment during development.","PeriodicalId":345461,"journal":{"name":"Handbook of Positive Body Image and Embodiment","volume":"104 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132759775","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
