First, the general expressions of constitutive tensors of the N-sided regular polygonal cylindrical cloaks are derived, then there are some full-wave simulations of the cloaks that are composed of inhomogeneous and anisotropic metamaterials, which will bend incoming electromagnetic waves and guide them to propagate around inner region, such electromagnetic waves will return to their original propagation directions without distorting the waves outside the polygonal cloak. Thermo-optical effect and the index of refraction changes due to temperature in microring resonator are used to manipulate dispersion quantity. Finite-difference time-domain method (FDTD) is used to investigate the characteristics of the microring resonator. The new design exhibits an ON-OFF contrast with an extinction ratio of more than 12 dB, an ultra-compact footprint of 3.3times3.3 mum2, and tuning efficiency of 0.08 nm/degC when it operates at the optical communication wavelength lambda =1.55 mum. For the efficient algorithms developed, the integral equation solvers accelerated using the adaptive integral (equation) method (AIM) and also the pre-corrected fast Fourier transform (pFFT) technique were developed and various examples in the designs will be demonstrated. In the second case, a single antenna designed using the metamaterial properties is considered, designed, fabricated, and measured. It is shown that the new design of the metamaterial antenna has a low loss (or high gain) and a broad bandwidth and this was never achieved using the conventional technique. The development of the metamaterial antennas was further extended to an array antenna and some interesting and promising results will be provided.","PeriodicalId":345360,"journal":{"name":"2008 International Workshop on Metamaterials","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122027767","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Fullwave finite element simulations are given to confirm the validity of the design, where the cloaking device is illuminated by plane waves and cylindrical waves, respectively. To validate the proposed structured design and analysis, the layout board of bandpass filter was fabricated and measured. Although creating metamaterials at the optical frequency range faces numerous technological challenges, such materials with particular properties have been realized gradually based on new device concepts. In this talk, we present our efforts to employ specific metamaterials to manipulate the polarization states of incident lights, in both microwave [1, 2] and optical frequency regimes [3]. Experimental results reveal that the maximum polarization conversion ratio (PCR) value can reach 100% in microwave regime (see left figure below) and 92% in optical frequency (see right figure blow) under certain conditions. Theoretical studies combined with numerical simulations show that the governing physics is dominated by the unique reflection properties of the metamaterials.","PeriodicalId":345360,"journal":{"name":"2008 International Workshop on Metamaterials","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131330201","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We address negative refractions of acoustic wave both experimentally and theoretically in two dimensional sonic crystals constructed with steel rods embedded in air. With lattice symmetry and artificial ldquoatomsrdquo designing, refraction of acoustic wave in the crystals could be manipulated from positive to negative and from defocusing to focusing with sonic crystal plates. Analogous to enhanced transmission of optical wave, enhanced acoustic wave transmission through narrow slit smaller than wavelength has been established as well, which is modeled as the coupling of surface waves and cavity mode in the slits. These abnormal behaviors show that sonic crystal is emerging as a kind of acoustic metamaterials.","PeriodicalId":345360,"journal":{"name":"2008 International Workshop on Metamaterials","volume":"436 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132471189","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
