For three holiday destinations in Germany, passive mobile data and passive global positioning systems (GPS) data are compared with reference data from the destinations for twelve weeks in the summer of 2019. Results show that mobile network data are on a plausible level compared to the local reference data and are able to predict the temporal pattern to a very high degree. This has prompted vast developments in theoretical models by academics and indicators by peak bodies to explore the pathways. One limitation to the pathways is the lack of emission data. This research presents a framework integrating the principles of TSA with the National Greenhouse Accounts. Tourism emissions are estimated and examined by destinations, producing industries and visitor types. The framework is applied to destinations in the State of Queensland, Australia, to illustrate the types of results and insights that can be produced for decision-makers. We show that this shift led to negative environmental impacts that we characterize in this paper for Canadian destinations. Based on a review of Canadian media content published during the pandemic, a total of 194 articles were identified, 22 of which reported 83 negative environmental impacts for 19 destinations. We obtain three main results. First, beach tourism was the source of most of the negative environmental impacts (78,9%). Second, the most common problems were associated with car use (36.1%) and waste disposal (36.1%). Third, 26.5% of the problems were caused by waste thrown into the environment. This has often been attributed to inter-generational differences such as increased cultural diversity, interest in other forms of entertainment and lack of free time. The research employs the hierarchical model of leisure constraints to define interpersonal, intrapersonal, and structural barriers to the visitation of national parks. The findings of 26 in-depth qualitative interviews suggest complex relationships with natural environments. It was established that second-generation Australians were less likely to engage with national parks during childhood. However, COVID-19 has devastated the tourism industry in numerous national economies. This study conducts a systematic literature review on tourism economic impact between 1975 and 2020, analyzing the general bibliometrics and examining the key themes and methods of assessing tourism economic impact.
