As a consequence nonlinear distortion are introduced by the radio frequency (RF) components, such as amplitude clipping due to the low noise amplifier (LNA) in low cost receivers. This can significantly affect the symbol error rate (SER) performance of such systems. In this article we propose a method to efficiently estimate the SER performance of OFDM receivers in an industrial test environment, where the transmitter is considered ideal and neither fading nor significant noise are observed. To this end importance sampling (IS) techniques are employed. The application of the proposed method shortens the simulation/measurement time up to three orders of magnitude compared to the time needed by intensive Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. We propose three new high-rate coordinate interleaved STBCs and prove that they can achieve full-diversity with linear receivers for any optimally rotated square QAM constellation. Recently, Shang and Xia proved that the symbol rate of an STBC achieving full-diversity with a linear receiver is upper bounded by one complex information symbol per channel use (pcu). However, we show that with the use of coordinate interleaving, the proposed STBCs can exceed this upper bound to 4/3 complex information symbols pcu for two, three and four transmit antennas. For the symbol-by-symbol decoding of the proposed STBCs, we adapt the partial interference cancellation (PIC) group decoding algorithm recently proposed by Guo and Xia, and then further modify this decoder by applying successive interference cancellation (SIC) operation. We consider computationally efficient synchronization algorithms, which are applicable also without full knowledge of the properties of the transmitted signal at the receiver. Although the proposed algorithms are considered for a mobile WiMAX system, their application is not limited to the specific WiMAX signal structure. Indeed, they can be used on any OFDM system with certain type of training sequence. Approaches are considered both for time and for frequency-domain synchronization. In the time-domain case, the proposed algorithm improves the accuracy of a previously studied coarse synchronization approach without significant increase in computational complexity. Based on the DVB-T standard, the DVB-H itself supports high data rate IP datacasting (IPDC) in dispersive broadcasting channels and enables low power consumption of portable mobile terminals (MTs) running in a robust mode. The error protection of the DVB-H link layer is based on a Reed-Solomon forward error correction coding scheme combined with an IP packet level cyclic redundancy check scheme. Targeted primarily at the digital video broadcasting error protection, however, the redundancy allowed in the DVB-H standard is not sufficient for the WBC service advertisements datacasting. To achieve reliable broadcasting in WBC, a smart cross-layer algorithm that interacts with the service layer's advertisements delivery protocol is proposed in this paper. In an environment where the majority of users access next generation networks using battery-powered devices, energy efficiency is of equal importance to other well-established metrics of overall system and protocol performance. Nevertheless, we still lack benchmarks of what constitutes energy efficient operation in mobile computing and networking. In particular, models that accurately quantify transport protocol energy consumption are in short supply. This paper introduces a blueprint for a configurable and extensible energy consumption model which takes battery depletion and recovery characteristics into consideration. We show that the non-linear nature of battery depletion cannot be ignored in energy consumption evaluation studies. Battery recovery effects should be accounted for as well. We assume real-time multimedia stream communications between a fixed server and mobile nodes. In particular, through simulation we investigate the performance of the BATMAN protocol and compare it against that of some of the most representative schemes for routing in ad hoc and mesh networks. We find that BATMAN performs well for uplink traffic transfers (from the mobile to the fixed server), but yields poor results in presence of downlink traffic. We therefore analyze the protocol behavior and solve its shortcomings by proposing a modified version of the scheme named smart window (sw-) BATMAN. It may be implemented without physical compromise of any existing node, and poses problems in terms of reliable detection, as the resulting network properties may be difficult to distinguish from genuine routing improvements via new connectivity. However, as a wormhole attempts to encourage route formation in its vicinity, under network load an active wormhole will generate significant congestion around its endpoints. This paper proposes a novel routing approach which attempts to detect situations which may produce the poor performance characteristic of an ongoing wormhole attack, by making nodes take account of disturbance (the impact of a forwarding commitment on their peers), and diversify routes to attempt to find a wormhole-free path and reduce the influence of the attacker. NC was initially proposed in the context of multicast in wired networks where it was proven to achieve the maximum multicast capacity. However, the operation of NC in wireless networks with multiple unicast transmissions and its impact on the different layers has not been fully understood. Problems addressed are a simple calculation of the inverse autocorrelation matrix and schemes of training data or pilot symbols. While there is much work spend in evaluating pilot performances, the choice of pilot symbols cannot be decided based only on simulations. Three proposed schemes are discussed regarding off-the-shelf RF components' compatibility of an experimental MIMO system where polyphase pilots fail to yield good results. The aim is to extend and evaluate, co-located precoding schemes that have been recently proposed, in a distributed scenario. Assuming knowledge of CSI prior to transmission, we can remove the interference among users by employing precoding schemes for the downlink. We assessed closed form and iterative schemes based on block diagonalization (BD) to improve the performance of the distributed antenna system. The results show that the iterative scheme outperforms the closed one.
