However, many mainstream world-building applications do not offer quick and appropriate ways of developing interactive and user-driven content that can be easily shared with other users. Many education-orientated applications also require built-in tracking and evaluation mechanisms. Evaluation of virtual worlds and communities is difficult enough as it is. While commercial game engines offer a form of task performance tracking, they typically lack non-violent ways of supporting interaction and collaborative teamwork. The chance to help students and the public to learn by creating and collaborating through the development of contextually relevant worlds is exciting. It is perhaps best served by an application containing a feature set designed specifically for content designers to create learning environments. In this paper we suggest some features that might help educational designers build better 'learning as sharing' experiences.","PeriodicalId":343909,"journal":{"name":"Third International Conference on Creating, Connecting and Collaborating through Computing (C5'05)","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-01-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126067077","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We are developing an architecture that incorporates the ideas of filters and controls for 3D to solve this problem. Our model uses the Croquet 2D portals as view filters that can modify the nature of the content displayed on the other side of the filter. Another problem is that this collaborative sharing of interfaces tends to be complex. A new approach to this, an extension of the model-view-controller approach pioneered in Smalltalk is described. This extension of MVC to collaborative 3D user interface design consists of interactors, tasks, and replicants. This architecture solves the collaboration UI problem in a way that makes it quite easy for the designer to create robust multi-user applications without having to manage the divergent states and goals of each user. The programmer can focus on the design of an extensible system as if he is dealing with a single user.","PeriodicalId":343909,"journal":{"name":"Third International Conference on Creating, Connecting and Collaborating through Computing (C5'05)","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-01-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128593778","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The omni-directional display system enables many users to watch 3D images from each viewpoint without wearing special devices. Therefore, we consider that the omni-directional display is an effective 3D displaying method in the environment of group learning. In our system, we reconstruct 3D shapes of objects from images which are captured by multi-viewpoint cameras. Next, we transmit reconstructed data to remote places and display on the omni-directional display. We realize a series of these process in real-time. Moreover, we implemented a PDA-based control user interface for the omni-directional display system, and realized the control freely from any positions around the display.","PeriodicalId":343909,"journal":{"name":"Third International Conference on Creating, Connecting and Collaborating through Computing (C5'05)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-01-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114609986","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In our algorithm, every node uses Delaunay triangulation, by using its knowledge of other nodes and cooperatively exchanging information among nodes, which generates and refines overlaid networks. On the resultant Delaunay network, nodes communicate with each other over virtual collaborative space, and employ multihopping communication among distant nodes. This algorithm structure has the following advantages: (1) utilization of only the localized nodes, omitting the use of unnecessary distant nodes for communication, (2) scalability through surveillance of nodes by refining and updating the network continuously, (3) two dimensional space organization which allows construction of super nodes that govern regional areas to process geographical range query, and (4) directional communication through a small routing table. The authors believe that this approach is applicable to large-scale virtual collaborative space and location aware system.","PeriodicalId":343909,"journal":{"name":"Third International Conference on Creating, Connecting and Collaborating through Computing (C5'05)","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-01-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126732127","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Following a user-centric approach, the initial version of the system is designed as an interviewing tool to gather user feedback that would guide further UI development. To facilitate review of user interviews, we have implemented a history mechanism that works with arbitrarily nested 'worlds'. The history of the entire complex of worlds can be traversed, or sub-worlds can be traversed individually, or even be embedded in completely different worlds. We describe a novel approach to fitting, storing, and rendering strokes drawn by the user, which is designed for low storage overhead and efficient traversal by our history mechanism, and which supports expressively animated rendering styles using GPU shaders.","PeriodicalId":343909,"journal":{"name":"Third International Conference on Creating, Connecting and Collaborating through Computing (C5'05)","volume":"206 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-01-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115797322","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The first primary motivation of the curriculum was designed for learning way of media-art, but now the goal is more comprehensive for leading generic computer literacy. Through the workshop, students could learn not only how to use computer software, but also how to make software for works along with own independent needs. Meta-toys workshop introduces the way of thinking about how to use computer effectively with making presentation tools. In addition to show the workshop, we describe necessary software features for the workshop.","PeriodicalId":343909,"journal":{"name":"Third International Conference on Creating, Connecting and Collaborating through Computing (C5'05)","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-01-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116133174","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It first describes the features and rationale behind problem-based learning approach, and then introduces the development of Web-based environment as well as its implementation of a university classroom in facilitating students' team-working. It then discusses results of the evaluation conducted to understand the effectiveness of this technology application. Findings show that most students have positive attitude toward this application, and they think the system can help their team-working in the problem-based learning process. Also students' feedbacks demonstrate that their learning from the Web-based problem-based learning approach is significantly improved.","PeriodicalId":343909,"journal":{"name":"Third International Conference on Creating, Connecting and Collaborating through Computing (C5'05)","volume":"616 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-01-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124559530","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By comparing the campus to a collaborative \"information space\" where we are free to roam and \"interoperate\" at will, we underscore the role that proprietary restrictions - operating systems, applications, and formats - have played in making online learning a remote, cramped, and emotionally \"flat\" experience. From there, we examine the technical hurdles that must be overcome before our online learning experiences can approximate the vitality of campus-based, socially contextualized education.","PeriodicalId":343909,"journal":{"name":"Third International Conference on Creating, Connecting and Collaborating through Computing (C5'05)","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-01-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130029133","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
