This paper studies the period of 1987-2013 and shows that: (1) the FED responded to oil price inflation, (2) expansionary monetary policy fueled the surge in oil price only when it was accompanied by a depreciation of the US dollar and (3) the drop in the dollar's value increased oil prices only when fed funds rates were decreased.","PeriodicalId":343908,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Mediterranean Gas and Oil Conference (MedGO)","volume":"86 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133771085","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents a cost optimum solution to small leaks in pipelines through the use of an array of piezoelectric film sensors embedded in a mobile robot. It's common in the industry to use an automatic system, which is installed at all joints along the pipeline, to detect a large leak and send its location wirelessly to the main controller. From time to time, the new robot is passed through the pipeline to detect small leakage precisely before detrimental corrosion and then major failure occurs.","PeriodicalId":343908,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Mediterranean Gas and Oil Conference (MedGO)","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114207443","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As the oil and gas industry is perceived to be closed and conservative, this makes the software ecosystems in the industry unique and the main motivation for this paper. The literature currently available on software ecosystems does not cover the oil and gas exploration & production (E&P) industry and there has been limited research in this field. This paper investigates the most critical factors that make a software ecosystem successful in the E&P industry. The research was conducted on software ecosystems in the E&P industry. The sample of the research consisted of the platform providers, third-party developers and E&P companies. Through a literature review, a comprehensive software ecosystem strategy assessment model was identified and the factors from that model were evaluated. These factors are analyzed and discussed in the paper and presented from the perspective of various players of the ecosystem. Based on the results from the interviews, discussions and data analysis, a new Critical Success Factors model is designed. This model identifies the influencing factors (that affect the critical success factors) and the resulting factors (that exist because of the critical success factors).","PeriodicalId":343908,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Mediterranean Gas and Oil Conference (MedGO)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129248472","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, significant uncertainty has resulted in stakeholders adopting a wait-and-see approach in decision-making and investment in the hydrocarbon sector. This paper aims to address this uncertainty by providing a structured framework to determine the conditions that make various export options under consideration feasible and attractive. Our analysis particularly focuses on the LNG option that Lebanon could use to ship its gas to market. This option is broad and the alternatives range from building an LNG liquefaction plant in Lebanon, deploying floating LNG vessel, leasing an existing underutilized LNG plant, to a brownfield expansion of an existing LNG facility in Egypt.","PeriodicalId":343908,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Mediterranean Gas and Oil Conference (MedGO)","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130812027","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The economic importance of offshore pipelines has increased in recent years with the development of oil and gas transportation systems. Hydrocarbons are transported in the pipelines at high temperature and pressure in order to facilitate the flow of oil and to prevent its “solidification”. However, these high temperatures and pressures may force the pipeline to buckle either in the horizontal (lateral) or in the vertical direction (upheaval). The latter buckling mode may lead to pipeline failure which could cause massive oil leakage and severe environmental damages. Several experimental studies have investigated the uplift resistance of buried pipelines with different soil cover depths, while other studies have proposed analytical and empirical methods that aim at predicting the response of a pipeline that is subjected to upheaval. The objective of this paper is to investigate the effectiveness of some of these methods by assembling a database of published model tests conducted on pipelines that were subjected to uplift. By comparing measured and predicted uplift forces, a quantification of the model uncertainty could be accomplished. A reliability analysis was then conducted to quantify the probability of failure and reliability index for pipelines designed using different factors of safety and cover heights.","PeriodicalId":343908,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Mediterranean Gas and Oil Conference (MedGO)","volume":"155 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131880181","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Experiments were carried out on a medium crude oil (API gravity of 29.6, and 1.97% by weight sulfur content) at room temperature. Emulsion samples were prepared using fresh and salt water (3.8% NaCl w/v). The water concentration ranged from 5% to 60% by volume. Tests revealed that water-in-crude oil emulsions showed a shear thickening non-Newtonian behavior. Emulsions prepared using fresh water showed an increase in the emulsion viscosity as water concentration increased until phase inversion occurred, after which the viscosity dropped and then leveled out. However, for emulsions prepared using salt water, viscosity continued to increase beyond the phase inversion point with the increase in water concentration. For the same water concentration, fresh water emulsions had lower viscosity than salt water emulsions and were able to take up to 30% water, while salt water emulsions were able to take up to 15% water only. The emulsions, classified as meso-stable, showed a viscosity increase of less than one order of magnitude greater than that of the starting oil. Water salinity caused a slight increase in the non-Newtonian behavior of the oil emulsions.","PeriodicalId":343908,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Mediterranean Gas and Oil Conference (MedGO)","volume":"142 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134099184","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since most of the reservoirs contain hydrocarbons that are either very deep into the formation or are covered with very troublesome formations, sidetracking would be necessary to reach these areas. Using Extended Reach Drilling in the correct way would be more economical to companies since they can replace the need to drill several vertical wells. To build an extended reach well, some designs related to the drill string, casing and hydraulics should be considered. However, Extended Reach Drilling is not a simple method since many parameters can influence the success of the operation such as the hole condition, Equivalent Circulating Density, Torque and Drag trends. Main factors affecting the Drag trends are analyzed.","PeriodicalId":343908,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Mediterranean Gas and Oil Conference (MedGO)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114404626","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The investigation was achieved by conducting a parametric study using three-dimensional elastic-plastic finite element analysis (FEA). Several standard pipe sizes (NPS-4 to 14) with various wall thinning depth ratios (up to 75% of the wall thickness) have been considered. The localized wall thinning was assumed to be uniform. Based on the results, it was shown that the elastic-plastic FEA can be used to accurately estimate the “failure pressure” and assess the remaining strength of the pipe. In addition, the API 579 Fitness-For-Service assessment limiting pressure analysis has been considered as a basis to propose an API-modified simple way of assessing the integrity of pressurized locally thinned standard straight pipes.","PeriodicalId":343908,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Mediterranean Gas and Oil Conference (MedGO)","volume":"150 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131591915","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This soil-structure interaction simulation predicts the potential impact of structural health monitoring on the cement casing structures found in oil well. Nonlinear plane stain analysis using staged techniques is presented. Results including the deflection of cement casing tip, strain, moment and direct stress in the cement casing are affected by live and dead weight around well vicinity. The prediction of internal stresses and strains in cement casing is presented under static conditions. However, the effects of aging, deterioration and extreme seismic loading necessitate the need for advanced structural health monitoring and damage detection sensors.","PeriodicalId":343908,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Mediterranean Gas and Oil Conference (MedGO)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115286334","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
