These insulators were evaluated in a fog chamber. The results showed that the insulator profile has a strong effect on the performance of the insulator under very heavy pollution and humidity conditions. Insulators having a simple profile electrically failed under light pollution conditions. While, insulators having a complex profile did not fail under very heavy pollution conditions. The results obtained for each insulator evaluated are presented in This work.","PeriodicalId":342687,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the 2004 IEEE International Symposium on Electrical Insulation","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-09-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117350309","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A new land of split-core PD sensor is designed that can be easy installed on-site and used safely, and has a bandwidth from 3 MHz to 60 MHz. A model of a cable accessory was made and some typical PD phenomena in this accessory were simulated, such as sliding discharge, floating discharge and cavity discharge. PD tests were made to find the features of the defects. The data from the tests were analyzed and the spectra of different types of PD were plotted using statistical parameters to reveal the feature of the different patterns of PD. The split-core PD sensor has been used on-site after sample testing in the laboratory. More than twenty cases of on-line PD detection for 110 kV XLPE cables have been obtained.","PeriodicalId":342687,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the 2004 IEEE International Symposium on Electrical Insulation","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-09-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116892011","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A proposed solution to this problem by employing a resistive silicone rubber coating on composite HV bushings was investigated. Good agreement was obtained between computer software simulation by FEMLAB/spl reg/ and measurement results of potential and field distributions. Wetting and salt-fog chamber tests verified that the resistive silicone rubber coated composite bushings have superior contamination performance.","PeriodicalId":342687,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the 2004 IEEE International Symposium on Electrical Insulation","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-09-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114164681","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

DWT as a powerful mathematical tool has proven its effectiveness in PD measurement denoising. The paper presents a method on how to achieve an improved denoising effect at an optimal sampling rate in DWT. It reveals the relationship between the sampling rate and the frequency band in wavelet analysis and contrasts the distribution of a PD signal and white noise along the decomposition levels. A set of 3 PD pulses produced by a narrow band detector immersed in white noise are processed at different sampling rates to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.","PeriodicalId":342687,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the 2004 IEEE International Symposium on Electrical Insulation","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-09-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114766537","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The benefits of reduced ohmic losses leading to greater operational efficiency appear attractive to power transmission and distribution companies. Potentially this technology will increase power transfer for the same or lower voltage and for the same or smaller physical dimensions. For the successful employment of this technology in the field, power utilities must be convinced of the operational reliability of designs. Many of these designs make use of liquid nitrogen as the system coolant and also as a dielectric fluid. It is therefore vital that liquid nitrogen be well characterised as a dielectric medium. This work describes an experiment to characterise partial discharge behaviour in a nonuniform field geometry. A technique is described which allows synchronised capture and measurement of apparent charge and images of density change streamer activity. A /spl phi/qn analysis of AC results has been completed and characterisation of partial discharge behaviour is presented and discussed.","PeriodicalId":342687,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the 2004 IEEE International Symposium on Electrical Insulation","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-09-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115340402","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In North America, a large proportion of them are approaching their end of design life and in need of replacement or refurbishment A program has been developed to assist engineers to diagnose and assess the health of power transformers. The program uses test and inspection data and equipment information such as nameplate, known design problems, operating history, and age to determine the equipment's health rating. The program calculates condition indexes of transformer components then combines them into an equipment health rating. Although the program automatically calculates such values, it also allows for experts to provide diagnostics and make recommendation on intervention, and to review all the final rating . The results can be used to quickly assess equipment health and provide comparison within a substation or the entire utility for asset management. Examples and case histories are used to show the merits and applications of the program for BC Hydro's system.","PeriodicalId":342687,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the 2004 IEEE International Symposium on Electrical Insulation","volume":"159 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-09-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115578613","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

PD measurements were carried out on three-phase motors with open-star windings and different configurations, e.g., one phase supplied while the other two were grounded, two phases connected in series, grounding the motor frame. The voltage waveforms generated by a power supply and applied to motor windings was recorded at the winding terminals, for each test configuration. These measurements allowed to highlight winding positions where insulation can be overstressed by uneven voltage distribution, as occurs on motors in service. By comparing partial discharge measurement patterns along windings and under different test configurations, a qualitative evaluation of the location of partial discharge sources inside the tested motors was carried out.","PeriodicalId":342687,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the 2004 IEEE International Symposium on Electrical Insulation","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-09-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125268874","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
