Professional societies hold an important place in the history of science and engineering. They serve as the “watering holes” where professionals from the same discipline may gather and discuss the vagaries of their body of knowledge, while sharing important discoveries with their colleagues. In the traditions of SDPS, all disciplines are welcome—to not only share their work and research methods but also to join others in examining the very nature of knowledge itself and to seek ways to integrate it across disciplinary boundaries. With this brief history, we can only present a cursory tale of the incredible circumstances that led to what was once called, “The Society of the Future.” We welcome readers of this, our 25th anniversary of the Journal of Integrated Design and Process Science. It was a long and almost unbelievable journey, but through it all, it would appear the Future has at last arrived.","PeriodicalId":342559,"journal":{"name":"J. Integr. Des. Process. Designing next-generation cyber-physical systems (NG-CPSs) is a challenging matter for abundant reasons. It is not possible to consider all reasons and to address their interplays simultaneously in one paper. Therefore, this position paper elaborates only on a selected number of topical issues and influential factors. The author claims that the shift of the paradigm of CPSs and the uncertainty related to the paradigmatic systems features of NG-CPSs are among the primary reasons. Since the future of CPSs will be influenced strongly by their intellectualization, adaptation/evolution, and automation, these aspects are also addressed. It is argued that interaction and cooperation with NG-CPSs should be seen from a multi-dimensional perspective and that socialization of NG-CPSs needs more attention in research. The need for aggregation, management, and exploitation of the growing amount of synthetic systems knowledge produced by smart CPSs is seen by the author as an important emerging concern.","PeriodicalId":342559,"journal":{"name":"J. To address these concerns, the key challenges for educating and training the current and future workforce should be identified and the specific activities leading to the design of new manufacturing career pathways should be defined. Thus, the objective of this article is to define and prioritize the necessary activities and short- to long-term outcomes that will aid in developing high-skill career pathways that will positively impact children and families, students and teachers, and future workers. Expert perspectives from industry and academia have been analysed through two lenses: education (primary/secondary, technical, and university levels) and policy/innovation. The nominal group technique (NGT) is applied in this research to capture these perspectives, which enabled the generation of ideas followed by discussion and ranking by the experts. This approach encourages participation and avoids the associated drawbacks of typical group interactions. As a result, prioritized activities, short-term outcomes, and policy ideas to introduce children and families, students and teachers, and future workers to careers in advanced manufacturing are presented for each lens of focus. In addition, inputs from experts were captured to discuss desired medium- to long-term outcomes. In conclusion, this article summarizes the key findings from the study.","PeriodicalId":342559,"journal":{"name":"J. Integr. Des. Process. This study also examined the effects of both variables on adaptability, creativity, and motivation; consequently, contribute to learning effectiveness. Overall, 483 undergraduates from a university in Taiwan participated in the survey. Findings evinced that the learning environment and course experience had significant positive influences on learning effectiveness. The relationship between the learning environment and learning effectiveness was partially mediated by adaptability; while creativity partially mediated the adaptability and learning effectiveness relationship. Furthermore, motivation was found to be partially mediated the course experience and learning effectiveness relationship; while, creativity partially mediated the motivation and learning effectiveness relationship. Results suggested that non-traditional classroom seating was promoting adaptability, creativity, and learning effectiveness of students. A good course experience can motivate students, promote creativity, and learning effectiveness.","PeriodicalId":342559,"journal":{"name":"J. Integr. Des. Process. The results showed that GA provided a better solution than PSO in terms of the total travelled distance, while PSO yielded faster. The layout optimization was applied in the case of eight facilities. The seventh paper is entitled “Preliminary Study of End-Effector Compliance for Reducing Insertion Force in Automated Fluid Coupling for Trains”. It presents the work and results of Kourosh Eshraghi, Jiang, Daniele Suraci, and Mark Atherton. In my reading, inventiveness originated here in matching practical experiments and rational considerations. The authors started out from the observation that the literature does not propose dedicated solutions for handling large misalignments of the passive end-effector in such applications as a robot end-effector for train fluid servicing. The end-effector compliance was supposed to be the key to a successful alignment. The authors applied a hybrid approach (combining physical experiments and numerical modeling/simulations) to investigate the magnitude of the insertion forces during misaligned couplings. The conducted physical experiments showed that large insertion forces might be required even in the case of small misalignments. A kind of digital twin was formed by the physical set up and the simulation model. The latter captured the configurable parameters for robot compliance and peg-in-hole friction, and was informed by the results of the physical experiments. The numerical simulation model was calibrated based on the results of the physical experiments. It was shown that the characteristic insertion force curve obtained with the calibrated simulation model was a truthful representative of what could be measured in the physical experiments. Thus, it can reduce the physical efforts and labor that is needed for the testing of end-effectors. However, the testing of the calibrated simulation model for other robot and misalignment configurations showed greater error, suggesting that the model can be used only for the calibrated configuration.","PeriodicalId":342559,"journal":{"name":"J. The mismatch of intended and actual building performance can be attributed to multifarious reasons. This study focuses on the role of project decisions made during design as one of the reasons of shortfall. The aim of the study is to unveil the design decision-making process of a state-of-the-art research building through the analysis of project’s available set of IDP (Integrated Design Process) documentation. To understand the relationship and correlation between the energy performance gap and the decision-making process of the case building, we investigated the design decisions’ effect on the actual performance. The particular emphasis is on the decisions that were based on assumptions rather than measured actual test data for the proposed innovative building systems. The designed heat recovery system, which was dependent on recovered heat from the neighboring research building, had a significant effect on the building’s poor energy performance. We investigated collected project data from coordination meetings, thoroughly analyzed project documentation, and quantified the building’s actual energy performance data. The analysis of the project information shows the ripple effect of decisions that were made based on assumptions, that triggered shortfalls in the building’s overall actual performance. Our qualitative analysis indicates that the poor system performance during operations was related with the design decisions that were not based on the measurement of the actual performance of the existing systems in the neighboring building. The performance of the heat recovery from the neighboring building as a highly dependent Energy Conservation Measure (ECM) analyzed through collected documents and data. The ambiguity of the available heat potential from the neighboring building and related testing issues defined on an explanatory timeline of process coding. The conclusion includes recommendations for the design decision-making process for innovative system integrations for high-performance buildings, and underlines the importance of IDP for complex buildings.","PeriodicalId":342559,"journal":{"name":"J. Our course redesign process includes identifying conflicts, generating solutions, self-evaluation, and analyses of design solutions. We carefully balanced between Workload and students’ Affect, by designing comparable workloads as before, as well as maintaining students’ motivation similarly at the in-person level. Transforming this course consisting of lecture sessions and lab sessions with hardware and software elements yielded a set of course activities and teaching practices applicable to online teaching of other courses. When physical robots become unavailable, simulation projects were designed as alternatives and simulated versions of those physical projects used in face-to-face classroom. These simulation projects are in the areas of autonomous mobile robots, robotic manipulator, and advanced robotic control on MATLAB-ROS, respectively. Comparisons with past in-person results confirm that effective learning has been achieved remotely, having maintained student’s performance and motivation.","PeriodicalId":342559,"journal":{"name":"J. Anda, Daniel Amyot","doi":"10.3233/jid-210022","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.3233/jid-210022","url":null,"abstract":"Socio-cyber-physical systems (SCPSs) are cyber-physical systems with social concerns. Many emerging SCPSs, often qualified as “smart”, need such concerns to be addressed not only at design time but also at runtime, often by adapting dynamically to surrounding contexts, to keep providing optimal value to users. A comprehensive requirements and design modeling approach is needed to incorporate social concerns (e.g., using goal modeling) into SCPS development activities. This paper introduces an optimization method that provides design-time and runtime solutions for self-adaptive SCPSs while supporting the validation of their design models. The method helps satisfying the goals of the SCPS and its stakeholders by monitoring the system’s environment and qualities, while enforcing correctness constraints specified in a feature model. We integrate arithmetic functions generated automatically from goal and feature models to build a combined goal-feature model and synchronize the values of the features shared between i) the objective function represented by goal functions, and ii) the constraints represented by feature functions. The goal-feature model is solved by an optimization tool (IBM CPLEX) in order to calculate optimal adaptation solutions for common situations at design time. Runtime optimization is also used by the system for adapting to situations unanticipated during design. We use a Smart Home Management System case study to assess how well the method can be used to manage selection among alternatives according to monitored environmental conditions while solving emergent conflicts. Further experiments on the use of the method for runtime adaptation show good performance for realistic models and good scalability overall. Some remaining challenges and limitations exist, including the availability of quantitative models as inputs.","PeriodicalId":342559,"journal":{"name":"J. Integr. Des. Process.
