It is established experimentally that the viscosity of the liquids studied is not the same throughout the thickness of the boundary later.PMS applied to glass and steel substrates retain their bulk viscosity values down to a layer thickness of ca. 150–200 A, below which the viscosity increases slightly. On further decrease of the distance to 10–15 A from the substrate, the viscosity becomes anomalously low, amounting to about 10–20 % of the bulk value. The existence of a layer of anomalously low viscosity may be attributed to orientation of the PMS molecules in the plane of the substrate, and hence, to the ease with which these oriented layers slip relative to one another.When studying the boundary viscosity of binary mixtures of PMS of different molecular weights, boundary phases of elevated viscosity were found to exist at a distance of 15–30 A from the substrate. This phenomenon may be attributed to a change in concentration of the mixture at the solid surface i.e., to an increase in content of the component with the higher molecular weight in the wall-adjacent layer.","PeriodicalId":341426,"journal":{"name":"Special Discussions of The Faraday Society","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123916195","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A theory is developed for polarization of the diffuse part of a thin DL of a spherical particle in a direct and alternating field, allowing for the effect of ion flow through the stagnant part of the DL. Formulae are obtained on the basis of this theory for electrophoresis complicated by polarization and for the large low-frequency dielectric dispersion (ω). Calculation of the stagnant layer thickness and the ionic mobilities of this layer is shown to be possible on the basis of electrophoretic measurement on three fractions of spherical particles with identical values of ψd and ζ. Using only one fraction, we can obtain similar information from the low-frequency section of (ω).","PeriodicalId":341426,"journal":{"name":"Special Discussions of The Faraday Society","volume":"75 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116089823","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These variables produced information about the forces of interaction between the droplets. The concentration of the surface-active agent was increased to determine the effects of surface concentration upon the above forces, for small and wide particle spacings with reference to the thickness of the adsorbed layers. All experiments proved that by stepping up the concentration of the surface active agent the attraction between the particles was increased and, consequently the stability reduced.","PeriodicalId":341426,"journal":{"name":"Special Discussions of The Faraday Society","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129380546","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Heats of immersion at various stages of hydration were measured at 25°C. According to X-ray observations during the sorption process, two discrete interlayer hydrates are obtained with one and two monolayers of water between the unit layers of the crystallites. The derived integral entropy of adsorption indicates a reduced freedom of motion of the interlayer water molecules compared with that for water molecules in the liquid state. Comparison of the apparent density of the hydrated clay with the calculated crystallographic density indicates that interlayer water is slightly more densily packed than liquid water. However, the bulk density of water in a sodium vermiculite suspension is normal for the water in excess of the two hydration layers.Nuclear pulse resonance results obtained on sodium vermiculite shows that water in the one-layer hydrate is organized and some hypotheses are presented regarding this organization. Water molecules in the two-layer complex show the same degree of orientation only below –65°C. Infra-red absorption spectra for hydrated flakes of sodium vermiculite were obtained as a function of angle between the (001) plane of the crystallites and the i.-r. beam. The results indicate orientation of water molecules in the one-layer hydrate at room temperature.","PeriodicalId":341426,"journal":{"name":"Special Discussions of The Faraday Society","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128843952","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The viscosity of water, benzene, and carbon tetrachloride was measured in quartz capillaries of radius r= 0.5–0.04 µm. The viscosity of water in such capillaries is elevated (by 40 % in capillaries 0.04 µm radius), but the viscosity of non-polar CCl4 and benzene remains normal. The temperature dependence of the increased viscosity of water is studied; the viscosity becomes normal at t= 60–70°C When water is drawn into a capillary with “dry” walls, the wetting angle differs from zero. In these cases the contact angle is not constant, but depends on the rate of entry of the water.","PeriodicalId":341426,"journal":{"name":"Special Discussions of The Faraday Society","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114275458","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The thicknesses of the hydrocarbon cores of the films were estimated from electrical capacitance measurements and the compositions from interfacial tension data. The thicknesses and the compositions were found to be interrelated in a simple way and were markedly dependent on the chain length of the hydrocarbon solvent.An electrical potential applied across a liquid film subjects it to a large compressive force under which most types of film became significantly thinner. From thickness measurements in applied fields the strengths of the steric interactions which stabilize the films were calculated. From a knowledge of the steric interaction, together with an estimate of the London-van der Waals forces from contact angle measurements, the curve of potential energy against film thickness has been calculated for one system. The magnitude of the steric interaction at a given film thickness varies considerably for films of different solvent content. As a consequence, a general picture of the time-average conformations of the hydrocarbon chains of glyceryl mono-oleate in the black films and at different hydrocarbon/water interfaces may be deduced.","PeriodicalId":341426,"journal":{"name":"Special Discussions of The Faraday Society","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114589028","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Experiments on hydrated lithium vermiculite give information in three regions. At energy transfers between 200 and 800 cm–1, vibrational bands associated with hydrogen motions in the silicate lattice and in the water are distinguished. In the low-frequency region, ca. 15–150 cm–1, a broad band of scattering characteristic of water emerges as the water content of the clay increases. Line-broadening effects arising from small energy transfers are indicative of diffusional processes in the water layers, but improved technique is required to make this certain for the thinnest films. The data are analyzed with particular reference to the thickness of the interlamellar water layers, and indicate significant changes in the water structure for water thicknesses of ca. 1–2 molecular layers. Similar results obtain in experiments with sodium vermiculite, and with lithium and sodium montmorillonite.","PeriodicalId":341426,"journal":{"name":"Special Discussions of The Faraday Society","volume":"114 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123334159","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In part 1 the build-up of thin films on high-energy surfaces from the first monolayer is considered and reviewed. Components of the surface free energy of formation of the thin film (disjoining pressure) are defined. For curved surfaces the disjoining forces should be combined with the Laplace capillary pressure to give a correct form of the Kelvin equation. It is suggested from the early work of Bangham and Deryaguin that thin liquid layers have anomalous physical properties. These studies are discussed in relation to the thickness of the liquid films.In part 2, new experimental evidence of the critical rupture thickness of thin liquid films on low energy surface is presented. A number of pure liquids rupture spontaneously on low energy surfaces such as wax or polytetrafluoroethylene at very great thicknesses (0.01 cm). The effects of aqueous salt and surfactant solutions suggest these long-range forces are electrical in origin.","PeriodicalId":341426,"journal":{"name":"Special Discussions of The Faraday Society","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129920824","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
