No knowledge of the spreading codes used by the primary CDMA network is available to the cooperative secondary users a priori, other than the spreading factor. An evolutionary algorithm of relatively low complexity order is proposed based on Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) for assigning spreading codes to secondary users such that the mutual interference between existing secondary and primary users is minimized. This is accomplished at the secondary fusion center by minimizing the mean square cross-correlation between the candidate codes and the matrix which includes all independently received signals by the cooperative secondary users. Simulation results show that performance of the ACO-based method can converge to the optimal interference minimizing code assignment method while the complexity order is significantly reduced.","PeriodicalId":339596,"journal":{"name":"34th IEEE Sarnoff Symposium","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127678584","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Tuple search (TS) sphere detection was recently introduced, demonstrating to represent a promising approach in this context. It provides significant complexity reduction in comparison to conventional algorithms, providing in addition close to full max-log-APP BER performance. Due to the increasing multiplicity of communication standards as well as variety of mobile applications demanded by users, tackling the lack of flexibility of common receiver realizations has become an additional key challenge in MIMO detection. Aim of this work is to demonstrate that the benefit provided by the tuple search strategy is still present in a wide range of possible transmission schemes. For this purpose, a novel efficiency indicator is introduced, based on which an exhaustive analysis is performed. The existing tuple search detector has been adapted to deal with different constellation orders and transmit/receive antenna configurations. In addition, the applied MMSE strategy has been modified to support undetermined systems. The obtained results show the superiority of the proposed sphere detector under different transmission conditions, thus demonstrating its efficiency and flexibility.","PeriodicalId":339596,"journal":{"name":"34th IEEE Sarnoff Symposium","volume":"236 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121141966","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Furthermore, it is important to assess energy efficiency improvements from an operator's point of view, since energy costs are increasing and providing ubiquitous high speed mobile access may scale up the operators' operational expenditure. One of two promising approaches to enhance a network's operation regarding energy efficiency is to utilize smaller micro cells within one large macro cell. Another approach is to regard macro base stations as coverage providers for areas in between micro cells, while reducing their maximum transmit powers to a minimum. In this paper we investigate on the energy efficiency of a heterogeneous OFDM-based mobile network in the downlink taking into account the co-channel interference based on varying traffic demand per area. Furthermore, we carry out an assessment of potential energy savings of the two approaches mentioned above. For a sufficiently large traffic demand, increasing deployment densitiy through additional micro sites may maximize a network's energy efficiency. In that case the network operates at a load of less than 50 %. Moreover, a further gain of energy efficiency of about 20 % can be achieved due to macro site transmit power reduction while still providing coverage.","PeriodicalId":339596,"journal":{"name":"34th IEEE Sarnoff Symposium","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129184674","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The most prominent feature of this architecture is it's ability to employ a highly nonlinear PA, this highly efficient. This is accomplished via our novel real-time nonlinear closed-loop predictive calibration for correcting the PA's nonlinearity. In addition, our architecture makes it possible to eliminate or minimize the need for extensive factory calibration since our predictive realtime auto-calibration scheme does not require much prior knowledge of the system characteristics.","PeriodicalId":339596,"journal":{"name":"34th IEEE Sarnoff Symposium","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133648355","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This balanced amplifier achieves a gain of 30 dB from 19 GHz to 26 GHz. To reduce the signal loss and the physical dimensions of the 90° coupler utilized in this balanced amplifier, a meandered broadside coupler with shield is designed. This on-chip 90° coupler occupies a compact area of 300 um × 120 um. An effective technique based on tuning the width of the transistors to achieve wideband operation is also proposed in this paper. The proposed balanced amplifier design achieves an IIP3 of −6.0 dBm and an input 1-dB gain compression point of −16.5 dBm. The OIP3 and the output 1-dB gain compression point are 24.0 dBm and 10.7 dBm, respectively.","PeriodicalId":339596,"journal":{"name":"34th IEEE Sarnoff Symposium","volume":"244 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132184424","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we unveil the head-of-line blocking problem of MMM Clos-network switches with switch modules implemented by buffered crossbars, which causes performance degradation. We propose a three-stage buffered Clos-network switch with per-output flow queues in the switch modules at the first two stages to avoid head-of-line blocking. The proposed switch, called the MMeM switch, achieves higher performance than an MMM buffered Clos-network packet switch. We show the performance improvement of the proposed MMeM switch under different traffic patterns.","PeriodicalId":339596,"journal":{"name":"34th IEEE Sarnoff Symposium","volume":"97 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129349123","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents an edge-based packet probing technique to detect congestion that incurs modest control overhead. The approach presented, herein, is “Differential Performance Packet Probing” (DP3) and leverages the differential treatment of packets at the queues of routers and radios. By measuring loss rates across different types of probe packets, DP3 can detect congestion events and, furthermore, distinguish packet losses due to path congestion events from losses due to link outage events. Extensive results are reported for lab experiments of the DP3 concept in an emulated wireless network environment and in a wired Cisco environment. Detailed statistical analysis of the tradeoff between reliability and agility of the DP3 congestion indicator is also described.","PeriodicalId":339596,"journal":{"name":"34th IEEE Sarnoff Symposium","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129116964","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve has long been used for characterizing system performance, area under the ROC curve (AUC) measurement provides meaningful insights of the system performance. Signal detector's performance can be characterized simply by average AUC, since average AUC varies from 0.5 to 1. In the worst case scenario, the detector's performance can be no less than 0.5 and the best can be 1. In this paper simple expression of average AUC is developed based on the kth order derivative of the moment generating function (MGF) over the generalized fading channels for no-diversity and several diversity cases. Simplified expressions are derived for maximum ratio combing (MRC), square-law combing (SLC) diversity schemes and a simple CDF based single integral expression is developed for selection combining (SC) technique. Examples are given considering the Nakagami-m and Rice channels. Our approaches are simple and analytical results are even shown using the half integer bandwidth-time product (u) and the half integer Nakagami-m fading index. Different factors affecting energy sensing has been analyzed, which can be readily used for other applications such as cognitive radio.","PeriodicalId":339596,"journal":{"name":"34th IEEE Sarnoff Symposium","volume":"159 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126645621","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We demonstrate the importance of the relays for coverage and capacity enhancement and study how the number of relays and their position inside the cell impact the performance, and how an efficient relay location scheme can guarantee better performance with less relays per cell. Further we give an estimation of the amount of power per square meter on the ground when relays are used, with respect to traditional network, showing the fundamental role of relays for green networking. We consider the downlink of an LTE-Advanced network, in which all the User Equipments (UE) are supposed to be attached to the eNode-B (eNB) or Relay Node (RN) from which they receive more power. Numerical results are obtained through Monte-Carlo simulations and the performance measures are represented by the average effective Signal to Interference and Noise Ratio (SINR) and the average spectral efficiency.","PeriodicalId":339596,"journal":{"name":"34th IEEE Sarnoff Symposium","volume":"118 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131802081","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
