This paper concerned with the application of raw silk fiber to reinforcement for composite material. In this study, polypropylene (PP) resin was used for the matrix material and the composites were molded using the injection-molding method. Maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (MAPP) was also used as the binder resin.Mechanical properties of Silk/PP composites were discussed and compared with standard glass fiber reinforced plastics (GFRP). Furthermore, detailed SEM observation of the cross-section of each molded composite was carried out . As a result, the tensile strength and elastic modulus were found to increase with increasing silk fiber content. In particular, the Izod impact value for the Silk/PP composite was the same as that of GFRP. Moreover, good adhesion between the silk fiber and matrix material was achieved through use of MAPP due to the good reaction between MAPP and the hydroxy groups and amino groups of the silk fiber. Optimum weft-insertion conditions must be determined for each kind of weft yarn on the basis of the relationship between the airflow in the weft passage and the weft flight behavior. The relationship between weft-insertion conditions and weftinsertion speed of polyester textured yarns was experimentally examined by measurement of the weft tension using a benchmark-testing machine.On the other hand, the weft-insertion speed in AJL was numerically calculated under the consideration that it is a function of the air velocity in the weft-yarn flight path. In the computations, the velocity distribution issued from a circular jet was applied to the equations of the weft motion in the air jet loom as the velocity distribution of the weft passage.From the results, the maximum weft tension increased linearly with an increase in the weftinsertion speed, and also the rate of increase in the weft tension was dependent on the yarn count. Furthermore, of all the weft-insertion conditions, which include the supply air pressure and air injection timing for the main nozzle and sub-nozzles, the main nozzle air pressure most strongly affected the weft-insertion speed. The textile manufacture is obliged to shift to a large variety and small quantity of production. The improvement in efficiency of warp preparation and a quick determination of weaving conditions (air pressure and injection timing) is important to the air jet loom (AJL). In order to obtain basic data for determining quickly the weaving conditions in AJL of the profile reed with sub-nozzles, the air-drag coefficient of eight kinds of polyester textured multi-filament yarn was measured, and the factors which affect the air-drag coefficient of yarn were investigated. The following conclusions were obtained as a result. (1) The air-drag of polyester textured yarns which are 16.5 tex and 33.9 tex with 96 filaments became the largest. (2) Measuring the diameter of polyester textured yarn used in the experiment, the diameter changes with the static loads and approaches to about 1.8 times as long as the equivalent diameter calculated from yarn count.
