The data were collected from 798 students of American International University-Bangladesh during the academic session 2012-2013. Around 87% of the investigated students were high in awareness of health hazard of tobacco smoking but still 32.3% students were smokers. There was none who was low in awareness. The awareness had been measured by 20 items. Though most of the students were highly aware of the problem still a good number of them were smokers. Thus, a question, naturally, arose whether measure of awareness was reliable. In this paper, reliability measure had been done by Cronbach’s alpha [1]. The value of α is 0.94 indicating that the evaluation of knowledge of health hazard of tobacco smoking was excellent. Reliability had also been measured by Spearman-Brown formula and the value of the coefficient was 0.92 .","PeriodicalId":339096,"journal":{"name":"Open Access Journal of Addiction and Psychology","volume":"95 12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-04-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124570703","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The DSM-5 APA [1], further distinguishes the various schizophrenic disorders from other psychotic conditions based largely on their most salient corresponding presentations. For example, schizophrenic disorder, paranoid type is primarily distinguished from other conditions within this group (or other disorders for that matter), by the presence of persistent paranoid thoughts and beliefs. These are usually accompanied by commensurate distrustful attitudes, anxious feelings, and defensive behaviors.","PeriodicalId":339096,"journal":{"name":"Open Access Journal of Addiction and Psychology","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-04-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114227963","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Because other theories have failed to identify the internal drivers of problem gambling behavior among college students, Choice Theory was used to determine if the need for control or the need for achievement can predict at-risk problem gambling among the target population. The assessment tools/questionnaires used: (a) Demographic Information; (b) The South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS); (c) Desirability of Control Scale; and (d) The Gambling Motivation Scale. The SOGS was utilized to determine a classification for being at-risk of developing gambling disorder. Results from an independent samples t-test indicated that there was not a significant relationship between the classification status of being at-risk of developing gambling disorder and need for control among college students. However, results from an independent samples t-test indicated that there was a significant relationship between the classification status of being at-risk of developing gambling disorder and need for achievement among college students. Of the college students who participated in this study, 21.22% met the criteria for being considered at risk of developing gambling disorder, which is comparable to a previous study reporting 17% of college students meet the criteria for gambling disorder [4]. This rate of prevalence of students at-risk in the sample reaffirms the need for ongoing support and intervention for gambling disorder prevention and interventions with young adults in the college setting.","PeriodicalId":339096,"journal":{"name":"Open Access Journal of Addiction and Psychology","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132460604","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

GABA receptors as ion channels which are basically ligand gated ones, modulate the inhibitory synaptic transmission in the central nervous system. Alcohol addiction phases such as withdrawal, dependency and tolerance are associated with the GABA-ergic neurotransmission changes in the brain [1,2]. The neuroimaging studies with PET and SPECT have demonstrated that there are lower GABA-A benzodiazepine receptors availability in alcohol dependent subjects. In tobacco smoking status, higher availabilities of GABA-A benzodiazepine receptors have been demonstrated [3,4]. These findings suggest that tobacco smoking may suppress increasing in the availability of GABA-A benzodiazepine receptors in alcohol addiction. Moreover, such higher availability is related with alcohol withdrawal symptoms which are more pronounced in alcohol dependent nonsmokers than smokers. Such findings suggest that by suppression of the increased GABA-A benzodiazepine receptors availability during alcohol withdrawal, tobacco smoking may block symptoms of alcohol withdrawal. Overall, availability of GABA-A benzodiazepine receptors would increase in the early stages of withdrawal and then decrease during time. Such changes are mediated by tobacco smoking. The clinical implications of such findings suggest that nicotine replacement therapy can be helpful to tolerate the nicotine and alcohol withdrawal symptoms in smokers with alcohol dependency [3,4].","PeriodicalId":339096,"journal":{"name":"Open Access Journal of Addiction and Psychology","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121031038","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
