The situation in sub-Saharan Africa is particularly worrying, as children are at high risk of dying before their fifth birthday. This study analyses the economic and social determinants of infant mortality in Cameroon using a cross-sectional study design. A nationwide stratified, two-stage sampling was used to sample 9,733 children and their respective mothers. A logistic regression model was used for both bivariate and multivariate analysis with a statistically significant level of p<0.05. The children were predominantly male, with a sex ratio of 1.03. Infant mortality was associated with a statistically significant difference (p<0.05) in economic and social characteristics of the child and its mother, such as: age of the child between 25 and 60 months, second or higher birth order, average birth weight of the child, number of 2 to 3 children in the household, age of the mother, domestic violence against the mother, non-use of contraception by the mother, mothers of children residing in the North, Far-North, East and North West regions of the country. On the other hand, infant mortality was associated with a statistically non-significant difference (p>0.05) in economic and social characteristics, namely: child sex, age between 13 and 24 months, low and high child weights at birth, mother's level of education, marital status, mother's employment, religion, level of economic well-being, access to media, use of modern contraception, prenatal consultations in a health center, residence in an urban area, mothers resident in other regions of the country. The elimination of preventable deaths among children under 5 five years old by 2030 will depend on the extent to which economic and social determinants are taken into account in the public policies of resource-limited countries like Cameroon.","PeriodicalId":339086,"journal":{"name":"Central African Journal of Public Health","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126958622","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This research studied the factors associated with the acceptability of oesogastroduodenal fibroscopy in private health facilities in the city of Bobo-Dioulasso, in Burkina Faso. This were a cross-sectional study with prospective collection from 1 June to 10 December 2021 with data inclusion from 1 January 2013 to 31 December 2020. The data collected concerned notified cases of tumours and those diagnosed with cancer, socio-demographic characteristics, location and histological and histogenetic types of these cancers. From a sample of 180 patients, the mean age was 43 ± 15.1 years-old with a sex ratio of 1.1. The mean score of acceptability of oesogastroduodenal fibroscopy was low with 53.3% of patients having an acceptability score ≤ 107. As well, the mean score of information received by patients about OGDF was low. At univariate analysis, the factors associated with the acceptability of FOGD were: the presence of discomfort (p=0.041), the presence of anxiety (p=0.040), and the desire to forego performing the examination (p=0.007). In multivariate analysis, we did not find any factors associated with the acceptability of esogastroduodenal fibroscopy. The acceptability of esogastroduodenal fibroscopy is very important in the context of quality improvement in health care. The continuous training of health care personnel on oesogastroduodenal fibroscopy, as well as better patient education on FOGD during a pre-OGDF consultation, is an asset to achieve its acceptability by patients.","PeriodicalId":339086,"journal":{"name":"Central African Journal of Public Health","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132144423","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Infections, fragments of fungal cells, and metabolites of fungal organisms can all provide significant challenges in indoor structures, including prison inmate cells. In East Hararghe and Harari regional state, there is no evidence of a fungal load or associated factors in prisons. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the fungal indoor air quality and related factors in prison inmate cells. An Institution based cross-sectional study was conducted. The source and study population were all prisoner cells located in the East Hararghe zone and Harari regional state prisons. 62 prisoner cells were used in the investigation. The approach of non-random sampling was applied. Passively settle able plates were used to collect the samples (Koch sedimentation method). ANOVA, correlation, and chi-square statistical tests were used to examine the row data using SPSS statistical software and Microsoft Excel. The fungal concentrations were highest at 8:00 pm (537 CFU/m 3 ) and lowest at 2:00 pm (115 CFU/m 3 ), respectively. The number of people was poorly connected with the fungal load (r=0.192 and p=0.039), and there was a significant positive weak correlation between the fungal load and temperature (r= 0.275, P=0.031). In contrast, a significant positive correlation between the fungal load and relative humidity in prisoner cells was discovered (r = 0.983; p = 0.004). In conclusion, the fungal concentrations were in the intermediate region (<500CFU/m 3 ) except in one inmate cell of the investigated prisons. This study indicates that, it may pose threats to inmates. As a result, both the Harari region and the eastern Haragie zone prison offices should take action to address the issue. The prison facility needs to be restructured in accordance with current requirements.","PeriodicalId":339086,"journal":{"name":"Central African Journal of Public Health","volume":"126 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114221834","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This led us to study the hospital proportions and histological and histogenetic types of cancers in anatomical pathology at the Souro Sanou University Hospital (CHUSS) in Bobo-Dioulasso, and the possible implications for public health. This was a cross-sectional study that ran from June 1 to December 10, 2021 with data inclusion from January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2020. The data collected concerned: notified cases of tumors and those diagnosed with cancer, sociodemographic characteristics, location and histological and histogenetic types of these cancers. Of the 6,316 cancer cases notified by the different clinical services from 2013 to 2020, there were 1,388 cases of cancer confirmed (or 22.0%) by histology at the CHUSS anatomy-pathology department. Of the 3,605 specimens analyzed, this represented a malignancy proportion of 38.5%. There was an average annual number of 173.5 confirmed cancer cases per year. For a sex ratio of 0.4 and a female predominance of 72.1%, the average age of the cancer cases was 49.3±3.9 years (extremes from 1 to 92 years), with the 40–60-year age group being the most represented (46.4%) and those under 15 years of age representing 3.2%. The organs most affected by cancer were breast (25.5%), uterus (22.4%) and stomach (9.1%). Breast (32.9%) and cervical (31.1%) cancers were the most common in women. In men, the most frequent cancers were: stomach (19.8%) and prostate (13.9%). Histologically, more than two out of five cancers were carcinomas. Squamous cell carcinomas accounted for 43.37%, and adenocarcinomas were found in 13.61%. There was no difference in histogenetic or histological type according to age or sex. Affecting more the less than 60 years with 75,1%, it is about cancers avoidable by actions of promotion and prevention in public health. This underlines the importance of setting up a cancer registry and organizing cancer care based on promotion and primary prevention.","PeriodicalId":339086,"journal":{"name":"Central African Journal of Public Health","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126736550","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study explored by gender, the metabolic abnormalities and “metabolic obesity with body weight” (MONW) throughout the normal BMI quartiles (Q) of Burkinabè adults. Methods: We performed a secondary-analysis of data from the first WHO Stepwise approach to surveillance survey conducted in 2013 in Burkina Faso, and only adults with BMI between 18.5 – 24.9 kg/m² were included. Metabolic disorders (individual abnormal metabolic syndrome component, having at least two abnormalities and MONW) were described in BMI’ quartiles, for each gender, and the risk of occurrence of having at least two abnormalities or MONW was analysed using quartiles as dependent variables, after adjustment on sociodemographic and lifestyle factors. Results: I n the 3112 adults with normal BMI and despite their gender, low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol was widespread (>75%) and its distribution did not differ across quartiles, as for raised fasting blood glucose (its prevalence was low ≈ 8%). Elevated blood pressure was the predominant abnormality in overall men (35.3%) with a significant increment starting at Q3 and reached 42.8% in Q4, while abdominal obesity was predominant in overall women (27.2%) with a significant increase starting at Q2, and reached 53.8% in Q4. In men, MONW was low (2.3%), while 30.6% had at least two abnormalities with an increasing pick starting at Q3, and prevalence was 38.0% in Q4. In women, the prevalence of MONW and those with at least two abnormalities was 8% and 39% respectively, with a common significant elevation beginning at Q3 and respectively reached 16% and 56% in Q4. Independently of sociodemographic and lifestyle factors, the number of metabolic abnormalities started to increase at Q3 in both sexes. Conclusion: Prevalence of adults with at least two metabolic abnormalities was considerable, and the number of abnormalities increased with normal BMI, and more severely in female gender in whom the prevalence of MONW was alarming. Abnormalities should also be early screened in normal-weight Burkinabè adults, more especially when their BMI reaches the Q3 cut-offs, i.e., 21.5 and 21.1 kg/m² respectively for men and women.","PeriodicalId":339086,"journal":{"name":"Central African Journal of Public Health","volume":"211 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132525546","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
