Ten Corriedale lambs, with an average weight of 10.09 kg, were randomly assigned to two groups: Basal (B, 10 ppm Zn) and Supplemented with 30 ppm Zn (Z). The trial lasted 20 weeks. The animals were weighed every 4 weeks. Also with this periodicity, they were bled by jugular venipuncture. In weeks 6 and 20 the apparent dry matter digestibility (ADMD) and N balance were evaluated. At the end of the test the wool production and quality were measured.The weight gain and wool quality were similar in both groups, while wool production was 37.4% higher in group Z. According to the first balance period, ADMD was similar in both groups, but the retention of N was significantly higher in group Z than in group B (5.53 vs 4.03 g/day). In the second balance period there was a similar trend. There were no differencies between groups on hematocrit, hemoglobin concentration, red blood cells, total leukocytes, lymphocytes andneutrophils number. These results suggest that subclinical Zn deficiency reduces wool production, which may be related to lower protein synthesis.synthesis.","PeriodicalId":33906,"journal":{"name":"Ciencia Veterinaria","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45259189","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Chagas control program in the province of Rio Negro certified, through serological and entomological indicators, the interruption of vector transmission throughout the province. However, in recent years, conditions have been generated that may allow the re-emergence of the disease, such as the eventual domiciliation of wild vinchucas such as T patagonico. The objective was to evaluate the epidemiological situation of the vector through studies of home and peri-home infestation by triatomines and to carry out resistance analyzes to insecticides that were applied for many years in control. As a result, 143 homes were evaluated and 66 light traps were placed. In the intra-domicile all the dwellings were negative, with 3 being positive in the peri-domicile (2.1%) with captures of T-infestans and T. patagonica. No triatomines were captured with the light traps. The captured triatomines were T. infestans and T. patagonica, which were all negative for T. cruzi. Insecticide resistance studies showed that the colonies are still susceptible to deltamethrin.","PeriodicalId":33906,"journal":{"name":"Ciencia Veterinaria","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41840600","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As pulmonary extracts have surfactant substances, they are expected to produce a positive effect on the boar sperm fertility after cryopreservation. In order to have preliminary evidence regarding the absence / presence of toxicity of pulmonary extracts on semen, ejaculates from two boars, aged between 24 and 30 months, were used. Each ejaculate was divided into two groups. One of them was diluted with a middle-term commercial medium (Control group) and the other with the same medium plus the addition of: 2.5, 5 or 10% of pig pulmonary extract (Treatment group). As indicators of the treatment effect on semen quality, the live-dead ratio, the host test and the acrosome integrity were determined. Samples were evaluated after 0, 24 and 48 hours of incubation at 17 ° C and 36 ° C. The experiment was repeated in three ejaculates of each one of the boars, in order to determine interaction between the components of the preservation medium and the pulmonary extracts, and the quality of the porcine sperm. The results show that there are no differences in the parameters observed between the different evaluation moments, nor in the different extract variations, as well as no difference between individuals. It is concluded that pulmonary extracts do not present toxic effects on porcine sperm.","PeriodicalId":33906,"journal":{"name":"Ciencia Veterinaria","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46901508","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When the first egg was laid, body weight, age (an indicator of sexual precocity), weight of the first 10 eggs (an indicator of their initial weight), days needed to lay them (an indicator of regularity) and coefficient of variation of these weights (an indicator of uniformity) were recorded. All the eggs laid between sexual maturity and 72 weeks of age was weighed. Longitudinal data relating weekly average egg weight versus laying age were adjusted by non-linear regression with the Weatherup & Foster model. Birds were categorized by the values of each trait measured at sexual maturity and the category effect on the estimators of the function parameters was evaluated. Less precocious birds were heavier and laid larger eggs at the beginning of the cycle and in the asymptote, without differences on the egg weight maturation rate, in comparison to those more precocious. The latter began the laying period irregularly, requiring a greater number of days to lay the first 10 eggs and the weight of these had a higher coefficient of variation. The birds that began laying more uniform eggs in weight maintained that difference throughout the curve. Early selection of birds that begin laying at an older age, with greater body weight, more regularly and with heavier eggs uniform in size would show a favorable dynamic pattern in egg weight.","PeriodicalId":33906,"journal":{"name":"Ciencia Veterinaria","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48723476","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Throughout this history, much has been learned about the management of these giants, especially in terms of behavior, health, nutrition, among other basic needs that contribute to their well-being. This made it go from being a simple tool to part of a working team. One of the main problems that can be seen in elephants kept in captivity are the skin lesions caused during their daily activities. Today, there are several works and manuals that describe the steps to follow when handling a skin wound, especially with regard to recurrent wounds in these animals, whose skin has very particular characteristics. The protocols are based on surgical procedures and systemic antibiotic therapies. The problem that arises with these procedures is the difficulty of finding suitable personnel to carry out these procedures and the drugs indicated for this purpose. The objective of this work is not only to show that there is an alternative therapy to the management of cutaneous wounds in elephants, based on the use of peloids, the main component of which is diatoms but to highlight the importance of adapting to the natural behavior of the animal so that the therapy has positive results as well.","PeriodicalId":33906,"journal":{"name":"Ciencia Veterinaria","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49459690","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
