{"title":"Antara Larangan dan Pengecualian: Ihwal Partisipasi Aktif Imam dalam Partai Politik dan dalam Jabatan Publik","authors":"Rikardus Jehaut","doi":"10.31385/jl.v19i2.207.101-113","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.31385/jl.v19i2.207.101-113","url":null,"abstract":"This article - inspired by the notorious case of an Indonesian priest in North Sumatra running for public office despite stern and repeated warnings from his bishop not to do so - aims to elaborate the theme of active participation of priests in politics in the light of can. 285 § 3 and can. 287, § 2 of Code of Canon Law, using the method of juridical exegesis and historical-critical analysis of various legal grounds and various affirmations of the Church's Magisterium. Through careful study, the author shows that the Church, while acknowledge the political right of priests as well as the provision for exeption, imposing a prohibition on them from participating actively in the political arena. The ratio legis behind such prohibition are threefold, namely safeguard canonically the identity and the mission of the priests; priest as a symbol of unity, fraternity and peace; respect for the peculiar duties of the laity in politics. The author argues that the priests should not be given a permission to take any public office and should not take sides in the area of party politics since there are no situation that make it necessary to intervene in that way. Kirchberger","doi":"10.31385/jl.v19i2.206.157-168","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.31385/jl.v19i2.206.157-168","url":null,"abstract":"This article is based on a video by a conservative group in Indonesia that describes the position of Archbishop Vigano and has been circulating in Indonesia recently. The video argues that the Second Vatican Council left the true Church of Jesus Christ and created the Antichrist Church. In particular, they reject the teachings set forth in the Nostra Aetate decree regarding the truths contained in non-Christian religions and also the position regarding religious freedom as taught in the Dignitatis Humanae declaration. Because they do not agree with the basic direction of the teachings of the Second Vatican Council, they also demand that all council documents be canceled. This article responds to this conservative position by asserting and showing that the Church of Jesus Christ is not always the same, but Jesus brought a spirit into the world and the people who live according to that spirit must always seek new institutional forms in accordance with the development of society. It is according to this basic view that the conservative position is corrected by showing some of the historical facts and developments of theology throughout the history of the Church. This paper consists of two parts. The first part describes the theory of text in Ricoeur's hermeneutics. Ricoeur's most important contributions to this section are his description of threefold semantic autonomy: semantic autonomy with respect to the author's subjective intention outside the text, semantic autonomy with respect to the original cultural context in which the text was written, and semantic autonomy with respect to the original audience or addressee. An important consequence of semantic autonomy is that interpretation of a text is never reproductive but productive. The second part explains that the language of Scripture is much more like poetic language than scientific language. Poetic language is the language of disclosure, which expresses a deeper dimension of reality. The next five literary genres in the Scriptures are discussed, through which divine revelation is expressed: namely, narrative, prophetic, prescriptive, wisdom and hymnic genre. Various crises which have hit and are hitting the world motivated Küng to again struggle to bring peace about and to establish a new, better life order. By a global ethic – a basic consensus on binding values, noncancellable criteria, and basic attitudes which are affirmed by all religions, although dogmatically they are different, and which can actually be given by non-believers – Küng emphasizes important roles of religions without disregarding non-religious communities, which are principally present to bring peace about as the main characteristic of their teachings. Specifically, Küng’s opinion is relevant in an effort to bring peace about in Indonesia, which is very plural. Realizing that threats against peace and plurality in Indonesia often come and result from interreligious conflicts, a dialogue is absolutely necessary. As a concrete form of a global ethic, Küng suggests a critical dialogue. Representatives of the religions in Indonesia need to step forward and sit together in a give-and-take dialogue which introduces the special aspect and main direction of each of the religions. Followers’ steadfastness in the principles and seriousness in following the religions are two main keys to a critical dialogue, which can penetrate the foundation of each religion with all of its consequences. It is generally accepted that the plurality of life views must be addressed in the spirit of democracy that relies on the use of reason, where each person or group is given the opportunity to convey their perspectives. But the fact shows that the role of reason is getting weaker in deliberation, especially in countries that implement a system of representative democracy. Then, do we thus abandon democracy as an approach in addressing differences of opinion? Using a qualitative approach, the author argues that democracy remains the best choice in addressing differences of views. However, based on Arendt’s concept of politics as a speech, the ideal democratic approach should be deliberative rather than liberal because deliberative democracy aims to transform the perspective of each person or grouhlm.
