In the case of transfer lines, both U(i) and D(i) are single storages. Under some circumstances, machine i is starved. This is due to one or more storages in U(i) being empty. For example, if U(i) is a single storage, when that storage is empty, machine i is starved. Or, if machine i assembles parts from several storages, it is starved if any one of those storages is empty. When machine i is starved, it cannot operate. Consequently, it does not send parts to any storage in D(i) and it cannot fail.","PeriodicalId":338908,"journal":{"name":"1979 18th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control including the Symposium on Adaptive Processes","volume":"154 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1979-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116355982","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of the mixing system is to maintain a constant composition of the cement raw meal for the kiln despite variations of the raw material compositions. Experimental knowledge of the process dynnamics and the characteristics of the various disturbances is used for deriving a stochastic model of the system. The optimal control strategy is then obtained as a minimum variance strategy. The control problem has been solved using a self-tuning minimum variance regulator, resulting in a 34% decrease in the variance of the controlled variable during the first year of operation.","PeriodicalId":338908,"journal":{"name":"1979 18th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control including the Symposium on Adaptive Processes","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1979-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130990749","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The need for such remote systems is likely to appear before purely automatic devices become feasible. In the long run pattern recognition techniques will surely be used; and, we think that these techniques can reduce the operator work load in near-term systems. Several concepts in the use of TV image recognition techniques for control of links of a manipulator arm are presented. Equations of motion and control laws for two cases are developed. Initial results indicate that in some tasks this human operator hand-off of hand-eye coordination to machine can improve information to operator and speed of operation and will likely reduce operator fatique.","PeriodicalId":338908,"journal":{"name":"1979 18th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control including the Symposium on Adaptive Processes","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1979-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123194036","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We need, therefore, simple probabilistic models for the various \"noise\" processes that influence radar behavior in such an environment (e.g. amplitude scintillation, angle noise, sea clutter and sea multipath effects). In our previous work we have succeeded in developing such models that match very well experimental evidence concerning the statistics of such noise processes. The models developed consist of linear stochastic systems coupled with smooth memoryless nonlinearities. In this paper we report our current efforts to study such systems by analyzing the functional expansion that expresses the input-output behavior. In particular, we establish conditions for the statistical validity of a finite functional expansion and techniques for obtaining directly the required kernels from experimental data. We also discuss applications to some radar related detection problems. Finally, we indicate how these results can be extended to more general classes of systems than the ones we have considered to date.","PeriodicalId":338908,"journal":{"name":"1979 18th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control including the Symposium on Adaptive Processes","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1979-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125816702","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper a simple scheme suitable for real time applications which resolves this drawback is presented. When transmission losses are neglected, the constrained optimum can be analytically computed based on a distance measure of the unconstrained optimum schedule to the violated limits. In the presence of transmission losses, the problem is first converted into an equivalent lossless case by a simple transformation which can then be solved by the proposed algorithm.","PeriodicalId":338908,"journal":{"name":"1979 18th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control including the Symposium on Adaptive Processes","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1979-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123771885","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
