Many applications of the extended Kalman filter have been made to systems with parameters that are varying with time. We have adjusted Ljung's modification to this application, and also added small non-linear correction terms [3]. The evaluation of such identification algorithms for time-varying parameters must eventually reduce to an analysis of their performance in each practical application. The preliminary evaluation in [2] was based on experiments in human beings undergoing surgery, in which the pulmonary blood flow was relatively constant. Here we evaluate the performance of the algorithm on experiments in dogs, where drugs and other means were used to change cardiac output. Also, sources of error are discussed and their effect quantified with regard to the overall error. Sensitivities with respect to parameter variations are computed and graphed. The effect of model order is evaluated. Finally, the effect of starting the algorithm with different initial parameter values is investigated.","PeriodicalId":338908,"journal":{"name":"1979 18th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control including the Symposium on Adaptive Processes","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1979-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115777373","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Basically, nonlinear observers are employed to reconstruct system states which are related in some nonlinear way. A feed-forward technique, called the command generator tracker (Ref. 1), is then constructed to feed this information forward to the control channels to optimize performance The design structure is set up in such a way that conventional (optimal) feedback techniques are implemented independently to stabilize the system about trajectory perturbations Examples of this technique are given for three widely different aerospace applications and performance improvement is compared to classical and linear optimal designs.","PeriodicalId":338908,"journal":{"name":"1979 18th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control including the Symposium on Adaptive Processes","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1979-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132011691","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Several preprocessing algorithms are proposed to transform the two dissimilar video signals to a compatible format. The dissimilarity in the two images is due to the different spatial and spectral responses of the imaging sensors. Several thresholding techniques are presented for converting the eight bit preprocessed video to two levels for input to a binary correlation algorithm. The emphasis of the work was to determine the best trade-offs in order to obtain a real-time correlation algorithm but yet be accurate and reliable. Real-time in this application means that the match point of the two scenes is computed (or updated) on each field of video or at 1/60th second intervals. Simulation results using a particular edge extraction algorithm with several thresholding techniques are given. A new method for improving the correlator (or scene matcher) performance is given.","PeriodicalId":338908,"journal":{"name":"1979 18th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control including the Symposium on Adaptive Processes","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1979-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130289514","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Asymptotic stability of systems: Results involving the system topology 系统的渐近稳定性:涉及系统拓扑的结果

{"title":"Asymptotic stability of systems: Results involving the system topology","authors":"R. Miller, A. Michel","doi":"10.1137/0318013","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1137/0318013","url":null,"abstract":"In this paper we answer the following question for a large class of (linear and nonlinear) dynamical systems. Given is a system with dissipation and given is the associated conservative system. Suppose the associated conservative system is stable. What properties of the system topology (system configuration) will ensure that the overall system with dissipation is asymptotically stable? Both linear and nonlinear (Hamiltonian) systems are treated. For the linear case, necessary and sufficient conditions for asymptotic stability are established, while for the nonlinear case, sufficient conditions and also some necessary and sufficient conditions for asymptotic stability are obtained. It is emphasized that the application of the present results to specific problems will usually not require a search for appropriate Lyapunov functions. Indeed, a stability analysis by the present method involves the following two steps: (a) given a system with dissipation, the stability of its trivial solution (equilibrium) is ascertained by determining the stability of the associated conservative system, i.e., by determining whether the potential energy is a minimum at the equilibrium; and (b) attractivity of the equilibrium of the entire system (with dissipation) is determined from the system topology (system configuration). This approach to stability analysis appears to be new. Furthermore, since the present method involves concepts from control theory (namely, the notion of observability), these results provide further insight into the mechanisms of stability (and stabilization). To provide motivation and to demonstrate the applicability of the results, some specific examples are considered.","PeriodicalId":338908,"journal":{"name":"1979 18th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control including the Symposium on Adaptive Processes","volume":"2012 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1979-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127410403","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Load management on the electric power system 电力系统负荷管理

{"title":"Load management on the electric power system","authors":"H. Long, J. Smith","doi":"10.1109/CDC.1979.270179","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/CDC.1979.270179","url":null,"abstract":"Load management is the systems concept of altering the real or apparent pattern of electricity use in order to conserve resources, both fuel and capital, in the production and distribution of electrical energy. Load management is achieved through controlling the power flow in the electric system at the generating end (supply management) or the customer end (use management). Traditionally, the electric power system has been designed and operated to respond to the customers' instantaneous demands for electric power and the control problem has been one of load-following by generating units, i.e., supply management. The customer or use end of the circuit has been uncontrolled, resulting in large peaks and valleys in power demand which the generating units must follow. To reduce these large swings at the primary generating plants, some utilities have added energy storage using large pumped hydro installations whose operation is a part of the supply management. However, the remainder of the power system must continue to respond to the swings in demand. Use management operates at the customer end to control the power demand directly, either by the utility or by the customer or cooperatively. Load management is particularly attractive because of the potential to conserve energy and capital in both production and distribution of electric power, to shift a significant amount of fuel base from oil and natural gas to coal, nuclear, or renewable sources and to stabilize the cost of electricity.","PeriodicalId":338908,"journal":{"name":"1979 18th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control including the Symposium on Adaptive Processes","volume":"2014 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1979-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127463314","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The information is assumed to be given linear functions of the normally distributed state plus Gaussian noise. For certain ranges of the system parameters the conditions for optimality are satisfied by a linear decision rule. For this optimizing decision rule, the control gains on the available information are obtained from the stationary conditions which reduce to a set of algebraic equations and a matrix inequality condition. Since the quadratic performance criterion produces the only previously known closed form decentralized decision rule, the exponential criterion is an important generalization.","PeriodicalId":338908,"journal":{"name":"1979 18th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control including the Symposium on Adaptive Processes","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1979-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115011462","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The application of multiple target tracking theory to ocean surveillance 多目标跟踪理论在海洋监视中的应用

{"title":"The application of multiple target tracking theory to ocean surveillance","authors":"D. Reid","doi":"10.1109/CDC.1979.270112","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/CDC.1979.270112","url":null,"abstract":"This paper summarizes and extends recent results in Multiple-Target Tracking theory and applies the results to an Ocean Surveillance example. The relevant features of ships are characterized by either discrete-valued or continuous-valued state variables. An algorithm is developed which estimates both types of state variables. The inclusion of the attribute information aids the data association problem but complicates the target representation. In addition, the algorithm is capable of initiating tracks, accounting for false or missing reports, and processing sets of dependent reports. As each measurement is received, probabilities are calculated for the hypotheses that the measurement came from previously known targets in a target file, from a new target, or that the measurement is false. As more measurements are received, the probabilities of joint hypotheses are calculated recursively using all available information, such as: density of unknown targets, density of false targets, the probability of detection, location uncertainty and attribute data such as target identity, target type, contact number, and type radar. This branching technique allows correlation of a measurement with its source based upon subsequent, as well as previous data. To keep the number of hypotheses reasonable, unlikely hypotheses are eliminated and hypotheses with similar target estimates are combined.","PeriodicalId":338908,"journal":{"name":"1979 18th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control including the Symposium on Adaptive Processes","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1979-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114976283","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
