The results are compared with the model of the electronic structure previously proposed by Kulbachinskii et al. The experimental results did not reproduce the model. The tunneling measurements showed that Sn associated electronic states distribute in the lower valence band over a wide energy range.","PeriodicalId":338603,"journal":{"name":"Seventeenth International Conference on Thermoelectrics. Operating temperatures are the following: hot side temperature is 250/spl deg/C, cold side temperature is 50/spl deg/C. Heat transfer from a source is effected by high temperature liquid circulation. Heat removal from the generator is effected by water circulation. The generator is arranged from 400 blocks of 500 W each. A block volume is about 15 liters, its weight is about 15 kg. Specially designed highly effective heat exchangers together with Altek 1018 thermoelectric modules specially designed for that purpose have been used in the blocks. The generator's efficiency is about 6%. The generator's reliability is about 600 times greater than the reliability of known analogues. Depending on heat source, power generators of required power can be developed on the basis of such blocks. The generators are designed for utilization of waste heat from internal combustion engines, gas turbines, garbage combustion and from other industrial heat waste.","PeriodicalId":338603,"journal":{"name":"Seventeenth International Conference on Thermoelectrics. These results indicate that the compound is highly degenerate. The effect of the magnetic field has also been studied up to 1.2 T. The size of the transversal magnetoresistance with a magnetic field of 1.2 T is about 15% at lower temperatures, but it decreases to about 5% at higher temperatures. The effect of the magnetic field on the Seebeck coefficient is on the other hand more intense at higher than at lower temperatures. The experimental results have been analyzed by numerically solving the Boltzmann transport equation.","PeriodicalId":338603,"journal":{"name":"Seventeenth International Conference on Thermoelectrics. An attempt at rf-plasma processing has been made to improve the figure-of-merit of iron disilicides /spl beta/-FeSi/sub 2/. In addition, our recent results on the skutterudites CoSb/sub 3/ and related-materials are reported. The lattice thermal conductivity /spl kappa//sub L/ of CoSb/sub 3/ is a factor of 7 to 10 higher than that of a state-of-art thermoelectric material such as Bi/sub 2/Te/sub 3//Sb/sub 2/Te/sub 3/. This can be lowered to some degree by mixed-valence alloying. The /spl kappa//sub L/ of n-type Co/sub 0.9/(PdPt)/sub 0.1/Sb/sub 3/ was 0.025 W/cmK, which was one-fifths smaller than that of CoSb/sub 3/, which led to a ZT value of 0.9 at 800 K. However, the reduction in the lattice thermal conductivity by the mixed-valence alloying is limited. The lattice thermal conductivity is strongly affected by the Debye temperature /spl Theta//sub D/ of materials; therefore, the first matter to be settled may be to lower the value of /spl Theta//sub D/ for improving the figure-of-merit.","PeriodicalId":338603,"journal":{"name":"Seventeenth International Conference on Thermoelectrics. Therefore, for reaching the superconducting temperature range even for the cuprates with the highest critical temperature T/sub c//spl ap/130 K, new thermoelectric materials with their maximum value of z around 150 K or lower must be developed. We present experimental results on p- and n-doped compounds of the family Bi/sub 2-x/Sb/sub x/Te/sub 3-y/Se/sub y/ showing improved values of z at 150 K and below. We have studied in particular the influence of sintering.","PeriodicalId":338603,"journal":{"name":"Seventeenth International Conference on Thermoelectrics. Proceedings ICT98 (Cat. The electrical conductivity increases with an increase in the occupancies of the A/sub 1/ sites by metal atoms. The Seebeck coefficients of metal-doped /spl beta/-boron decrease with increasing metal concentration except for Zr-doped /spl beta/-boron. Both the electrical conductivity and the Seebeck coefficient increase with temperature, reflecting the variable-range hopping conduction. The power factor increases with temperature, and the n-type /spl beta/-boron whose power factor is three orders of magnitude larger than that of pure /spl beta/-boron at the room temperature was obtained by V- or Cr-doping at higher metal concentration.","PeriodicalId":338603,"journal":{"name":"Seventeenth International Conference on Thermoelectrics. The interest in this material system arises from its marked reduction in lattice thermal conductivity where the voids in the crystal structure are filled with \"guest\" atoms. The disorder resulting from these atomic inclusions acts as an excellent phonon-scattering mechanism, although this mechanism(s) is not as yet totally understood. In this paper we introduce a novel synthesis approach for the continuing investigation of this interesting crystal system.","PeriodicalId":338603,"journal":{"name":"Seventeenth International Conference on Thermoelectrics. Spark plasma sintering and subsequent hot-pressing were used to make the impurity doped Mg/sub 2/Si thermoelectric elements. The temperature dependence of thermoelectric properties such as the Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity was measured to clarify the optimum performance of sintered Mg/sub 2/Si elements. Moreover, the semiconducting properties such as Hall mobility and carrier concentration were measured by the van der Pauw method. In the case of 0.6 at%Sb doped n-type sintered elements the maximum power factor was obtained 3.0/spl times/10/sup -3/ W/mK/sup 2/ at 773 K and the figure of merit was 0.87/spl times/10/sup -3/ K/sup -1/ and dimensionless figure of merit ZT was 0.67. Concerning p-type Mg/sub 2/Si elements, silver doped, sintered Mg/sub 2/Si was made by the same procedure as n-type antimony doped sintered elements. The junction of a Mg/sub 2/Si element with the electrode was also studied to check the junction resistance between the thermoelectric element and the electrode. It was found that Fe was suitable as an electrode.","PeriodicalId":338603,"journal":{"name":"Seventeenth International Conference on Thermoelectrics. Proceedings ICT98 (Cat.
