We study MySpace through a comparative study over three different, but related, facets: (i) the sociability of users in MySpace based on relationship, messaging, and group participation; (ii) the demographic characteristics of MySpace users in terms of age, gender, and location, and a study of how these factors correlate with their privacy preferences; and (iii) the text artifacts of MySpace users, which can be used to construct language models that distinguish MySpace users not just by who they say they are but also by the language model they employ. Using multinomial kernel machines, we demonstrate that a data representation based on counting character n-grams is able to improve on results previously attained on the MPQA corpus using word-based n-grams and syntactic information. We compare two types of string-based representations: key substring groups and character n-grams. We find that word-spanning character n-grams significantly reduce the bias of a classifier, and boost its accuracy.","PeriodicalId":338112,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International AAAI Conference on Web and Social Media","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123667643","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Semantic Web is mainly aimed at creating standard ontologies. However, users have different preferences and evolving requirements. It is not practical to attempt perfect schema definitions with strict constraints. Creating structured formats should be a collaborative and evolutionary process. Social software motivates wide participation by providing easy interface. We propose a system called StYLiD for sharing wide variety of structured information. Users freely define their own structured concepts. The system consolidates different versions defined by different users. Combined search and browsing can be done. Popular concepts gradually emerge from the concept cloud and stabilize. Concept definitions are flexible. The suggestive range for attribute values does not constrain the contributors. StYLiD generates unique dereferenceable URIs so that data items can form a linked data web. Structured data is embedded using RDFa.","PeriodicalId":338112,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International AAAI Conference on Web and Social Media","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122054593","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We estimate the behavior of spammers when creating splogs from other sources by analyzing the characteristics of keywords contained in splogs. Since splogs often cause noises in word occurrence statistics in the blogosphere, we assume that we can efficiently collect splogs by sampling blog homepages containing keywords of a certain type on the date with its most frequent occurrence. We manually examine various features of collected blog homepages regarding whether their text content is excerpt from other sources or not, as well as whether they display affiliate advertisement or out-going links to affiliated sites. Among various informative results, it is important to note that more than half of the collected splogs are created by a very small number of spammers.","PeriodicalId":338112,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International AAAI Conference on Web and Social Media","volume":"121 2 Pt 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114945665","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They do so by shaping bloggers' group (subordinate) and organizational (superordinate) identities, which affect knowledge sharing between members of different work-groups in an organization. Building on existing research on psychological identity and on knowledge transfer, we make the case for the benefits of integrating these two research streams; more important, we identify blogging communities as factors in shaping individuals' identities and potentially facilitating knowledge transfer within organizations.","PeriodicalId":338112,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International AAAI Conference on Web and Social Media","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128259651","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We classify nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs into semantic categories by using the General Inquirer dictionary. Then distributions of these categories and correlations among them are examined both within and between blogs of the two opposite political leanings. Results show that although words of certain categories tend to appear together while others do not within blogs of a political leaning, the semantic category distribution of words used by left-wing bloggers is very similar to those by right-wing bloggers, suggesting single words alone do not account for major difference between these two major categories of blogs. Lastly, by examining preliminary results of association rule mining of nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs in sentences, we posit that the similarity and/or difference between blogs of opposite political orientations can be detected by extracting opinion expressions around collocation of nouns and verbs (together with modifiers).","PeriodicalId":338112,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International AAAI Conference on Web and Social Media","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126478882","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the case of question-answering forums, users and QA boards constitute a heterogeneous network whose nodes are users/boards and edges are authorship. Discovering both user communities and board communities and finding correlations between them will clarify their characteristics. This paper describes an attempt for analyzing heterogeneous social networks obtained from Yahoo! Chiebukuro (Japanese Yahoo! Answers). A new measurement for the correlation between user communities and board communities is defined, and characteristics of discovered communities are analyzed using it.","PeriodicalId":338112,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International AAAI Conference on Web and Social Media","volume":"187 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127915360","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One barrier to this new mode of storytelling is the lack of accessibility; existing Internet search tools are not tailored to the unique characteristics of this textual genre. In this paper we describe our efforts to develop a search engine specifically for the stories that appear in Internet weblogs, called StoryUpgrade. This application utilizes statistical text classification technologies to separate story content from other text in weblog entries, and facilitates searches for stories that are related to particular activities of interest.","PeriodicalId":338112,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International AAAI Conference on Web and Social Media","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133239100","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With the advent of social networks, impressions now may form online rather than in a face-to-face context. This research explores aspects of online impression formation and discusses the crucial role of user profiles in this process. By examining users' decisions in an experimentally controlled social network, we show that users need only a thin slice of profile information in order to form impressions of others online. Additionally, specific profile attributes are evaluated for their perceived utility (how much do users choose to view these attributes), predictiveness (how well they serve as a proxy for a full profile), and diagnosticity (their ability to help users choose between online profiles). Findings provide design suggestions for better profile displays when space is restricted.","PeriodicalId":338112,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International AAAI Conference on Web and Social Media","volume":"82 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130405878","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
