The drives and motors were failing at an unacceptable rate which created the financial justification for the replacement. Throughout this project, key decisions were made which determined how successful the new installation would be. The most important of these key initial decisions was to replace the failing DC motors with AC (alternating current) motors. Once the project was complete, the realized benefits were stunning and far exceeded the project’s initial simple goal of reliable drives and motors. Additional unexpected benefits included significant energy savings, significant power factor improvement, a much simpler hardware and software infrastructure, and a cooler basement.This paper will discuss:•the driving reason to replace the DC drives.•the justification for replacing the DC motors with AC.•why the motor hp decreased from 1000hp to 700hp.•the decision-making process and project progression.•the benefits and outcomes of the completed project.","PeriodicalId":337924,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE IAS Pulp and Paper Industry Conference (PPIC)","volume":"13 8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121042465","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The reason for this is that a great number of electrical engineers are not following the necessary steps to ensure this protection, or they don’t have the necessary tools to evaluate the withstand ratings of small conductors. Deficient protection of small conductors against high-level fault currents could have devastating consequences. This article gives a step-by-step method to determine if a small conductor in a low voltage distribution system is properly protected against high-level fault currents.","PeriodicalId":337924,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE IAS Pulp and Paper Industry Conference (PPIC)","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123317634","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This method is suggested as a tool for risk analysis required for task planning prior to having a comprehensive IEEE 1584–2018 arc flash analysis performed. This article will be an explanation of a more practical implementation of the method described in the first article, including reference graphs and tables which may be used to assess a situation that a worker can encounter. Digital switchgear enables a safer work environment through design enhancements which also reduce costs for the engineering, manufacturing, commissioning and operation of the system. The digital switchgear solution is increasingly being considered in electrical distribution and is available through multiple vendors’ portfolios. It is based on technologies such as current and voltage sensors with low-energy analog outputs, finger-safe digital test switches, IEC 61850 incorporated into modern numerical Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) and switchgear condition monitoring devices. Due to the increased simplicity and reliability and by reducing the interaction with the equipment by service technicians, operational safety is dramatically increased. In this paper, we contrast the characteristics of digital and conventional switchgear in terms of flexibility, simplicity, ease of use, efficiency and safety. The practical experiences gained from initial projects in the field are presented.","PeriodicalId":337924,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE IAS Pulp and Paper Industry Conference (PPIC)","volume":"78 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132151881","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recent advances in drive systems allow the use of PWM IGBT converters for DC motors, that typically had been used in AC motor control. However, IGBT / PWM inverters introduces effects such as voltage spikes caused by sudden changes and common mode voltages. These effects can cause accelerated deterioration of the insulation and bearings of the existing motor. This article presents a novel filter design that achieves optimal performance by mitigating these effects, presenting advantages, such as size, economy, efficiency, versatility, modularity and scalability versus traditional RLC filters.","PeriodicalId":337924,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE IAS Pulp and Paper Industry Conference (PPIC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130232828","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
