They are facing the most devastating impacts of local and global challenges, including climate change. This gives a high priority to upgrading projects in these areas. However, a special concern should be given to the environmental and social impacts of these areas and the required upgrading projects to achieve sustainability in the short-term and long-term. This research paper aims to extract the common environmental and social issues in four informal areas in great Cairo and identify the required upgrading projects in these sites. It relies on 31 EIA studies of upgrading projects in four slum areas within the Cairo metropolis the researcher share in their preparation; Izbit Khayrallah, Al Zawya Al-Hamraa, Ard Al-Lewa and Mît Uqba. The comparative analyses were used to highlight EIA outcomes and their added values that could support the sustainability in these areas and in similar projects of other slums in Egypt. Site visits and interviews with stakeholders and local people were accomplished, during the construction phase of these projects, to investigate the acceptance of mitigation measures. Finally, guidelines and learned lessons were extracted in order to enhance the whole EIA procedure within a similar context.","PeriodicalId":337725,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Egyptian Academic Society for Environmental Development. Seleem","doi":"10.21608/jades.2022.266810","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.21608/jades.2022.266810","url":null,"abstract":"Natural filtration is a process wherein surface water is filtered through the bank or bed of a river or lake. The process is referred as river/lake bank filtration (RBF/ LBF). Bank filtration has been shown to be effective in attenuating a wide variety of materials including turbidity, natural organic matter, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, taste and odor causing compounds and microorganisms etc. The RBF is considered as a classified and a low-cost treatment (or pretreatment) method. This study presents an attempt to explore the potential implementation sites for the RBF technology in a full-scale RBF plant located in BaniMurr– Assiut - Upper Egypt as section of the Nile valley to produce drinking water. To predict the quality characteristics of the BF, water samples were collected from pumping wells placed near the potential BF site and the surface water system. There are 4 extraction wells in the BF field, which are operated mutually. Other set of water samples were collected from two test wells situated at the potential BF field at 7 m and 15 m away from the Nile River, respectively. These water samples were collected once a week for duration of three months Quality measurements of physical, chemical, biological and microbiological characteristics were obtained. Comparison between the produced water with the surface and the natural background groundwater for the investigated plant has proven the effectiveness of RBF technique for potablewater supply in Upper Egypt under such hydrological and environmental conditions. However, there are some aspects that could restrict the BF efficacy and must therefore be considered during the design process. These include; i) over-pumping which increases the travel time and thus decrease the efficiency of treatment; ii) locating the wells near the surface water systems (<50 m) decreases the travel time to the limit (>10days) and thus could restrict the treatment capacity; iii) the consequences of lowering the surface water level can be regulated through the continuous operation of the wells. It was concluded that longer travel increases the potential for environmental anaerobic conditions. This enhances the reduction of undesirable and toxic elements (e.g., Fe, Mn, and As), and consequently has an adverse effect on the bank-filtrate quality. Based on these assumptions, a travel time of 10 to 50 days was regarded as acceptable. The identification of the correct position to install the BF wells is a critical factor for the successful application of the BF technique. The economic study ultimately demonstrated that BF is an economic and sustainable technique for implementation in BaniMurr City to address the demand for potable water.","PeriodicalId":337725,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Egyptian Academic Society for Environmental Development. Seedlings were grown at the nursery of the Department of Forestry and Range Sciences, University of Al-Fashir, North Darfur, Sudan. Fifty four seedlings per provenance were selected and divided into well-watered (W) and water-stressed (D) and all data were collected for these seedlings. The results revealed that there was midday depression with evening recovery of effective photochemical efficiency of PSII (ΔF/Fm’) and maximum photochemical efficiency of PSII (Fv/Fm) in all seedlings throughout the measurement course reflecting the capability of both provenances to keep intact photosynthetic apparatus for more than nineteen days under drying soil. Substantial direct correlation between ΔF/Fm’ and electron transport for both provenances and inverse relationship between air temperature and Fv/Fm for P1 were established. Cyclic droughts affected negatively on the morphology of seedlings for both provenances as the height, stem diameter, and leaf number of water stressed seedlings was reduced substantially compared to well-watered. P1 seems to have greater morphological growth compared to P2 hence El Fasher’s provenance tends to be more appropriate for plantations in arid environments.","PeriodicalId":337725,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Egyptian Academic Society for Environmental Development. The present work aims of harnessing nanotechnology as one of the most important frontier sciences to develop the printing of natural fibers using the most ecologically friendly dyes, namely turmeric dye to confirm the sustainability of the environment for upcoming generations, decrease pollution resultant from textile printing, overcome the harms of using synthetic colorants, synthetic thickeners, and synthetic fibers on environmental balance and human healthiness. Environmental natural dye (turmeric dye) and the natural thickener (tamarind thickener) are used to produce a natural printing paste with a proper viscosity for printing natural fabrics by the flat silk screen printing. In this work, three diverse methods of treating fabrics were used, which are pre-treatment, simultaneous treatment, and post-treatment with TiO2 nanoparticles at varying concentrations (0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, and 2% W.O.F). TiO2 nanoparticles were prepared using sol-gel technique. The prepared nanoparticles were analyzed using Scanning electronic microscope(SEM), and transmission, electronic microscope(TEM), tensile strength and elongation, microbial protection, Color strength K/S values, fastness properties, and Ultraviolet protection factor (UPF were measured on fabric samples. Results presented that the K/S values of treated samples are higher than the original samples. All treated fabrics have excessive fastness values for washing, perspiration, and rubbing. But all treated fabric printed with curcuma show low light fastness properties. Rise in the tensile strength of fabrics. The combination of these nanoparticles in the structure of the natural fabrics creates the ending product antimicrobial. The UPF values of all the treated printed fabric samples are upper than those of the blank ones. Development of the function and health properties and value of the resultant fabrics while keeping the ecological balance. By overcoming the lowly shadow and fastness properties of natural colorants by treating fabrics with green materials. Rise the durability of treated natural fabrics and the default service life. The printed fabrics obtained advance an antibacterial agent for Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli , and ultraviolet protective.","PeriodicalId":337725,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Egyptian Academic Society for Environmental Development. This composite gained new characteristics of large surface area, mesoporous structure and magnetic properties and it was used as a low cost adsorbent for the removal of methylene blue (MB) as a cationic dye from aqueous solution. (AS) and (ASRHNMC) were characterized by FT-IR, XRD, BET N2, EDX, SEM, TEM and XRF and were compared to adsorption ability against MB dye. The pH of the solution, sorbent dose, initial dye concentration, contact time and temperature were investigated using batch sorption technique for (MB) dye. The experimental results have pointed out that the adsorption equilibrium data is fitted well to the Langmuir isotherm reflecting favor formation of monolayer of MB dye on composite surface. The value of enthalpy change indicating that the removal process is endothermic. The adsorption process follows pseudo-second order rate equation and the negative values of standard free energy (G◦) suggested that the adsorption process is spontaneous. The repeatability and regeneration studies of (ASRHNMC) for adsorption of MB were investigated and the results indicated the ability of reuse this composite several times in removal of MB from aqueous solutions.","PeriodicalId":337725,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Egyptian Academic Society for Environmental Development. Major planktonic groups and certain physico-chemical parameters were investigated monthly at this water plant to elucidate its performance efficiency in treating and enhancing the wastewater. It was apparently that protozoa and rotifers represent the major groups in that wastewater treatment plant. Protozoa are represented by three major phyla (Sarcodina, Mastigophorea and Ciliophora) where the ciliated protozoans prevail the other two phyla. The numerical densities of sessile peritrich ciliates were less abundant than other ciliated protozoan types (crawling and swimming ciliates). It was proved that the maximal and minimal numerical densities of total protozoans of the present investigation exhibited 6956 and 1716x 10 2 /L during March and December, respectively. Simultaneously, the uppermost numerical values of sarcodines, flagellates and ciliates were 565, 2211 and 5631 2 /L during May, February and April, while the lowest ones were 30, 87 and 1716x 10 2 /L on September, July and December, respectively. Different types of protozoan were proved to be significantly influenced to varying levels with certain physico-chemical parameters. From the technological point of view, it was proved that the performing efficiency of the activated sludge of the present study is more or lessparallel to those of other wastewater treatment plants in different provinces of Egypt which gives an indication that there is a critical strategic need for the government to have more treated water to be used in agricultural and industrial activities.","PeriodicalId":337725,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Egyptian Academic Society for Environmental Development.
