One MUOS proposal relies on a constellation of GEO spacecraft that uses non-processing repeaters and multiple spotbeams for worldwide Earth-coverage. UHF frequency reuse greatly increases the number of narrowband voice/data channels available to mobile units. A key design element is the large antenna reflector with an area of 1250 square meters.","PeriodicalId":334957,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 1999. IEEE Military Communications. Approximate expressions for the steady-state symbol timing error probability density function and timing error variance are obtained. Analytic and simulation results show acceptable bit error rate (BER) performance for this scheme. This paper shows that the steady-state bit error rate of the ZIFZCD employing the symbol synchronizer with overall loop gain K less than 0.1 is close to that of the ZIFZCD with perfect symbol synchronization under static and mobile fading environments.","PeriodicalId":334957,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 1999. Four protocols were evaluated: the wireless Internet routing protocol (WIRP), a link state (LS) algorithm with constrained LS updates, a distance vector variant of WIRP, and temporally ordered routing algorithm (TORA). The goal was to determine how well these routing protocols worked in specific tactical conditions, supporting a given mix of traffic. Factors varied included tactical scenario, network size, and loading. Tactical scenario included different connectivities (e.g., \"dense\" versus \"sparse\") and link fluctuation rates (e.g., \"high\" versus \"low\"). Metrics collected included average end-to end delay per application, path length, total efficiency, and fraction of user messages received. We found that certain protocols performed better in densely connected networks than in sparser networks (e.g., TORA), while some performed better in sparser networks (e.g., LS). One protocol, WIRP, performed well in both types of networks over the scenarios evaluated, Several remaining issues and areas for continued research are identified.","PeriodicalId":334957,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 1999. Technology and products alone will not automatically bring these advantages to the military. A system architecture approach is needed. Our approach translates user driven requirements into products that are secure, interoperable, and easy to use. Using the DoD's C4ISR Architecture Framework, Version 2.0, we define operational, system, and technical views for secure network voice. From these views, we explore some enabling technologies and applications to make network voice an information appliance for Joint Vision 2010.","PeriodicalId":334957,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 1999. In suppressing the narrowband interference, the transform domain approach has been chosen, i.e. the interference suppression takes place in the frequency domain. This approach is more practical since the duration of a frequency hop may be prohibitive to the use of time domain adaptive filtering. The aim of this paper is to study the relative performance of three different schemes used in determining and suppressing the interfered frequencies in the frequency domain, namely the exciser structure (EXC), phase interference suppressor (PIS) and a novel bit pattern matched phase interference suppressor (BPM-PIS). The interference environment changes from frequency hop to hop but during each hop the interference is considered time-invariant. To avoid spectral leaking of the interfering power, three different candidate windowing approaches are performed prior to transformation. The transformations are accomplished with the FFT- and the inverse FFT algorithms. After the interference suppression the signal is transformed back to time domain to be fed to the DS-code matched filter. The criterion used for the performance comparisons is the bit error probability as a function of E/sub b//N/sub 0/ and S/J. The numerical results were obtained by Monte Carlo simulations.","PeriodicalId":334957,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 1999. IEEE Military Communications. Conference Proceedings (Cat. A priority assignment scheme is presented to reallocate the available communications bandwidth based on the value to the end user of the information contained in individual messages, and on the contribution of each item to overall mission success. Analysis of data from previous exercises suggests that even a simple such modification to communications procedures could increase the effectiveness of one critical command-and-control task, over-the-horizon targeting, by as much as 22%.","PeriodicalId":334957,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 1999. These systems, known collectively as the area common user system (ACUS) are now nearing the end of their planned life cycle. Their replacement, WIN-T, will provide an advanced seamless multimedia transport system that will connect and serve all Army echelons. It will be a mobile high capacity secure and survivable network. This paper describes the existing systems and the way in which WIN-T will provide an operational replacement. The paper also addresses the cost as an independent variable (CAIV) acquisition method that will be used by the Army to acquire the new system.","PeriodicalId":334957,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 1999. These so-called \"universal\" classifiers have been shown to be asymptotically optimal under very broad statistical conditions on the signals of interest and have been successfully applied to problems in communication signal modulation classification, face recognition for entry control, and as a CDMA receiver for wideband communications. Unfortunately, there are many important applications where training data may not be readily available or is unreliable, or is simply too costly to obtain. To address these limitations of trained systems, we present a new formulation of the universal classifier which does not require explicit training data. This new blind classifier extracts the necessary training information directly from the test data and uses it optimally in constructing the decision statistics. Examples from communication systems are presented. The results show that the performance of this new receiver exceeds that of standard \"trained\" receivers and nearly matches that of the globally optimum receiver.","PeriodicalId":334957,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 1999.
