This paper presents a stress-free non-intrusive way of taking class attendance using face as the biometric It also has the added novelty of relaying vital information about class attendance to handheld devices via any available cellular network. During enrollment, a camera was used to acquire facial images that were made into templates using Fisherfaces algorithm. These templates were stored in a database. During verification or attendance taking, facial features extracted from acquired face images and stored picture templates were compared using Fisher Linear Discrimination algorithm for any match within the pre-set threshold. Vital information about collated attendance reports were sent via a cellular network to designated handheld devices. The designed and implemented system had 54.17% accuracy during verification when lighting was varied without any variation in facial expression during enrollment. The system had 70.83% accuracy during verification when facial expressions were varied along with variations in lighting conditions during enrollment.","PeriodicalId":334818,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 3rd International Conference on Electro-Technology for National Development (NIGERCON)","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123300602","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unlike object detection, human detection from an aerial image is a challenging classification problem because of different posture appearance of human in an image. More so, at high altitude human shape appear deformed. Different features selection and different algorithm have been proposed. Although effective, but limited due to, characteristic of human posture in an image. In order to address this problem, this research proposed a Speeded-Up Robust feature selection and SVM for human detection from an aerial image due to computational speed and robustness of the SURF feature. This approach would help in better human detection from aerial images irrespective of position and movement for either rescue or surveillance mission. Aerial images were acquired preprocess and segmented using Otsu segmentation. A database comprises of two hundred images was created; 70 percent (140 images) of it was used in training the classifier and 30 percent (60 images) for testing the classifier. Accuracy of 50%, specificity of 57.1%, sensitivity of 46.2% and precision of 66.7% was achieved. These results can be used for a better human detection from an aerial image irrespective of the position or movement.","PeriodicalId":334818,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 3rd International Conference on Electro-Technology for National Development (NIGERCON)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114643555","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Determination of a suitable detection threshold is an important aspect of spectrum occupancy measurement. Inappropriate choice of the threshold value may either increase the probability of false alarm or failure detection. However, the most appropriate threshold value is not yet clearly stated, though, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has provided a benchmark of 10 dB above the noise level as an acceptable threshold value. In this paper, the effects of energy detection threshold techniques on duty cycle in the GSM bands are examined. Spectrum measurements were conducted in the GSM 900 and 1800 MHz bands in Ilorin, Nigeria to cover a bandwidth of 105 MHz. Experimental results based on analytical method of determining noise level (theoretical) and those obtained based on actual measurements of the noise floor (measured) were analyzed. Findings indicated that the MaxNoise overestimates the occupancy values across all bands while the ITU 10 dB was found to be too conservative. Therefore, for optimum prediction, 5 dB above the measured average noise level should be considered as detection threshold. Furthermore, it was found that the number of frames of the sensing data do not have significant effect on the duty cycle.","PeriodicalId":334818,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 3rd International Conference on Electro-Technology for National Development (NIGERCON)","volume":"75 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117338763","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The arrival rates usually exceed service rates despite Ethernet TCP windowing and layer-3 fair queuing. This is unacceptable in Osmotic computing paradigm which houses machine to machine cloud elasticity especially for IoT plug and play edge devices. This research proposes Fog and server consolidation (SC) in distributed high performance data centers (D-HPDCs) as a middleware solution to solve the problem. A candidate scheme called green virtualization is used to share the capabilities of physical servers (bare metals) by splitting resources among operating systems that host an on-demand smart grid application. AType-I virtual machine hypervisor is used to mitigate the various pitfalls in legacy datacenters (DCs) such as resource availability, query response time, scalability and network quality of service (QoS). MATLAB SimEvent simulation is used to realize a case-based Branch-and-Bound heuristics as an optimization scheme in the green virtualized DC. Within the elasticity zone, performance evaluation between Type-I virtualized and non-virtualized DC is carried out. The benefits of virtualized DCs using cloud elasticity design framework is highlighted. The results showed that the Type-1 virtualized DC scenario had better QoS performance metrics compared with the non-virtualized DC. Consequently, SC using virtualization is shown to be efficient for supporting multi-constrained DC environments.","PeriodicalId":334818,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 3rd International Conference on Electro-Technology for National Development (NIGERCON)","volume":"114 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123296307","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most of the implemented biometrie attendance systems are unimodal. Unimodal biometrie systems may be spoofed easily, leading to a reduction in recognition accuracy. This paper explores the use of bimodal biometrics to improve the recognition accuracy of automated student attendance systems. The system uses the face and fingerprint to take students' attendance. The students' faces were captured using webcam and preprocessed by converting the color images to grey scale images. The grey scale images were then normalized to reduce noise. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) algorithm was used for facial feature extraction while Support Vector Machine (SVM) was used for classification. Fingerprints were captured using a fingerprint reader. A thinning algorithm digitized and extracted the minutiae from the scanned fingerprints. The logical technique (OR) was used to fuse the two biometric data at the decision level. The fingerprint templates and facial images of each user were stored along with their particulars in a database. The implemented system had a minimum recognition accuracy of 87.83%.","PeriodicalId":334818,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 3rd International Conference on Electro-Technology for National Development (NIGERCON)","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114605840","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Antenna mismatch leads to power loss which further lowers the energy efficiency of mobile network. Microstrip antennas for base station were designed with different substrate materials based on transmission line model to investigate the impact relative permittivity or dielectric constant on antenna matching. The calculated and simulated values of voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) which is one figure of merit for antenna matching show direct proportionality. Better matching was obtained by using substrate of low dielectric constant (other than air) such as duroid with VSWR of 2.3 and power loss of 10.5%. The maximum power loss of 92.8% was given by Microstrip antenna designed with Silicon substrate of dielectric constant 11.9 and VSWR of 28.0. The paper recommends that matching network should be employed in base station antenna design so as to handle other antenna components that might detune the antenna thereby reducing the energy efficiency.","PeriodicalId":334818,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 3rd International Conference on Electro-Technology for National Development (NIGERCON)","volume":"76 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124136111","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The system uses phase sensors to monitor the voltage in each phase. The voltages monitored by the phase sensors are then fed into the analog to digital converters (ADCs) embedded inside the PIC microcontroller for analysis. The PIC microcontroller is in charge of all the control operation in the system and takes intelligent decisions based on the analysis. The decisions of the microcontroller are used to control the operation of the power circuit, which has three contactors, through relays. The phase sensors also help the system to sense any abnormal condition in any of the phases which may be low voltages, high voltages or blackouts. The system automatically disconnects the load from the mains source when there is any abnormality and transfers it to the standby generator source. It then starts the standby generator and continues to monitor the mains for the restoration of power. Once power is restored and the quality of power in the phases is perfect, the system automatically transfers the load to the mains source and stops the standby generator. At each point in time, the voltage levels of each of the phases of both the mains and the generator outputs are displayed on the 16 by 4 line LCD display.","PeriodicalId":334818,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 3rd International Conference on Electro-Technology for National Development (NIGERCON)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130143837","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, fraudulent fingerprints made in order to imitate the live ones with a view to deceiving these systems are now common. It is therefore important to develop a robust authentication system capable of detecting or recognizing liveness in any fingerprints presented to the authentication system. This paper therefore developed a software-based fingerprint spoof detection model using deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) features extracted from a set of live and spoof fingerprint images. The extracted features are then separately fed to two trainable classifiers namely logistic regression (LR) and support vector machine (SVM). Three variants of the SVM were used based on the training kernel: radial basis function (RBF), linear and polynomial kernels). Experiments performed on the Biometrika datasets obtained from the LivDet2009 database yielded a true accept rate (TAR) of 97.96%, a true reject rate (TRR) of 85.95%, and an average classification accuracy (ACA) of 91.94% for the LR classifier. An accuracy of 100% was obtained for the SVM trained using RBF kernel while an accuracy of 96.16% was obtained using the linear kernel. SVM trained using polynomial kernels of orders 2 and 3 yielded accuracies of 99.6163% and 99.4244% respectively. The model's accuracy was observed to decrease as the polynomials order increased. All experiments were carried out in MATLAB programming environment.","PeriodicalId":334818,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 3rd International Conference on Electro-Technology for National Development (NIGERCON)","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132878884","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For this purpose, field equivalence principle applied with appropriate boundary conditions enables derivation of model equation of the magnetic current in the slot. Solution of the derived integro-differential equation using the method of moments as a numerical tool yields the needed magnetic current distribution in the slot. It is shown here that the magnetic current distribution of a half-wave slot is bell-shaped and tapers to zero at both ends of the slot length at all frequencies while those of fixed length slots have different profiles at different frequencies. Besides, magnetic current distributions of fixed length slots do not taper to zero at slot ends. It is also established here that the absolute value of magnetic current density of half-wave slot increases linearly with frequency whereas that of fixed length slot does not follow a definite pattern. Those behaviours of slots indicate that fixed length slots perform better at certain frequencies than others, while half-wave slot presents an idealized situation. Two validations of the present formulation which are reported in this paper border on the consistency of the vanishing tangential component of the electric field on conductor as well as the well-known bell-shaped current characteristics of dipoles which are duals of slots.","PeriodicalId":334818,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 3rd International Conference on Electro-Technology for National Development (NIGERCON)","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123579867","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
