Existing network design models, that assume a linear router power spectrum, are mislead by ignoring the impact of cooling consumption. In this paper, we make a case that the overall energy consumed by a router is polynomial to traffic demand and increases rapidly when the router is loaded. An energy-smart network design is thus formulated to mostly spread out traffic evenly among routers across the network. We further propose a heuristic and compare our design with popular traffic concentration model on two published backbone networks: NSFNET and AT&T. The simulation results reveal that our design saves at least 25% of the consumed energy, and the proposed heuristic closely matches the optimal results. Thus, mitigating network bottleneck routers, rather than creating ones, leads to a greener Internet backbone network. Our conclusions challenge the common wisdom about existing energy saving protocols.","PeriodicalId":334187,"journal":{"name":"High Capacity Optical Networks and Emerging/Enabling Technologies","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122843491","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Streaming video applications should not only have a good end-to-end transport performance but also have a Quality of Service (QoS) provisioning in network infrastructure. Bandwidth estimation schemes have been used to improve the QoS of multimedia services and video streaming applications. To ensure the video streaming service quality, some other components such as adaptive rate allocation and control should be taken into consideration. This paper gives a review of bandwidth estimation tools for wired and wireless networks and then introduces a new bandwidth adaptive architecture for video streaming.","PeriodicalId":334187,"journal":{"name":"High Capacity Optical Networks and Emerging/Enabling Technologies","volume":"99 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114257795","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Several modulation formats together with electronic based digital signal processing (DSP) implementations have been investigated in order to optimally design an access optical network. Besides increasing data rates, this new trend also plays a major role in reducing the cost and increasing the flexibility of NG-PON. In this paper, we survey the main promising modulations and DSP technologies for NG-PON. This includes modulation and optical OFDM schemes enumerate QPSK, MQAM, MSK, and multilevel based OFDM schemes. We discuss the different characteristics of these technologies showing most important contributions and challenges toward high performance cost-effective next generation access networks.","PeriodicalId":334187,"journal":{"name":"High Capacity Optical Networks and Emerging/Enabling Technologies","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129243232","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many VA NET applications, such as traffic data dissemination, utilize broadcast as a primary mode of communication. Thus creating efficient broadcast schemes is important for supporting practical VANETs. Multi-hop broadcast protocols are generally composed of two components: a rebroadcast algorithm and a beaconing scheme. Beaconing allows nodes to discover topology and exchange neighborhood information with nearby nodes. Rebroadcast algorithms often depend on this information to make retransmit decisions that determine the performance of the protocol. Thus the beaconing scheme plays a key role in the performance of the overall broadcast system. In this paper, we evaluate different types of broadcast protocols to determine beaconing rates required to support them. We test a statistical protocol, DAD, a self-pruning topological protocol, SBA, and a dominant-pruning topological protocol, MPR. Simulation results from JiST/SWANS are shown using simulated traffic mobility models for a range of overhead messaging rates. Results show that overhead-messaging requirements can vary widely between broadcast algorithms in VANET, thus highlighting the need to design efficient broadcast methods that are insensitive to rapidly changing topologies for VANET applications.","PeriodicalId":334187,"journal":{"name":"High Capacity Optical Networks and Emerging/Enabling Technologies","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133782221","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A dual-beam FIB/SEM is employed for the fabrication of the metal nano-gratings and slits of the B-MSMPD. A common mode rejection ratio (CMRR) value less than 25 dB at 830nm wavelength, dependent on the applied bias, is measured. This adequate CMRR value indicates that the BMSM-PD structure substantially suppresses laser intensity noise, making it suitable for ultra-high-speed optical telecommunication systems. In addition, this work paves the way for the monolithic integration of B-MSM-PDs into large scale semiconductor circuits.","PeriodicalId":334187,"journal":{"name":"High Capacity Optical Networks and Emerging/Enabling Technologies","volume":"4 2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125692201","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Interrogation of soft tissue behind hard tissue (e.g. bone) becomes feasible. The optical interaction for a femto second laser pulse is investigated with a hydroxyapatite fixture in representation of bone. Photo-acoustic spectroscopy is preferably applied for the identification and determination of location of optical anomalies in an otherwise homogeneous medium. Application of opto acoustic imaging presents an advantageous mechanism-of-action for imaging through, for instance bone, specifically applied to brain tumors. Furthermore, increase in irradiance levels allows us to use femto second laser radiation for therapy.","PeriodicalId":334187,"journal":{"name":"High Capacity Optical Networks and Emerging/Enabling Technologies","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114655858","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to the collapse of buildings, power systems, and antennas, the collapse of communication infrastructure is the usual effect of disasters. In this study, we propose an emergency communications system established by unmanned aerial vehicles (UA Vs). The system is a post-disaster solution; hence, it can be used anywhere required. In this study, first we briefly explain the details of the system in three aspects: end-to-end communication, localization and navigation, and coordination Then, we evaluate the efficiency of the localization and navigation subsystem. Our simulation studies with Air Robot quadrotor helicopters in Unified System for Automation and Robot Simulation (USARSim) simulation environment show that UAV-aided communications system can be used in case of disasters to establish an emergency communications infrastructure in terms of localization and navigation.","PeriodicalId":334187,"journal":{"name":"High Capacity Optical Networks and Emerging/Enabling Technologies","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113943891","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
