A Wind Turbine Emulator (WTE) is a tool that emulates an actual wind turbine and enables the study of different control topologies for electric power generators. This paper presents the development of a sub kW WTE and demonstrates its performance under a highly fluctuating wind profile. The laboratory prototype consists of a permanent magnet dc (PMDC) motor, controlled by a DC-DC converter, coupled with an induction generator that converts the dc motor generated torque to electrical power. System performance and results are discussed.","PeriodicalId":333489,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Conference on Electro Information Technology (EIT)","volume":"171 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114627137","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents a prototype of a reconfigurable, high performance, low cost and real-time Ultrasonic Signal Acquisition and Processing (USAP) platform based on Zynq System-on-Chip (SoC). The USAP platform consists of five major components: Multi-level voltage power supply; High voltage pulse generation; Ultrasonic signal acquisition; Sampling control unit and Digital signal processing module. The system uses Xilinx Zynq SoC as main processor and controller. It combines both ARM processor and field-programmable gate array (FPGA) on the same chip, which makes the system capable of doing complex system configuration and performing high speed data processing. With this arrangement, the developed system is highly reconfigurable, where software and hardware configuration can be changed on both ARM and FPGA. This paper presents a system design flow of a complete ultrasonic testing system which is capable of acquiring ultrasonic data and performing advanced signal processing algorithms in real-time.","PeriodicalId":333489,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Conference on Electro Information Technology (EIT)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125719828","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To prevent a negative effect to the grid, the behavior of electric vehicles must be accurately modeled and their charging schedules must be coordinated. Therefore, it is necessary to determine where and how much charge is available in electric vehicles in the distribution system. In this paper, a state transition algorithm is designed to determine a stochastic model of electric vehicles to simulate electric vehicle movement in an integrated traffic and power network. Dijkstra's algorithm is used to determine the shortest distance between end-user residential and office areas. A naïve charging technique is used to charge electric vehicles at different time intervals at different charging stations based on their driving patterns. The probability of finding electric vehicles at different charging stations and available charge using information on driving behavior is determined.","PeriodicalId":333489,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Conference on Electro Information Technology (EIT)","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131537080","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To address this challenge, this paper presents an efficient sensor fusion methodology to detect the size and location of obstacles and navigate the mobile robot with high accuracy. This is done by leveraging upon the unique advantages of accuracy in both ultrasonic sensor and a Kinect sensor for near-field and far-fields respectively. Further, an efficient Kalman filter is implemented to reduce the systematic errors in encoder data to track robot pose of the robot in real-time and reach the destination with high accuracy. Implemented on differential drive-based mobile robot, the proposed system has been validated with a high efficiency of detecting obstacles and reaching the destination with an accuracy of 5cm.","PeriodicalId":333489,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Conference on Electro Information Technology (EIT)","volume":"81 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134044651","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, it is difficult to analyze the efficiency of these systems because of the random usage patterns of household appliances. This paper proposes a stochastic technique to estimate the household load profiles using Poisson process and Queue theory for a small community-based microgrid. Using the estimated load profiles, the efficiency of the system for each household and the community are evaluated for two different microgrid topologies: AC and DC coupled microgrids. Preliminary results show that the Queue theory is able to estimate the individual load profiles, and the diversity in the load patterns has a significant effect on the efficiency of the microgrid system. Moreover, the average efficiencies of the AC coupled and DC coupled system were found to be 88.5 % and 78.5 %, respectively.","PeriodicalId":333489,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Conference on Electro Information Technology (EIT)","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132943251","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Power consumption remains an important issue for device management in Smart Homes as unwanted additional power may be used at unwanted times. As a result, resources used in generation of power are not put to use efficiently. These resources can be utilized in other productive applications. In this paper, we design and implement a Smart Meter (SM) to reduce and monitor the power consumption of household devices. The Smart Meter uses a sensor-based microcontroller and an actuator that work together to analyze the power consumption of each electronic household device. The Smart Meter is implemented by an Automatic Measuring Threshold Value (AMTV) algorithm to set threshold values for each appliance. The performance of the AMTV algorithm is validated using AVR Studio software. The results demonstrate that the Smart Meter significantly reduces power consumption.","PeriodicalId":333489,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Conference on Electro Information Technology (EIT)","volume":"313 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132018809","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recent research suggests that Conflict-free Replicated Data Types (CRDTs) can be used to construct collaborative editing systems where concurrent update operations are commutative. This new approach is shown to avoid the complex issue of conflict resolution for concurrent updates to a shared document. The shared document is often modeled as a linear text buffer where each basic element is assigned a globally unique and totally ordered identifier. The linear text buffer constructed this way would constitute as a CRDT, which would make concurrent update operations issued by different users commutative. State convergence at all users can be achieved automatically as long as the users could receive the same set of operations irrespective of their relative ordering. However, it is not straightforward to guarantee state convergence in the presence of malicious users and external adversaries. In this paper, we carefully analyze the threats towards this type of systems, and propose a lightweight solution to achieve Byzantine fault tolerance with low runtime overhead. We define a set of correctness properties for such systems and prove that the proposed Byzantine fault tolerance mechanisms guarantee these properties.","PeriodicalId":333489,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Conference on Electro Information Technology (EIT)","volume":"42 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128314397","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Acne can present as non-inflammatory lesions, inflammatory lesions, or a mixture of both, affecting mostly the face but also the back and chest. Detecting the different types of acne lesions is important in both diagnosis and management. According to acne face mapping, presence of acne in various parts of the face or body has different indications for disease. In this paper, we present several image segmentation methods to detect acne lesions and machine learning methods used to distinguish different acne lesions from each other. Our results illustrated that among texture analysis, k-means clustering, HSV model segmentation techniques, two level k-means clustering outperformed the others with an accuracy of about 70%. In addition, the accuracy of differentiating acne scarring from active inflammatory lesions is 80% and 66.6% for fuzzy-c-means and support vector machine method, respectively. Finally, the performance accuracy of classifying normal skins from detected acnes is 100% using fuzzy-c-means clustering.","PeriodicalId":333489,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Conference on Electro Information Technology (EIT)","volume":"77 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131054662","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
