On the other side, Tracking quality must also be assured while minimizing energy consumption. The main aim of target tracking algorithms is to depict the trajectory of the target at a sink node using the aggregated data from all sensor nodes. Monitoring an Area of Interest (AoI) while other sensors are in sleep mode has been shown to effectively improve energy efficiency in WSNs. In this paper, we propose a VAriable Radius Sensor Activation (VARSA) algorithm to decrease the sensing energy consumption of tracking applications using WSNs. VARSA uses a dynamic sensing radius adjustment and sends the appropriate sensing radius to the next predicted sensor to wake up with. In addition to sending sensors into sleep mode when they are not in the AoI, we propose to decrease the sensing radius of the sensors in the AoI in real time to further decrease the consumed energy of sensing. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm significantly decreases the sensing energy consumption, while providing better tracking quality over time.","PeriodicalId":332932,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 13th ACM International Symposium on Mobility Management and Wireless Access","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115886510","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The architecture of autonomic systems based on the MAPE-K loop dynamically adapts itself when the context changes. However, decisions within phases of the MAPE-K loop must be taken and therefore fit a suitable architecture. Ongoing researches take decisions upon context changes of the system and are a well studied topic in different fields, however, most of them use predefined decisions which do not cover all the contextual changes or decisions which support only a very specific type of application. In this work we propose an approach dealing with the decisions that must be taken within MAPE-K loop for system adaptation, in the context of autonomic computing. An exceptional architectural configuration of systems relies on consistent decisions taken by the analysis, planning and execution phases of the aforementioned loop. Autonomic systems undergo dynamic environment changes and therefore decisions lead the architectural configuration of the system to success or failure.","PeriodicalId":332932,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 13th ACM International Symposium on Mobility Management and Wireless Access","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127232717","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However we wanted to combine this with dynamic analysis to make sure our findings were correct and observable at runtime. For this, we initially created \"AndroPoser\". AndroPoser is a library we inject into Android processes leveraging a feature of the dynamic linker that allows us to transparently modify the runtime behavior of selected functions using LD_PRELOAD. This dynamic library interposition allowed us to hook functions and modify the data they manipulate and/or their return code. We realized that this could be used not only as a support tool for our analysis, but also to subdue any native code that checks for evidence of root access.","PeriodicalId":332932,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 13th ACM International Symposium on Mobility Management and Wireless Access","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115437569","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By using this knowledge we can more accurately predict the performance that can be expected from real MANET implementations. In this paper we assess how recently discovered characteristics of human mobility affect network connectivity and routing performance. Our main results indicate that human-driven MANETs exhibit higher connectivity levels and longer route duration lifetimes than what was previously predicted with random waypoint simulations. These results encourage the development and implementation of MANET-based services, which so far have been regarded as very difficult or impossible to provide.","PeriodicalId":332932,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 13th ACM International Symposium on Mobility Management and Wireless Access","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114512071","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, to overcome the high path loss inherent at these high frequencies, mm-wave networks must employ highly directional beamforming antennas, which makes link establishment and maintenance much more challenging than in traditional omnidirectional networks. In particular, maintaining connectivity under node mobility necessitates frequent re-steering of the transmit and receive antenna beams to re-establish a directional mm-wave link. A simple exhaustive sequential scanning to search for new feasible antenna sector pairs may introduce excessive delay, potentially disrupting communication and lowering the QoS. In this paper, we propose a smart beam steering algorithm for fast 60 GHz link re-establishment under node mobility, which uses knowledge of previous feasible sector pairs to narrow the sector search space, thereby reducing the associated latency overhead. We evaluate the performance of our algorithm in several representative indoor scenarios, based on detailed simulations of signal propagation in a 60 GHz WLAN in WinProp with realistic building materials. We study the effect of indoor layout, antenna sector beamwidth, node mobility pattern, and device orientation awareness. Our results show that the smart beam steering algorithm achieves a 7-fold reduction of the sector search space on average, which directly translates into lower 60 GHz link re-establishment latency. Our results also show that our fast search algorithm selects the near-optimal antenna sector pair for link re-establishment.","PeriodicalId":332932,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 13th ACM International Symposium on Mobility Management and Wireless Access","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122121864","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Motion smartphone sensors were previously used only as a complementary input whereas now, they are increasingly used as the primary data source for motion recognition. In this work, we use smartphone accelerometers to recognize online four daily human activities: sitting, walking, lying and running. We design two new hybrid protocols combining state of the art methods in a parameterized way. Then, we implement those protocols in the context of Android applications, which we develop. The first composition is more accurate and the second one is more energy efficient in terms of battery usage. Finally, we manage to personalize the model for online training of data sensors, which we create initially, to better adapt to the particular individual. According to our experimental performance evaluation, our hybrid methods achieve very high accuracy (even 99%), while keeping battery dissipation at very satisfactory levels (average battery consumption 874mW).","PeriodicalId":332932,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 13th ACM International Symposium on Mobility Management and Wireless Access","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115723900","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Several works have been sought to develop robust solutions for different biometric modalities, such as, face, fingerprint, palmprint, voice, and iris recognition. In this work, we evaluate three well-know local binary descriptors -- BRIEF, ORB and BRISK -- for iris recognition task. We show that the iris recognition is a computationally heavy task to run locally on mobile devices. Then we propose to perform iris recognition on a cloud infrastructure, which has recently emerged as a new paradigm for hosting and delivering services over the Internet. Moreover, the information processing could be completed much faster. In our experiments, we assessed the effectiveness, time-consuming, and memory usage metrics. Simulation results show that cloud-based iris recognition using WiFi or LTE communication reduces the average time at least 50% in comparison with time obtained to perform the iris recognition locally.","PeriodicalId":332932,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 13th ACM International Symposium on Mobility Management and Wireless Access","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121891018","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we propose a method for events identification with the use of an SPC (Statistical Process Control) technique, known as EWMA (Exponentially Weighted Moving Average) control chart, which correlates the SWMs (Steering Wheel Movements) with deviations on the road. It has low cost, provides quick detection and, more importantly, can be used in online applications. A total of 43 sets of driving data were collected from various driving simulations performed by subject drivers. Results show that the application of this technique is feasible, allowing the identification of dangerous lane departure events with a 91.42% precision and low false positive rate.","PeriodicalId":332932,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 13th ACM International Symposium on Mobility Management and Wireless Access","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134069801","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The communication relies on a network with an access point (Wi-Fi, cellular, etc.) using ad hoc communication because Wi-Fi Direct would avoid this dependence. Currently, Wi-Fi Direct does not support multi-hop communication or moving devices. This work focuses on expanding the use of Wi-Fi Direct technology, so that information sent from a device can walk on the network (multi-hop). The number of exchanged messages by devices were measured using four classic routing protocols: i) flooding, ii) Ad hoc On-demand Distance Vector (AODV), iii) AODV-Backup Route (AODV-BR), and iv) Location-Aided Routing (LAR) and a new protocol that we proposed, namely Contact and Social Behavior Routing (CSB) that uses Impromptu Mobile Social Network (IMSN) metrics to store routes. We see that even with some challenges one can route mobile devices over Wi-Fi Direct.","PeriodicalId":332932,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 13th ACM International Symposium on Mobility Management and Wireless Access","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133291231","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
