Therefore, electrocatalysts with high activity, selectivity, and stability are highly desired. Herein, by means of first-principles calculations, we investigated the electrocatalytic NRR performance of a series of transition metal atoms (e.g., 3d, 4d, and 5d) embedded in defective hexagonal MBene nanosheets [\u0000 h-\u0000 Zr(Hf)\u0000 2\u0000 B\u0000 2\u0000 O\u0000 2\u0000 ] and identified that\u0000 h-\u0000 Zr(Hf)\u0000 2\u0000 B\u0000 2\u0000 O\u0000 2\u0000 could be an excellent platform for electrocatalytic NRR. On the basis of our proposed screening criteria, 16 candidates are efficiently selected out from 50 systems, among which, Zr\u0000 2\u0000 B\u0000 2\u0000 O\u0000 2\u0000 -Cr stands out with high selectivity to NRR against HER and the ultralow limiting potential (−0.10 V). The value is much lower than that of the well-established stepped Ru(0001) surface (−0.43 V). The origin of the high activity toward NRR is attributed to the synergistic effect of the single atom (SA) and the M atoms in the substrate. More impressively, a composition descriptor is further proposed on the basis of the inherent characteristics of the catalysts [number of valence electrons of SA and electronegativity of the SA and Zr(Hf) atoms], which helps to better predict the catalytic performance. To address these drawbacks, we have developed a unique continuous-mode redox flow desalination approach capitalizing on the characteristics of redox flow batteries. The operation is based on shuttled redox cycles of very dilute Fe\u0000 2+\u0000 /Fe\u0000 3+\u0000 chelate redoxmers with ultralow cell overpotentials. The air instability of Fe\u0000 2+\u0000 chelate is naturally compensated for by its in situ electrochemical generation, making the desalination system capable of operations with electrolytes at any specified state of charge. Under unoptimized conditions, fast desalination rates up to 404.4 mmol·m\u0000 −2\u0000 ·h\u0000 −1\u0000 and specific energy consumptions as low as 7.9 Wh·mol\u0000 NaCl\u0000 −1\u0000 have been successfully achieved. Interestingly, this desalination method has offered an opportunity of sustainable, distributed drinkable water supplies through direct integration with renewable energy sources such as solar power. The cycling stability of Li metal anode largely determines the prospect of practical applications of Li–S batteries. This review systematically summarizes the current advances of Li anode protection in Li–S batteries regarding both fundamental understanding and regulation methodology. First, the main challenges of Li metal anode instability are introduced with emphasis on the influence from lithium polysulfides. Then, a timeline with 4 stages is presented to afford an overview of the developing history of this field. Following that, 3 Li anode protection strategies are discussed in detail in aspects of guiding uniform Li plating/stripping, reducing polysulfide concentration in anolyte, and reducing polysulfide reaction activity with Li metal. Finally, 3 viewpoints are proposed to inspire future research and development of advanced Li metal anode for practical Li–S batteries.

However, the uncontrollable and random deposition of Na tends to expedite the formation of Na dendrites and increases the risk of thermal runaway. The method of preplant sodiophilic sites can induce the lateral deposition of Na instead of sharp dendrite emergence. Here, we introduce the sodiophilic V 2 O 3 particles to form a protective layer on Na surface (Na/V 2 O 3 ). The high Na ion adsorption energy and low nucleation overpotential of Na/V 2 O 3 facilitate the diffusion of Na ions and homogeneous Na deposition, which can work well in cubing dendrite development. Thus, the symmetrical cell (Na/V 2 O 3 ||Na/V 2 O 3 ) can stably operate for 670 h at 0.5 mA·cm −2 /1 mAh·cm −2 with a smaller voltage hysteresis (less than 100 mV). Moreover, full cell constructed by coupling Na/V 2 O 3 anode with Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 cathode displays an outstanding rate performance, maintaining a high capacity of 70 mAh·g −1 at 30 C. On the basis of the design of sodiophilic protection layer, a dendrite-free, outstanding rate performance, and long lifespan sodium metal battery is realized.

However, the relatively low Li-ion conductivity and poor stability of Li 10 SnP 2 S 12 toward high-voltage layered oxide cathodes limit its applications. Here, a Br-substituted strategy has been applied to promote Li-ion conductivity. The optimal composition of Li 9.9 SnP 2 S 11.9 Br 0.1 delivers high conductivity up to 6.0 mS cm −1 . 7 Li static spin-lattice relaxation ( T 1 ) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and density functional theory simulation are combined to unravel the improvement of Li-ion diffusion mechanism for the modified electrolytes. To mitigate the interfacial stability between the Li 9.9 SnP 2 S 11.9 Br 0.1 electrolyte and the bare LiNi 0.7 Co 0.1 Mn 0.2 O 2 cathode, introducing Li 2 ZrO 3 coating layer and Li 3 InCl 6 isolating layer strategies has been employed to fabricate all-solid-state lithium batteries with excellent electrochemical performances. The Li 3 InCl 6 -LiNi 0.7 Co 0.1 Mn 0.2 O 2 /Li 3 InCl 6 /Li 9.9 SnP 2 S 11.9 Br 0.1 /Li-In battery delivers much higher discharge capacities and fast capacity degradations at different charge/discharge C rates, while the Li 2 ZrO 3 @LiNi 0.7 Co 0.1 Mn 0.2 O 2 /Li 9.9 SnP 2 S 11.9 Br 0.1 /Li-In battery shows slightly lower discharge capacities at the same C rates and superior cycling performances. Multiple characterization methods are conducted to reveal the differences of battery performance. The poor electrochemical performance of the latter battery configuration is associated with the interfacial instability between the Li 3 InCl 6 electrolyte and the Li 9.9 SnP 2 S 11.9 Br 0.1 electrolyte.
