As an important information resource, an atmospheric path radiation image derived from remotely sensed data can be used in many research fields. These include the research in the transmission properties of the atmosphere, the atmospheric modification of remote sensing image, the study of both regional and urban atmospheric environment, and the monitoring of the atmospheric environmental qualities. The principle and methodology for generating the heterogeneous atmospheric path radiation image are described in detail. It is based on known surface reflectance. Using remote sensing images from Shanghai City as a demonstration example, we briefly analyzed the properties of the resulting image of atmospheric path radiation.","PeriodicalId":331860,"journal":{"name":"Geographic Information Sciences","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131841265","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To analyze these trends, the project adopts a time series approach and Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping of socio-economic and environmental data from the United States Census across time and space. Existing regional statistics shows that the region has been undergoing some major changes due to growth. The nature of growth in the area is so one dimensional that sustainable growth anchored in ecological economic principles is sacrificed for short-term economic gains. This comes at an era when other counties in the United States are embracing the tenets of sustainable communities as a way of making cities livable for posterity. Not only has the population growth been moving at a geometric progression, but the area's agricultural land base and ecological indicators have experienced a decline over the years.","PeriodicalId":331860,"journal":{"name":"Geographic Information Sciences","volume":"261 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131411863","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Isobaths are modeled with B-spline curves that can maintain the smooth feature of the curves. Smoothing is performed by keeping the curve points always on the deepest side of the original curve so that the result is consistent with the safety constraint. It is done by using a snake model in which the constraints and the smoothness are expressed via external and internal energies defined from the curve derivatives. The advantage of the model is that the deformation is done by minimizing the system energy and, by tuning the parameters during the process, convergence towards a valid solution is ensured. Results from real case studies are presented.","PeriodicalId":331860,"journal":{"name":"Geographic Information Sciences","volume":"115 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117253364","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we discuss the problems that occur when using GIS to resolve these questions. Based on the analysis of the necessary spatial data for GIS, four types of spatial relation data were defined: location, adjacency, nearness, and influence. These types are ordered by increasing data quantity. The organization of all these data comprehensively and apparently is very difficult work, and is the source of data problems, such as “not prepared when needed” and “prepared but never used”. As a method of resolving these problems, the feasibility and features of Map Algebra are discussed.","PeriodicalId":331860,"journal":{"name":"Geographic Information Sciences","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126050062","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Then the concept is applied to analyze the landscape dynamics in Los Angeles County. It proposes that areas with higher economic slope are more dynamic and less stable than others due to the pressure from the surrounding areas. The hypothesis is tested through detailed studies of Los Angeles County using the 2000 census data. Block groups with high economic slope do demonstrate higher population motility, less stable family and social structures, along with the coexistence of higher average income and poverty level. Further studies at different places and scales are needed to further test the hypotheses proposed in this study.","PeriodicalId":331860,"journal":{"name":"Geographic Information Sciences","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129712654","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Two major tasks are involved: calibrating network travel distances by railway and implementing the gravity model in a GIS environment. ArcGIS is chosen as the platform to illustrate the method. The paper's emphasis is on the methodology, i.e., how the method is implemented step by step in GIS. The study can be improved by using more accurate data and conducting more fieldwork.","PeriodicalId":331860,"journal":{"name":"Geographic Information Sciences","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131249886","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many real applications of GIS need more functions in analysis and decision-making than in data management and visualization. While confronted with an application like planning a new metro line in a city, the typical GIS cannot accomplish it by itself, unless some human experts or artificial intelligence (AI) technology are involved. Many applications of GIS are essentially models for analyzing under different themes, and they are examples of problem solving in AI. Therefore many theories and technologies from AI can be embedded in GIS to strengthen its ability of automatic analysis. Since mathematical programming is a kind of powerful tool to provide feasible if not optimal solutions for problems under some constraint conditions. And many applications of GIS happen to be in a category of optimization, as they can usually be approximated accurately with some mathematical models. However, two questions arise, the first one is what objective function and constraints constitute a mathematical programming should be, and the second one is how an improved GIS can acquire those mathematical expressions. So a knowledge-based subsystem should be included in the hybrid system for the sake of integrating a mathematical programming for a GIS application. This problem is multi-dimensional and so some novel knowledge processing methods, namely, knowledge dependence, knowledge transition and knowledge reference, have to be studied. In this paper, a knowledge-based system represented by frame- and reference-based approach will be illustrated. Examples are used to demonstrate in detail the necessary steps to create a mathematical programming, and a real application based on the proposed approach on planning a new metro line will also be presented.","PeriodicalId":331860,"journal":{"name":"Geographic Information Sciences","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125220842","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The five-tier architecture suggested here can support advanced semantic search and query functions for distributed GIServices by combining Grid computing, Semantic Web, and software agent technologies. The design of the web portal user interface with software agents can help end users combine and integrate computing power with geospatial data and services. Geospatial ontologies are incorporated into the framework by using geographic web ontology language (G-OWL). Intelligent software agent (GeoAgent) techniques are used to automate the procedures for searching, retrieving and processing geospatial data. The proposed Internet GIService architecture will provide a blue print for the establishment of Grid-enabled Internet GIServices and will help the GIS community to identify potential technical challenges to implement intelligent Internet GIServices.","PeriodicalId":331860,"journal":{"name":"Geographic Information Sciences","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117062982","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The information is widely disseminated by distributed data sources and web sites. The integration of such information would provide significant value-added services to travelers, and XML-related technologies have proven to be effective to achieve this goal. This paper aims to design and implement an integrated system to make use of widely distributed traveller information by employing the XML and Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) techniques. The prototype system adopts a three-tier architecture and is implemented using integrated Java technologies. The shared XML schema for geo-referenced data provides a foundation for heterogeneous information integration. The XML wrappers, the metadata schema, and the visualization tools were developed to provide information services based on the heterogeneous data sources. Two examples concerning travel information query and route selection, respectively, are presented to illustrate the applicability of the system.","PeriodicalId":331860,"journal":{"name":"Geographic Information Sciences","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132135142","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This system distinguishes itself from others in the following respects. First, it enables near real-time data collection and dissemination. Second, data-query tools are embedded in the system to support effective data analysis and visualization functionalities. In addition to regular queries, aggregation queries have been developed to provide summary views of historical data with various granularities. Third, the visualization and analysis tools can be accessed via the Internet. WWW technologies, such as active web pages and Java programming, provide user-friendly interfaces for browsing, plotting, comparing, and downloading information of interest, without the need of dedicated GIS software. This system can render information to support many other applications, including pollution control and biochemical detection.","PeriodicalId":331860,"journal":{"name":"Geographic Information Sciences","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125686805","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
