This paper presents an instrumentation system for online continuous measurement of particle size distribution based on acoustic emission (AE) method. Impulsive AE signals arising from impacts of particles with a metallic waveguide protruding into the flow carry information about the particle size. The relationship between the particle size and the peak AE voltage has been established through physical modeling of particle impact. A particle sizing algorithm is developed using peak detection techniques. Experimental results obtained with glass beads demonstrate the capability of the system to discriminate particles of different sizes from the recorded AE signals. The system has several appealing features such as online measurement, high sensitivity, simple structure, minimum invasiveness and low cost, which make it well suited for industrial applications.","PeriodicalId":331484,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (I2MTC) Proceedings","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121015101","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the first steps is to sense the occupied or free frequency channels. Two major drawbacks in the current techniques are that they assume (i) the noise as white and (ii) the measured spectrum as time-invariant. In real world, the noise is (i) colored so it disturbs the signal unevenly and (ii) its spectrum changes over time. Hence, tracking the time-varying noise spectrum can become crucial to remove the noise contributions and enhance the estimate of the received signal. In this paper, we study an auto-regressive model to develop an adaptive noise tracking technique using a Kalman filter such that an extension of Boll's noise subtraction technique, designed for audio noise cancellation, becomes feasible when adjusted to cognitive radio scenarios. Simulation results show the performance of this technique.","PeriodicalId":331484,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (I2MTC) Proceedings","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123867881","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we consider the effect of the particle trajectory via the measurement volume on the CRLB by employing the 2D model of the Gaussian envelope of the Doppler Burst Signal (DBS). The simulation results confirmed the theoretical predictions in terms of the relative effect of the particle trajectory, the measurement time, the size of the volume and SNR on the accuracy of the Doppler frequency estimation. The obtained analytical expression for the CRLB could be applied in engineering applications, e.g. requiring the estimation of the uncertainty of cross flow particle velocity with a known mean flow velocity component.","PeriodicalId":331484,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (I2MTC) Proceedings","volume":"332 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122988992","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Typically in WAMS the global absolute time reference for sensors synchronization is obtained by satellite-based timing signals processing. Since these signals are extremely vulnerable to radiofrequency interference, effective countermeasures aimed at increasing the resilience of synchronized WAMS to external and internal interferences need to be designed. To this aim several synchronization approaches are explored in literature. In particular, to avoid the large volume of raw data involved in typical client-server architectures, many researchers are analyzing the possibility offered by decentralized architecture based on consensus policies. In this scenario many consensus-based synchronization methods are proposed in literature but the attention has rarely been paid to the influence factors that characterize real environments and real smart grid applications as: (i) the presence of hardware characterized by finite processing time, and finite resolution of nodes involved in the consensus procedure; (ii) the effect of typical clock instability as drift, jitter and wander; (iii) the effect of latencies and limited bandwidths available on a radio system or when common commercial wireless communication are adopted. All the above-mentioned influence factors can be thought of as causes of uncertainties that could affect the overall performance. This paper proposes a study these influence factors both in simulated and real scenarios. The final aim is to find an uncertainty model to evaluate and forecast the reliability and the quality of the time synchronization procedure.","PeriodicalId":331484,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (I2MTC) Proceedings","volume":"105 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121772452","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They are characterized by a wide range of applications in anticancer therapy as agent delivery. In this work we aim to investigate the automatic detection features of HNTs through advanced quantitative ultrasound imaging employing different concentrations (3-5 mg/mL) at clinical conventional frequency, i.e. 7 MHz. Different tissue mimicking samples of HNT containing agarose gel were imaged through a commercially available echographic system, that was opportunely combined with ultrasound signal analysis research platform for extracting the raw ultrasound radiofrequency (RF) signals. Acquired data were stored and analyzed by means of an in-house developed algorithm based on wavelet decomposition, in order to identify the specific spectrum contribution of the HNTs and generate corresponding image mapping. Sensitivity and specificity of the HNT detection were quantified. Average specificity (94.36%) was very high with reduced dependency on HNT concentration, while sensitivity showed a proportional increase with concentration with an average of 46.78%. However, automatic detection performances are currently under investigation for further improvement taking into account image enhancement and biocompatibility issues.","PeriodicalId":331484,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (I2MTC) Proceedings","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127818693","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cathodic protection can be proposed as a low invasive approach for the in situ preservation of underwater metallic artifacts. By measuring, at different times, the cathodic current and the corrosion potential of the artifact and by taking into account their measurement uncertainties, the Random-Fuzzy variables allow one to provide a risk level indicating a failure in the protection system. The evaluation of the risk level is very important, since the underwater artifact is not handy and the complex underwater environment can significantly affect the stability of the artifact. The monitoring of the risk level allows to highlight in real time possible dangerous situations for the artifact and an appropriate intervention can be promptly implemented.","PeriodicalId":331484,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (I2MTC) Proceedings","volume":"481 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133644345","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The method starts from the widely used approach of minimizing intensities per area unit, which requires the feedback of the objective function output, and then minimizing the total force generated by the neck muscles. The results obtained are correlated with results presented in scientific literature. The feedback in the GA process is an innovation that could be applied to other kind of problems.","PeriodicalId":331484,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (I2MTC) Proceedings","volume":"80 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132118754","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This method is a variant of the traditional autonomous orbit determination based on extended Kalman filter. The stability of filter process is enhanced by adjusting the reference frame, termed as filter coordinate frame (FCF) in this paper, in each filtering cycle. The key of this method is to find a proper FCF, so that the expansion point of state equation and observation equation can be mapped to fit position, which improves the linearization and dicretization process of traditional EKF. In the simulation, this novel method is applied to cruise phase of lunar probe, the result shows its advantage in stability compared with the traditional method based on EKF.","PeriodicalId":331484,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (I2MTC) Proceedings","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134198263","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We focus on the interconnection of PV cells. In general, the position of photovoltaics on the roof of automobiles is crucial and has a strong impact on the photovoltaic (PV) output behaviour, in particular their output power level. We present strategies which allow the adaption of system structures according to changes in environmental conditions. As a result, we increase output performance levels by changing the interconnection of photovoltaics dynamically.","PeriodicalId":331484,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (I2MTC) Proceedings","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133062572","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
