In the decade from 2004 to 2013, 14 incidents of military tension between South (ROK) and North Korea (DPRK) were recorded. The risks were due to nuclear and missile tests, the death of Kim Jong-il, and two brushfire wars. This research investigated the relationship between the political risks and the trends in inbound tourists to South Korea. In particular, incremental historical volatility demand trends are considered in the context of political events using a stochastic method. The results indicate a significant causal relationship between the types of political risk and the different patterns of volatility seen. Since 2003, the brushfire wars included the artillery attack on Yeonpyeong Island and the sinking of the South Korean Navy’s Corvette Warship. These events had the biggest political impact on the volatility of the inbound tourist market, and all risks had a direct effect on the volatile patterns, whereas the iteration of the risk has an indirect effect as a covariant. The interaction between different types of risk and the iteration was not significant in the fixed model, however if the model was weighted the iteration variable according to the Weighted LSR model improved the explained variance by up to 39.2%.","PeriodicalId":330902,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Tourism Sciences","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-04-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114793324","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We developed a fixed effects model that controls for unobserved characteristics (such as managers’ skills, abilities, and talent) which are correlated with the independent variables in the presence of homoscedastic errors. The firm’s fixed effects allow us to take into account unobserved variables that do not mutate over time and by doing so, to address the principal–agent problem in CEO compensation in both the hospitality and non-hospitality industries in the United States over the period 1992–2010. The evidence shows that CEOs in the hospitality industry have been paid less compared to their peers in other industries. This is mainly due to the non-hospitality industries tending to pay higher salaries and to award more bonuses, long-term incentive plans, non-equity incentives as well as restricted stocks. The empirical analysis also reveals that incentives provided to CEOs failed to resolve the principal–agent problem in both hospitality and non-hospitality industries.","PeriodicalId":330902,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Tourism Sciences","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124538701","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Public surveys, the principles of urbanization and environmental balance are presented with generally-recognized and data-supported local trends. Moreover, these are analysed and compared with other large metropolitan areas in Europe. The development of a central business district surrounded by metropolitan areas encourages a population flow both outward and inward from the centre for residential, work-related, shopping and cultural/leisure/sport activities. The tendency is for the more highly educated to move and travel inwards to take advantage of the shopping, cultural and sport facilities, and work opportunities. Consequently, families separate and this generates more travelling for visiting purposes, with the need for upgraded transportation services. The paper concludes with the findings of what is required for successfully engineering a sustainable transformation.","PeriodicalId":330902,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Tourism Sciences","volume":"104 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117199995","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Research on entrepreneurship and environmental characteristics has been relatively limited worldwide. Two hundred and seventy one questionnaires were used in the final analysis, and the PASW Statistics 18.0 and AMOS 18.0 statistical package were employed. The results of this study suggest 1) The environmental properties of entrepreneurship identified here were different from previous studies. In other words, the innovation of entrepreneurship was affected by psychological traits and economic characteristics. 2) Risk taking was affected by economic and social characteristics. 3) The innovativeness of entrepreneurship was significantly related to financial performance. This study can contribute to examining environmental characteristics in relationship to entrepreneurship and management performances that are associated with success to propose suggestions for those preparing to enter the restaurant industry worldwide.","PeriodicalId":330902,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Tourism Sciences","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130188391","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, more than 50% of the coffee outlets are multi-national franchise companies. This situation is probably putting all local coffeehouse operators into a fierce competition. As proposed by Kang et al. (2013), it is essential for local coffeehouses operators to evaluate their competitive strategies against foreign players. Hence, this study was carried out to evaluate the competitive strategies that implemented by the independents and local chain in South Korea. Mixed method approach was used to ensure both café strategies and consumers’ response were able to be measured effectively. Observation and criteria audit technique were used in measuring café strategies while survey technique was used in collecting consumers’ attitude pertaining to existing marketing efforts by café around Seoul. Comparative analysis was used to analyse the results between foreign franchised café and local café. Findings suggested that majority of the local cafés implemented Extensive Product Line Strategy whereby Generic and Interactive Strategies were least implemented. In contrast, the international chain cafés are widely implemented Generic and Interactive Strategies. This study suggested that it is essential for Korean local cafés to vary its own competitive strategies to compete with rivalries.","PeriodicalId":330902,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Tourism Sciences","volume":"96 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122161590","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For example, Korea has designated the MICE industry as a future growth area and has established promotion plans. Also, Korea has been making an effort to solve related industries’ political and institutional problems. As a result, the MICE industry in Korea has grown fast and is now positioned as a knowledge service industry. By selecting the variables ‘pleasure’ and ‘enjoyment’, the sub-factors of fun, as dependent variables, this study attempts to empirically examine participation commitment and re-participation intention for conventions according to exhibition participants’ feelings. The study found that as convention visitors’ joy increases, their continuance commitment and affective commitment increases significantly, and as their pleasure increases, their retentive commitment also increases. In addition, the study identified that as continuance commitment and affective commitment become stronger, positive effects on re-participation intention grow.","PeriodicalId":330902,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Tourism Sciences","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129539398","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Yet, EI is a relatively new concept among hospitality researchers. Casino Hotels are growing as part of the hospitality industry in the world. In the Asia-Pacific region, Macau has become the largest gaming destination in the world. It has recently come to be known as ‘Asia’s Las Vegas’. This study investigated the role of emotional intelligence and emotional labor (EL) in the casino hotels in Macao. More specifically, this study aimed was to examine the impact of EI on the relationships among EL acting strategies and their consequential behavioral outcomes. Some results were statistically significant and supported the concept of EI and EL acting strategies. The survey was administered in five star casino hotels in Macao. Frontline employees of hotels participated in the survey, and a total of two hundred electronic questionnaires were used for data analysis.","PeriodicalId":330902,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Tourism Sciences","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122014546","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This small-scale study is an exploratory research of the holiday motivations of lesbians in a context different from those previously studied. Based on qualitative interviews, this study suggests that sexuality is not as important for determining lesbians’ holiday experiences as has been commonly argued. In this study, other aspects, particularly cultural experiences, seem to dominate in their holiday motivations. This study does not discard the importance of sexuality in lesbian holiday motivations; however, it does postulate that other factors are as important as sexuality in shaping the holiday experiences of lesbians, at least in a developing-world context.","PeriodicalId":330902,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Tourism Sciences","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128962357","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Market strategies can be wildly divergent based upon the service and quality perceptions that different consumers generate based upon the cultural lens in which they experience the casino’s offering. This study had two main purposes: 1) to develop and test an integrated tourist behavior model which include a range of interrelationships, including tourist push and pull motivations, perceived core and peripheral service quality, and casino retention, of Chinese and Western tourists in Macau; and 2) to investigate the moderating effect of cultural background on the hypothesized relationships in the structural model. The results identified significant interrelationships—among push and pull motivations, and perceived core and peripheral service quality—that played concurrent positive roles in determining retention. In addition, the moderating effects of cultural background on the hypothesized relationships in the structural model showed that - the effect of the push motivation on the perceived core service quality was stronger in the Western group than Chinese group; The effect of the pull motivation on the perceived peripheral service quality was stronger in the Chinese group than Western group; The effect of the perceived core service quality on the casino retention was stronger in the Chinese group than Western group. Theoretical and managerial implications were discussed.","PeriodicalId":330902,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Tourism Sciences","volume":"175 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122928418","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
