It argues that by the early 1990s he was looking to make a change in his career by exploring mature themes in films such as The Color Purple and Empire of the Sun. Against this backdrop, it questions why he decided to make Jurassic Park, a film that appears to be the kind of straightforward blockbuster he was attempting to move away from. Additionally, the chapter seeks to understand his interest in working within a range of genres and how he merges them together to create truly unique films. It argues that this approach is particularly evident in Jurassic Park, a fact that helps give the film much of its substance and longevity, and which goes some way to explaining why he chose to take the project on.","PeriodicalId":330702,"journal":{"name":"Jurassic Park","volume":"75 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129291175","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Touching on themes explored in the previous chapters, it shows how nature, fantasy and masculinity were addressed in similar media that followed Jurassic Park’s release. First it looks at Steven Spielberg’s own continuation of the franchise: The Lost World: Jurassic Park, noting the sequel’s darkness and continued subversion. It then explores the TV adaptation of Jurassic Park author Michael Crichton’s film Westworld, drawing out several similarities and differences in approach when compared to Jurassic Park. Finally, it focuses on modern monster movies such as Pacific Rim and the ongoing Monsterverse, as well as the continuing Jurassic franchise (Jurassic World and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom). In doing so, it explores how some of Jurassic Park’s key themes have been evolved in the wider cinema landscape since the film’s release.","PeriodicalId":330702,"journal":{"name":"Jurassic Park","volume":"103 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123140995","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It first seeks to understand Steven Spielberg’s childhood, during which he was subjected to bullying, and how his difficulties influenced the early part of his career. In his first few films, Spielberg routinely depicts male-coded characters who fit one of two archetypes: the physically strong bully (the truck in Duel, the shark in Jaws) and the physically weak everyman (David Mann, Martin Brody). In these films, the bully torments the everyman, who must become stronger without becoming a bully himself in order to succeed. The chapter then applies this approach to Jurassic Park and argues that Spielberg subverted it by depicting typical bully characters who are good men (for example, Muldoon) and typical everymen who have a streak of darkness to them (Hammond and Grant). In doing so, the chapter argues, Spielberg asks his audience to question the nature of masculinity and addresses the things men need to do to avoid sliding into the aggression that his heroes in Jurassic Park display.","PeriodicalId":330702,"journal":{"name":"Jurassic Park","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121708303","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It first outlines the importance of the natural world to his childhood and then goes on to explain the role it plays in his career as a whole. Spielberg films often focus on the relationship between the man-made world, which is depicted as bland and stifling, and the natural world, which is beautiful and revitalising. Spielberg’s characters are placed at the heart of this relationship and have to go through a journey that can be harmonious or challenging, but always ends in an emotional transformation. The chapter argues that Jurassic Park alters this approach by using the concept of bioengineering to depict the corrupting influence of man on nature. In depicting this influence, Spielberg takes a more hopeless stance than in previous films and draws a dividing line between man and nature. By the film’s end, nature is no longer defined by its relationship with man and man can no longer experience personal epiphanies through nature.","PeriodicalId":330702,"journal":{"name":"Jurassic Park","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115121626","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

First, it explores Steven Spielberg’s relationship with his audience. It explains that prior to Jurassic Park he had often spoken of his determination to please audiences and build films that drew them into the film world. It offers up examples and autobiographical detail to examine this claim and then details some of the key cinematic techniques he used to achieve it, the most notable of which is The Spielberg Face. As his career progressed, however, Spielberg grew frustrated by these techniques and by the time he was working on Jurassic Park, he was eager to alter his approach. The chapter concludes by investigating how the theme park location of Jurassic Park offered Spielberg the perfect opportunity to critique these techniques (and by extension both his career and cinema as a whole) and ultimately find a new way to explore his relationship with his audience.","PeriodicalId":330702,"journal":{"name":"Jurassic Park","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133374705","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
