In this paper we investigate the role of CIOs based on governance theory, agency theory and IT-business alignment framework using data collected from various financial databases. We first examine the determinants of CIO compensation structure and level. Then, we use CIO and top management team (TMT) compensation structure as a proxy to IT-business alignment and investigate its effect on firm performance. Our results provide empirical support for the hypothesized IT attention deficit of the board of directors in the literature. Moreover, we found that the CIO-TMT compensation alignment is indeed related to firm performance, and that its effect is moderated by the competitiveness of the market, the capital expenditure, and the market share of the firm.","PeriodicalId":328874,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 41st Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS 2008)","volume":"289 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-01-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123457805","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, profiting from them can be quite challenging. It is not only a question of pricing and marketing the services appropriately, but also about keeping competitors from imitating them. In this study protecting service innovations against imitation are discussed in relation to the case of Finnish mobile TV. The aim is to examine how service innovation differs from other types of innovation in terms of protection, and how this shows in collaborative innovation activities. Our results indicate that characteristics that separate service innovations from product or process innovations may notably influence efficacy of protection. Furthermore, as creation of service innovations often includes collaborative activities, there is yet another twist to protection issues: On the one hand, companies should protect their knowledge in order to secure their positions. On the other hand, they need to foster knowledge sharing, which may be in conflict with protective measures.","PeriodicalId":328874,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 41st Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS 2008)","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-01-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124530029","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper investigates discourse in virtual teams comprised of international civil servants who interact online to negotiate terms on an agreement concerning terrorism. As these discussions took place shortly after Sept. 11, 2001, they represent negotiations between officials representing countries with roles to play in addressing this global problem. Following an exploratory analysis of these online interactions, this paper provides insight into the language games that relate to the roles played in negotiating actions against terrorism. The contribution of this paper lies in the identification of the language games that take place in virtual teams and how these enable aspects of development to be addressed.","PeriodicalId":328874,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 41st Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS 2008)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-01-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127783427","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

From the social identity perspective, we investigated the impact of GVT members' cultural individualism/collectivism (I/C) and language identities on their participation in team collaboration. Afield experiment involving 33 GVTs was conducted to test our hypotheses. The results indicated that when a team's identity faultlines are strong, its members' I/C and Language identities have significant impact on their levels and forms of participation; and that communication media have significant interaction effects on these relationships.","PeriodicalId":328874,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 41st Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS 2008)","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-01-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115945526","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Moreover, supply chain partnership between suppliers and buyers in SCM have had a significant impact on supply chain performance. In this study, we develop a quantitative model based on the supply chain partnership under several assumptions. For this purpose, we first prove several basic theorems which verify the relationship between supplier and buyer's total profit for two cases, with and without supply chain partnership. We then prove that there exists the supplier's selling price per unit which makes the maximum total profits for both supplier and buyer with supply chain partnership greater than those for any given supplier's selling price per unit without supply chain partnership.","PeriodicalId":328874,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 41st Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS 2008)","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-01-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131991908","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Utilizing a consumer-centric approach, the healthcare consumer maintains a pool of pseudonymous identifiers for use in different healthcare services. Without revealing the identity of consumers, health record data from different medical databases distributed in various clinic/hospitals can be collected and linked together on demand. While pseudo-anonymity preserves user privacy, the architectural design allows the anonymity to be revoked by a trusted authority under well-defined policies with legal-compliance. This framework inherits the advantages in centralized management for distributed medical databases Security of the interactions among different entities in the architecture is guaranteed by certification and cryptographic technologies.","PeriodicalId":328874,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 41st Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS 2008)","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-01-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133059713","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Results of a laboratory experiment on GSS-based virtual teams indicate that teams exhibited higher motivation and trust under time pressure, and both motivation and trust, in turn, have a positive relationship with information sharing and solution quality in ridge regressions. However, reward control has no significant impact on any psychological factors in both ordinary least squares regression and ridge regression.","PeriodicalId":328874,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 41st Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS 2008)","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-01-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133277432","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In recent years some educators, particularly in the health sciences, have introduced mobile devices to support students' fieldwork learning. In many ways there is a natural link between fieldwork and mobile technology. In this paper we report on a trial to introduce mobile support into the study of information systems in the field. The experience showed that mobile devices can assist students collect data in richer, multimedia formats and make subsequent classroom presentations of their field study much more interesting. However, it also revealed certain usage and deployment issues with the mobile devices themselves which have implications for device selection and educational design.","PeriodicalId":328874,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 41st Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS 2008)","volume":"437 1-2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-01-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132186935","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Social network analysis (SNA) has previously been used to evaluate collaboration between projects at a European level. In this study SNA was used to evaluate the nature of the relationship between researchers at network startup, roles subsequently allocated to them, and network configuration. A correlation was found between centrality at startup and subsequent role allocation. Indegree/outdegree analysis provided some indication of this but greater insight was found from examining network partitions and n-cliques.","PeriodicalId":328874,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 41st Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS 2008)","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-01-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128885031","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, XML and its schema languages do not express semantics but rather the document structure, such as the nesting information. Therefore, in the integration of XML, we should emphasize the semantics more than the document structures. In this paper, we provide a context aware framework, named BLCAA, which aims to enhance the XML semantic integration. In BLCAA, we generate both DAML+OLL context ontology and context instances. Through this bidirectional approach, we hope to achieve better context-aware computing in the XML semantic integration.","PeriodicalId":328874,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 41st Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS 2008)","volume":"82 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-01-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131882665","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
