We identify several occasions where innovation failed and the manufacturing firm could not establish a new network of partnerships with their customers enabled by the introduced IT capabilities. Our study highlights a change in the forms of materiality within used control system technology - a shift from controlling isolated manufacturing devices into controlling networks of \"smart\" devices connected by Internet computing. While the new networked and ubiquitous computing infrastructure holds a potential for radical service innovation, this potential has not been fulfilled. One of the factors accounting for the failure is that the global IT innovation strategy was not well aligned to the local context and existing networks of actors. To explain this unfolding of events we coin the term \"decelerated innovation\".","PeriodicalId":328811,"journal":{"name":"2010 43rd Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-01-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130474289","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to factors such as globalization and mergers, an increasing number of IT projects are conducted in partially distributed teams (PDTs). However, students lack experience in how to work effectively in such situations. This field study involved more than 500 students from seven U.S. and seven international universities, working together in PDTs. Through the lens of the Fit-Appropriation Model, quantitative and qualitative analyses were conducted regarding three emergent communication structures (hub-and-spoke, moderate network, and high-network) Findings indicate significant differences in terms of communication technology usage and self-reported learning outcomes. The communication structures differed along two appropriation dimensions -- inclusivity and adaptiveness -- which mediated learning outcomes.","PeriodicalId":328811,"journal":{"name":"2010 43rd Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-01-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127842864","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There is a number techniques for making decisions in today's knowledge-based economies. Decision support systems (DSS) have been developed to aid the decision-making process to find solutions for multiple problems. One aspect that hinders successful decision making is the issue of variability definition. The aim of this paper is to define variability by proposing an intelligent method. Knowledge representation is based in two layer:1) the upper layer i.e. graphical representation and 2) the lower layer i.e. a mathematical algorithm. We present a method that defines and provides auto-support for five operations in knowledge validation particularly dependency constraint rules, propagation, delete-cascade, logical inconsistency and dead choice detection.","PeriodicalId":328811,"journal":{"name":"2010 43rd Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-01-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127954644","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A new way of organizing and opinion exchanging derives from increased social interactions and networking among community members. These members join together in self-organizing groups where opinions are forming by social swarming. Explaining and predicting the evolutionary process of opinion formation by social swarming is not only a powerful instrument for opinion research but also a great challenge. A new approach is presented which enables the recognition of opinions of swarm members and the analysis of opinion formation in the overall swarm by combining methods from text mining and swarm intelligence. The concept is illustrated by an example.","PeriodicalId":328811,"journal":{"name":"2010 43rd Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-01-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131688472","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These techniques can be executed using a Group Support System (GSS), thus allowing the ideation process to be distributed across geographical distances. However, experience is necessary for the selection of an appropriate creativity technique, its implementation in a GSS, and the facilitation during the ideation process itself. To tackle these problems, 101 creativity techniques were analysed with respect to their underlying cognitive processes. The results show that there are only three cognitive principles that stimulate the ideation process by providing a change of perspective. Change of perspective can be used to formalize the cognitive process of creativity techniques. The paper shows how this change of perspective can be used to implement an ideation process with a GSS via Generate thinkLets and discuss how this formalisation can improve the applicability of GSS for ideation processes.","PeriodicalId":328811,"journal":{"name":"2010 43rd Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-01-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129289196","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This case study reports on early experiences with deploying innovative new business applications using open source software at the City and County of San Francisco. While open source adoption research has focused on infrastructure and cost reduction, will the larger organizational impact of open source come from rapid innovation that cuts through resource constraints and complex IT management politics? Early evidence from this case study suggests that systems based on open source platforms are perceived as being developed and deployed in record time, at little cost, while increasing the skills and importance of locally-employed IT talent. By examining the early stages of three projects that have pleasantly surprised users, management, and technical staff, we will suggest how open source enterprise deployments might become a significant force in organizational IT.","PeriodicalId":328811,"journal":{"name":"2010 43rd Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-01-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128840594","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Realization of these features necessitates novel concepts to support such changes in the power system while granting security and reliability of supply. Such evolution poses new challenges to ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) to bridge the gap between increased complexity of deregulated market and on the other side expected rapid growth of number of players in power systems. Increasing presence of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) implementations constitutes a further source of complexity.Bearing in mind ongoing and possible scenarios we aim to determinate the place and role of the novel Virtual Power Plants (VPP) concept, related to the Smart Grid structure. At the same time we introduce an innovative modeling approach as an instrument to determine actors and highlight their actual roles and interactions from different point of view, trying to pave the way for development of a common understanding platform for variety of stakeholders. The effectiveness of the proposed modeling concept is shown through a number of UML models representing system level description of VPP at different levels of abstraction.","PeriodicalId":328811,"journal":{"name":"2010 43rd Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-01-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126630313","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Typically, these sellers choose between \"uniform pricing,\" where the firm delivers to any customer at a fixed delivery charge, or \"mill pricing,\" where the firm bills the customer a distance-related shipping charge. This paper studies price competition between an internet seller and local retailers, and the internet seller's choice of pricing policy. It is found that for low customer willingness to pay, mill pricing is favored but as willingness to pay rises, uniform pricing becomes more attractive. These results are generalized showing that larger markets, higher transportation rates, higher unit production cost, and greater competition between retailers all increase profit under mill pricing relative to uniform pricing (and vice versa). Cost asymmetries that favor the internet seller will tend to induce uniform rather than mill pricing. Some empirical data on retail and web retail sales that are consistent with these results are presented.","PeriodicalId":328811,"journal":{"name":"2010 43rd Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-01-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126635295","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Participants were observed while searching and browsing the internet for campaign information in a mock-voting situation in three online note-taking conditions: No Notes, Private Notes, and Shared Notes. Interaction analysis of the study data consisted of applying Information Foraging Theory to understand participants' searching, and browsing behaviors. Empirical results show skewed time allocation to activities, a tradeoff between enrichment vs. exploitation of search results and issues with lack of scent, low value perception, and value depletion of information. Implications for the voter centered design of e-voting portals are discussed.","PeriodicalId":328811,"journal":{"name":"2010 43rd Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-01-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126692891","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
